A new ZT 454 Thread for people who enjoy it

Safe queens be damned, mine already has its first beauty mark on it :D I was using it to remove the foil from a bottle of champagne and a fair amount of the etching on the tip came off when it contacted the glass. Oh well, it was always going to be a user for me anyway!

I think today I am going to muster the courage to shave a tiny bit of the contact point of the pocket clip off. Something needs to be done because the clip has zero flex and I want to keep carrying this thing!

That is a great shot of your 0454!

It is most interesting, to me, from the standpoint of its artistic value. To braze-weld three separate pieces together in that pattern is rather neat. From previous knowledge of my Kershaws JYD v.2.2 or whatever, the process seems similar. Assuming (hoping) that the bottom D2 has been heat-treated pretty hard, and the top piece left rather soft, it should be a good knife. Bob Dozier certainly did well with his D2.
There has been some limited discussion, previously, about the limitations of heat-treating when making up a composite blade... I'd like to know more about the specs of this knife.
All of that being said, if I had one, I'd just look at it anyway...as it's too nice to beat up.

I'll offer a comparison with the 0562 in a few days. I have one coming in the mail and I'm really excited about it. This was the first KVT knife I've ever handled and I'm confident that as long as the detent is well done on the 0562 it'll fire out just as well.

I have both and the 0562 is smoother, closing on its own weight from the open position. The 0454 fires out harder and seemingly accelerates at a faster speed. There could be many factors to this such as manufacturing variances. My best guess is that it is due to blade shape with respect to mass properties and weight distribution, primarily with respect to the x-axis. I plan on building a couple of 3d model simulations to test this theory next week and will post results.

ZT either way, ZT is killing it and I think both are fantastic and best value out there. My 0562cf cost me $240 and 0454 $510. Both rival $1000+ customs.

good to hear! I wish I could've gotten my hands on a 0562CF as I'd love to try out M390 steel, but the 0562 was available and at a good price so I jumped on it to try it out. I'm even more excited now that you've offered your insight!

I'm among the crowd that thinks this 0454 is just too nice for me to use right now. Unfortunately, the other thing is that I'm left handed and carry in my LFP, so the lack of pocket clip options will prevent me from ever carrying it anyway.

A 4" blade has always been to much for my likings but not this one. The way this large folder carries is perfect for me. It is very light for its size and it feels so much smaller when using it. I have carried this knife exclusively since I got it a few days ago. My 562cf is super sweet but in some respects my 454 feels like a smaller package and I guess the exclusivity of this blade makes it that much more of a pleasure to carry. ZT more than did justice to this Sinkavich design IMO and my serious considerations of buying a Shiragorov to carry are long gone for now. Never been this excited about a knife I own!

I've been carrying mine pretty much continuously since it showed up Thursday morning, and I'm impressed with it. It looks and feels great, and it carries entirely better than the 0777 because it's shaped so much more narrowly. Here's a shot I took about an hour after mine arrived:

. . . and here is a quickie close-up of the braze welded composite blade:

NO!!!
DON'T DO THAT!!!

Keep carrying it and the clip will loosen up, trust me. I've been carrying mine everyday since Tuesday and the clip has broken in just perfectly, I can finally unclip it with one hand.

So, is anybody else actually using their 0454?
Helped trim a tree yesterday, used the 454 to cut some branches. Left some light staining and scratches.

I've been carrying and using mine regularly since I got it too. If it's like my other CB Kershaws, the etching on the D2 portion may get a bit lighter over time. A quick vinegar bath will darken it nicely again though. I've done that on my CB Leek a couple of times now.

Congrats to all those who scored one. It really is an awesome knife :)

I use a more expensive knife, or saw rather, to cut and trim trees, it's called the Stihl ms460r and it get the job done well.

We had a chainsaw...and if you actually read my post, you'd know I didn't cut a tree down with my 454. I cut branches with it, and it did a better job than using a chainsaw for 1/4" branches

Now, back to stabbing this car door with my 454...
:p

I dig your 1911s Pittknife, very nice.

I need some pictures of you using a 5lb mallet to baton the frame of a truck, or prying the bed off said truck. Hurry now, we're all waiting. ;)
