A Part of My Daily Carry Survival Gear

"...the constant WOCKA-WOCKA porn guitar of the Clinton Administration..." ~ Dennis Miller (of all people complaining about the Clintons!)

You don't have to go public with our torrid love affair from years ago...

Shhhh! Not in front of the kids!

Oh all right.

Anyway, I am a Neanderthal, I still use the antiquated Fred Flintstone PDA known as a Moleskine. Next I will need a PDA. I already have the digital record feature on a Motorola wireless and a Phillips MP3 Player. Strangely enough, I don't use that feature on either...

(The "I wish!" was directed at Brian.)

Hey, one of the only really cool things about the movie Shooter is in the beginning, have you watched that movie yet?

I love the recorder idea. Problem is, I can never remember that I need one, when I'm out at Best Buy...

It's a Catch-22 isn't it?;) It really came in handy when I co-wrote/ghost-wrote a book last year. When I visited the historical sites for research, I just spoke the descriptions of what I saw and learned, and did some interviews with it as well.

I dont have a a fancy digi thing but I do usually have a pen and a little pad in my back pocket.

HA! My first thoughts were Dana Carvey (Clean Slate) and Drew Barrymore (50 First Dates). Of course, when you mentioned the USB port, Keanau Reeves (Johnny Mnemonic) came to mind. What a sad commentary that our points of common reference have become Hollywood's tripe!

Being the eternal "Why don't we slice the bread before we sell it?" kind of guy, I have tried recorders. The problem is transcribing the tapes later.

Along this same line, I used to advise people to keep a disposable camera in their glovebox in case they were in an accident. They'd be able to document things right away.

I'm a news photographer and the Nikons I use have an audio feature. You can record 30 seconds of audio per frame. It has replaced alot of note taking through the day about what and who I have photographed. Once, though, I was recording some info and I looked up to see the elderly woman I just shot giving me a real funny look. "Are you really TALKING to your camera?". She walked away confused even after I explained to to her.

LOL, rcinclair, and welcome!

You should have started petting it and cooing, "Nice kitty." She would have run (even if an old lady). :D

Man, I'm like in the stone age compared to you guys!

I carry a notepad and a pencil around with me!

That thing about the Nikons is pretty cool though, never heard of that but I bet it's pretty useful.

I do actually have an old microcassette recorder that I use but mainly for music related stuff, ie "Okay, blues lick in A: pluck pluck pluck" or "song idea...it's raining, but instead of raining rain, it's raining, men, or something. Hallelujah...something like that."

+ 1

I call it the writers discipline; to always have a notebook and pen on my person.

Late at night I've often had an idea, so cool, so profound and so wonderfull that I say to myself 'I can't possibly forget that', only to not be able to recall it the next morning.

My cell phone has a voice recording option that I use from time to time.

I tried a mini recorder for a while (tape version) but reverted to notebook and pen.

Brian,
I have a small recorder that I always carry in my shirt pocket. I have carried it all through my Military career. Always works and it has never needed new batteries. It is called a notebook and pen.

I hear ya, Marty. I always carry the notebook and pen, too, as backup! But, I learned - for me - that I "talk out" my ideas better, then write them after. I don't always write fast enough to keep up with my brain and my motormouth! For short ideas, writing is fine. But more complex stuff works better recorded for me. :D
