A Phone Isn't A Map

I can't see blaming it on the phone when it's user error. There are more folks killed on on highways and byways since we moved away from horse and buggy; I guess we could put the blame squarely on the automobile, but I don't see a big comeback for buggies

technology isn't going anywhere, use it to its full potential and understand its limitations

The modern smartphone is probably the single most powerful and versatile tool you can carry with you. Nothing wrong with those that eschew them, but my cell phone solves more problems for me day in and day out than any other piece of equipment could possibly hope to.

Wow, the cult of Steve Jobs is strong.

Everyday dependence on tech, is only going to lead to more and more of these types of situations. Even something that used to be considered simple, like changing a tire on the side of the road, has become farmed out to calling AAA, or a tow service to do it for you.

These phones and other mobile devices which are supposed to be the "only" thing you ever need, are leading to basic skills of 10 or 20 years ago being forgotten or never learned. Look at spelling as an easy to find example of this.

How can it be user error if the phone stops working, gives poor imagery, or even gives a false location? I suppose you blame Dave for getting locked out of the pod-bay doors.

Yes, Katrina gave us a perfect peak into the future of how modern humans act when their technology fails and the fiction of living in a computer game comes crashing down. Life isn't point-and-click. Never was.

When the gadgets succumb to fragility all the people who gave away their skills to them will be like deer in the deadlights without a single clue. The total loss of the human ability to communicate because of these machines is the best example. If you can no longer even think or form a proper sentence what chance is their to survive without these machines?

Science fiction stories like "The Machine Stops" were supposed to be ideas about how to live and warnings about what was happening to us all, but people just took at as more entertainment. It's ironic, as these technologies are much like fire, but no one knows how to make them, sustain them, or even have much of a clue as to how the work.

I just had this conversation with my oldest daughter. The phone with GPS is a great tool, but better be able to read a map. We're working on that together now.

Never go full amish.

So using technology is bad ? How did you type this up here you type it on a typewriter and mail it in? No you used technology as I'm sure you use email, atms, google, lower end technology am fm radios, walkie talkies etc etc. Your statement is invalid technology isn't going anywhere and it's getting better everyday. Are their things lost due to it ,yes? But it's how it goes we don't kill buffalo to make shoes anymore why? Because technology has made easier ways to make shoes. We don't pick crops anymore why because technology has made it simpler again etc etc. Do I think everyone should know how to use a map sure but for the most part technology has made them obsolete time change batteries are lasting longer and longer it is what it is .

Foolish argument. This would imply that since you're human you can never criticise other humans, since you live under a governmental system you can never criticise nor even try to understand that system, since you live in the world then everything in the world must be good.

You're all making me out to be the bad guy for having ideas which mean something and arguing for something that is clearly right, all while presenting no arguments and just forcing the assumption that technology is beneficial. That ideas are so righteously attacked by those who have none says a lot about the world and the technology you defend so religiously.

Several have said that phones are essential, and one has even said that the phone is the best tool there is. And in a thread meant to discuss how the technology is putting other people who try to enjoy the wilderness in danger, including those tasked with looking out for the forests and people who get lost. And I'm wrong? Truly absurd. But I suppose when you think like bots you will attack other people in defense of them.

Um ... speaking of no arguments ... all we've seen so far is a tabloid story claiming smartphones are causing more people to be in need of rescue, with links to stories about Russians shooting down a UFO over Iran, staggering pictures of extraterrestial organism, father who pinned his family to train tracks, etc. Some of us might want to see evidence more convincing than a tabloid story before we even begin to argue.

Um this^^^^
Also to say that mankind doesn't benefit from technology is crazy man. I agree that it is a good idea to know how to read a map. But come on man you can't really say this stuff with a straight face can you?

Alone.... OMG, my cell phone battery died. I'm out of here. :D

Without electricity, most of the modern technology FAILS. I just hope I never see the day there is a natural or unnatural EMP event that is continent or earth wide.

22 I agree with your said point. I also agreed to the op with everyone that goes into the woods for extended times should have a paper map and compass. But to say a phone can't or should be used is crazy. To say technology isn't beneficial or imply it is aatter of opinion.

Completely irrelevant, as those are separate stories not in the headlines the day it was posted, and those articles have zero bearing on the story. The newspaper/website is actually tied to the British government and other major newspapers, so it is on them not me if they choose to discuss conspiracy theories. Meaning your efforts to make me look bad through posting a link are just part of the general laziness of people today when it comes to technological communication, and the orwellian response of people immediately assuming information is good or bad without looking into it themselves. Ironic considering the discussion so far.

And this shows your ineptness in regards to technology. Simply search the rescue team in the story, click 'news' and you will find many 'reputable' news agencies discussing the same thing. Here's one:
