A Question About Your Collection

I dig that collection, EyeDog. Solid theme, yet all of the pieces are different and have their own identity.

Is that a brass bolster on that Barlow?

Got it last month here in the exchange:

Esnyx Mammoth Beerlow. Made from a #15 Crown Lifter, long pull clip blade with cap lifter. The only parts from the original knife are the blades. The liners and pins are stainless. Scaled in excellent mammoth ivory. Bolsters are brushed bronze.

Loving the discussion and thanks for the pics everyone!

Another rainy day here in Vermont and the lighting is terrible. I really wanted to add some pictures though, so I had to resort to my flash.

Nice collection from Vermont! Missing my daughter wish I was there...even in the rain.

Nice to see the Opinel ... Every collector needs at least one in their round up.

Most of my collection revolves around gadgetry. It consists of OTFs and bearing equipped flipper folders. As much as I love balisongs I own none. But I would if any company made a good one at the price Im willing to pay. I have a couple fixed blades but I dont buy or collect them. The ONLY reason i have them is because I was gifted them. So yeah my collection follows the big kid toys theme.

I am relatively new to the knife world and have made some mistakes in collecting so far. First thing I did was to buy a lot of inexpensive knives in brands that others seemed to like here on BF. It has taken me a while ( and a lot of money ) to understand what exactly I am doing. First I had to figure out what was a comfortable price range that gave me quality knives instead of just buying knives to have a large amount of them. For me that was $50 to $200. So the next thing was which ones to buy. It turns out that there are many things to consider. First what will I use the knife for. Then fixed blade or folders since I am retired and disabled due to an accident I don't have a need for fixed blade any more so folders it is. I also decided that I like flippers best. Next would be the blades what kind of steel, plain edge, serrated or combos and length. then what type of point do I like, for me its a drop point however if I really like a particular knife I would except a different type of point. Then comes the handle material. So many types are out there it's mind blowing. I like the feel of G10 but again I'm open to others except I don't like one side of one kind and the other something else. (sorry ZT). Also how much does it weigh will it be comfortable in your pocket. Then for me its appearance, do I like what it looks like color, shape and so on. And last don't worry about what others think or like because after all the knife is for you. Now that I have a handle on this much, going forward I will be collecting flipper knives from $50 to $200 with 3 to 4 inch plain blades with a good stainless steel (s30v, cpm154 and so on). drop point with G10 scales (or perhaps something else ) that I like the looks of. This may be a redundant and even a stupid post but it's where I have gotten to in deciding what my collection is about.

Did not see Spyderco's listed. Seems like something you should try if you've not done so. The PM2 is great since there are 5-6 ways to deploy the blade.

This is a PM2 with dessert tan scales, lanyard and right hand cross draw sheath.

I got a PM2 and a BM Griptillian about 3 weeks ago and I like them both very much. And I will no doubt buy more of these type knifes in the future but for now I want to build a nice collection of flippers. I also have a Tenacious and 2 Byrd knives a Meadowlark and a Cara Cara 2.

Brass Bolster... That's a good name for a 1930's pulp hero.

My collection is not as random as it used to be. These days I tend to like titanium liner and frame locks. I also really like Emersons. Emerson is the only brand that I have accumulated on a large scale. 9 so far, would have 11, but I sold a couple. I also really like CRK, but only have 2, a large Sebenza 21, and an Umnumzaan.

As far as other knives go, it's whatever strikes my fancy, but I'm a sucker for titanium. As far as fixed blades, I don't have many, and tend to only buy what I will find useful for camping and such.

I really like the idea of an "accumulation" rather than collection. I do make an effort to use all of my knives, so maybe that's an important distinction. I really do love accumulating them though. Having a knife strike your fancy is really cool! I'll shop for months and be bored by everything that I see, but then you find that one design and...you just have to "accumulate" it ;)

Mine is totally accumulation.

Supposedly I focus on military knives. Still have a lot on my list.

And no, folding knives dont interest me much at all.

Not pictured are an Opinel, a CRK Professional Soldier and a Klinis cretan knife

I also accept not so tacticool military knives and of course presents.

I also like to get a knife or two if I'm in another country, military if possible, but traditional (custom made if possible) is also nice.

I'm not a serious collector. Some people say if you aren't a serious collector then you are an accumulator. I think serious collector means you do have a plan for what you buy and what your collection looks like.

When I got interested in buying a lot of knives I was mainly buying custom hunting knives. I liked the style, being interesting but not crazy, and I liked the craftsmanship, fine handle materials, etc. I bought what looked good to me but there were certain styles that I liked best. I also managed to buy a few tactical knives, not knowing what I would do with them. I was not into bushcrafting knives and didn't buy any of that type.

I think people go in phases, and I think there are general trends that could be even considered to be fads. I think tactical knives, zombie knives, bushcrafting knives could all be considered in one of these categories. These days I'm more into user knives, whether fixed or folding. I try to buy something I'm going to use so that excludes some influences from fads or phases.
