A rising problem?

*sigh* As I stated in another recent thread...

"Any tool is a weapon if you hold it right."

-Ani Difranco

I would say that the popularity of tactical folders and tactical fixed blade knives that have limited utilitarian use that, yes, many consider a knife a weapon.

I carry some pretty beefy folders. If all I needed was something to cut a piece of rope, or open a box or shave a piece of wire etc, all that would be needed is a small pocket knife. I would rather carry my SNG or 301 which could do those things but would be gross overkill.

(Kind of hard to pretend that a pair of Emerson Combat Karambits are "tools" anyway!)

Some knives are designed for the sole purpose of being used as tools though , I'm not referring to the ones designed as weapons such as karambits, khukris, etc.

It is strange that even though I live in South Africa: a Country with high crime rate and murders in the world......we do not have such a big problem with laws on knives. They are more concerned about guns.....they just made it a bit more difficult to own a gum and to get your license.

My grandfather turned 83 and he knows I love knives and he said the other day he realized something....each country was build on the steel edge of a knife...now why can't people understand that through history each expedition and adventure relied on a knife..and if it was not for a knife we might not be where we are today.

Exactly what I been waiting to read Marthinus.

In the US its pretty much common knowledge that the gun opened up the country to settlers and exploration. Knives are good for preparing food or as backup to a gun.

I may be an old man I guess but when the teacher came to class and a couple of us were playing mumbletypeg on the back row he just said to put that up and get out your books. I was in a bar Wednesday night at about 1:00 am talking to this bald headed kid who had just been accepted into the Green Berets and when we got our knifes out to compare and contrast the two bartenders swooped over but they just wanted to see what we had, mainly because they know me and know knife violence isn't what I do in bars.

I'm not old, but even when I was in High School people didn't have the same fear that they have now of knives. There were lots of kids with pocket knives, and as long as they weren't whipping them around, no one thought much of it. Now, a kid opens his locker, and someone sees a knife sitting in there, even if it's just a little tiny swiss army type knife, he gets suspended for a week, forced into counselling and instantly branded a threat to his fellow students. That's what's rediculous in all of this. The media and our Government have everyone jumping at shadows.

Lots of good points and reflections on this thread, but to speak to what the OP was getting at, what can we do about public perception? I may see a knife as a tool or weapon, it doesn't really matter, the point is- what will Joe the Plumber think?

Ideally, I don't want people to think about knives at all. I don't want them to notice knives one iota, or at least as little as possible.
I think knife-ownership is in trouble because the public notice knives way too much lately and in a negative context, thanks to tv, movies, video games, and idiots who like to brandish knives.

Make no mistake- we may be knife enthusiasts, but by-and-large our children won't be...and that's not going to change in a society where most people don't need knives in their daily life. If they need to open a box, they use car keys.

A knife is both a tool and a weapon as is a gun or a bow or a spear or a hatchet. Even the humble hammer has often been used as a weapon just like a baseball bat or golf club. Anyone intent on crime will use whatever is handy. The Police certainly see knives as weapons as do school boards. In early days it was certainly a weapon and in some cultures, it probably still is.

However I see your point and it's not good to give the sheeple more reason to look down on Knife owners.

It is not knives. It is just the fact that alot of people are just no good, these days.
