A sad day...

Sorry to read of your loss. I pray another animal will come under your care though. It is obvious from your post that a pet with you is well loved.

To mirror what others have said, I hope you find another cat to rescue. They make great pets - and friends. You sound like a great pet owner. May you find happiness in another one. I am so sorry for your loss of your longtime friend.

Maybe your vet will 'cut you a deal' on your expenses there. Our's did last summer when our Geoffie had to be put to sleep, after some protracted heart problems (She was on beta blockers for her last 1.5yr!). Of course, we still had five cats, representing quite a future cash cow, no doubt! Seriously, they generally 'absorb' some costs when the outcome is bad, something a human doc won't do, for sure. Sorry to isolate on dollars in your time of loss.

Take care,

Stainz

Sorry to hear about your cat sketchbag.

We had to put one of our Siamese down last June. He had a bout with pancreatitis about 6 years ago. He was fortunate to be able to have that sitaution turned around, but he was then diagnosed as a diabetic. We had to closely monitor his diet, food intake, and blood glucose level every day. It was a lot of work. We couldn't travel or do much of anything during that time. Last June he stopped eating. We took him in and the vet ran tests. After several days at the vet, an ultrasound revealed that his abdomen was being overrun by tumors. There was no way to resolve the issue, and we made the decision to end his suffering. After spending so much time intensely caring for Uno, putting him down was one of the hardest thing I have ever done. I still think of him often, and he visits me occasionally in my dreams.

Take some time to reflect on life with your friend. Remember the good times.

Sorry to hear about that man. Can be tough...

I am counting the days w/ my cat now. Seems reasonably healthy and eats well, she'll be 19 this June and is as def as a post... Heart murmur and some blood issues...

It'll be sad when she is gone...

Smoke sent, may you find peace and strength from within.

I have gone through the same thing with many 'great cats' over my life time. They provide unconditional love and affection. There is something special about cats, they have an intelligence that goes far beyond that of most animals including humans. Minew my 16 year old cat died last year and I still miss her dearly. Jake is now 13 and as an older cat enjoys life.

The costs of a cat or dog are not so much the food and vet bills, but rather the fact that we outlive them, and have to go through the pains of death with each one we have through our lifetime.

Sketchbag, I know you didn't ask for comments, but you have my sympathy in the loss of your cat. Our little cat crew are 100% indoors where they are safe, and we sure do love these little rascals. Besides being sorry for your loss, I'm sorry the vet bill is so high, too. But at least you can know you did everything possible to save your cat. When you can, go to your local "shelter" and give another deserving cat a good home. Get a pair of cats from the same litter if you can. They sure do play well together all their lives.

Take solice your cat had a good life and that you did everything possible to help. I hope in the not to distant future you get another cat as I agree with what others have said in these posts that a cat with you will have a fantastic life and thats all any of us can ever hope or dream for.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone, I appreciate the condolences. I dunno about getting a kitten, I still got 3 more old ass cats. A 17 year old who so far has been very healthy, a 12 year old cat that's used 8 of its 9 lives and has cost a bloody fortune, and a 10 year old "fat bastid". I'd better start saving up!

I think the next pet I'll get will be a scorpion or a fish. Something that doesnt have expensive life saving medical treatment available to it. Granted neither are very cuddly.

Shit, I miss Machray a lot though. That cat was so good, what ever I did she'd just follow me and watch me patiently. Chatting on the forum, she'd always be on my lap or sitting next to the computer just staring at me with the tip of her tongue sticking out.

p.s. what is with the "smoke"?

That's a saying that originated on the Himalayan Imports Forum. I think it' s maybe Native American to send up smoke for someone in trouble you know like a smudge or something.

Sort of the equivalent of sending a prayer for you:thumbup:

I know this is off topic, but what ever. I'm very depressed and have nothing to do.... My cat, which I've had for over 15 years died today. She seemed perfectly fine up until a few days ago, then she stopped eating. Took her to the vet, they did all sorts of tests and eventually an exploratory surgery to discover the problem. Her pancreas had swollen to the point where her stomach/intestines were pinched. The few days of malnutrition had caused problems with her liver. By this time she was too weak to recover... It's not easy loosing something thats been a part of your life for so long. I sure will miss that cat...RIP Machray

No comments are necessary, I'm just venting...

When a cat ceases eating, even for just a few days, it almost always results in pancreatitis which all too frequently results in subsequent death. So, one day of refusing to eat, is reason to get a cat to a veterinarian immediately. Hope this bit of advice may save someone's cat in the future.

FYI, these creatures do not exempt you from developing feelings for them. My wife had a really nice freshwater tank for years before she met me. A year after we met we got married and moved. Some of the fish were traumatized or otherwise injured during the move, and this emotionally wrecked my wife, and me, as well. We tried so hard to be careful and cautious, too.

I'm with you Jeepnut. We, too, have a 19 y/o that is deaf and is beginning to have kidney function issues. Last week at her checkup the doc felt that her liver was enlarged. She will have an ultrasound on Tuesday.

So true. Before last year, I hadn't lost a pet since I was in 5th grade. 28 years later, it wasn't any easier. If anything, it was much more difficult.

Sorry for your loss Sketchbag. I too lost my cat last year, Kublai Kahn, he was a great friend. Used to sleep on his back next to my pillow at night, come when I whistled, nip my ankles when I walked by and he loved to play tag.
When he passed I drove him back to Colorado (Home) to lay him to rest in the mountains where he grew up.
We will miss them all.

Ric

I took my cat to vet, she said we need to put her to sleep. As the tears fell from eyes, I said I didn't bring her here to get killed.............. a young girl working there, thought I was a jerk crying over my cat.

From one cat person to another... I feel your loss, and I know your pain. :(:(:( ...And I'm sorry that she had to go. There's nothing that I can say that will really help, but eventually your pain will be replaced with bittersweet & loving memories of your cat... It took me a really long time to get over my last two. Know that she loved you and that you gave her a really good life filled with love & companionship. My condolences for your loss, & may she rest in Peace.

All our pets, whatever they are, have a huge role in our lives and rightly.
Loyalty, comradeship and love from an animal is a wonderful thing,we are priviliged to get it and return it.
