I don't think anybody here knows enough about your situation, finances, working conditions..etc. to give you any advice worth two dead flies.

Or even three live ones.

but its the uncertainty that scares me...

That's just part of life. Don't kid yourself, Fortune 500 companies are no more secure than any other - maybe even less so. I don't care how much seniority you have, if some bean counter or jealous nimrod decides you've got to go, you're gone baby, gone. The unemployment lines and fast food places are chock-full of people who thought they were set for life in their "careers" and got unceremoniously dumped.

What's the worst that can happen? You fail and lose everything. Big deal, you're still young enough to start over. My Dad warned me for years not to waste 20 or 30 or 40 years at jobs I hated... I wish I'd taken his advice a long, long time ago.

That's enough serious thinking for me... my brain is starting to hurt and I forgot to buy whisky this weekend. :grumpy:

I think he's obviously attracted to you. Flowers will be next. Watch your step here big guy.

There's always that. Who knows, maybe that's just the change you've been looking for. :D

The question, for me, would be how close you are to getting some sort of vested retirement if you already have "untouchable seniority"? If you don't have to suffer much longer to lock in some retirement income for life, it would be worth staying. If you've got 10 or so years to go, then maybe not so much worth the headache.

One of the things that my current situation of employ has to offer me besides being treated and called a dumbass everyday when the engineers cant even do my job is the fact that I lost my retirement years ago. I have a 401K that I figured I could roll over into investments and a cash balance that I could cousin my income for a couple of years if sh!t didn't work out.

Todd,

I don't think anybody here knows enough about your situation, finances, working conditions..etc. to give you any advice worth two dead flies. Way too personal and life changing to ask us idiots. Do the best you can to add up the positives and negatives, discuss it with your wife then flip a coin.

So true you are Trade,........ Hows this for honesty, If I leave tomorrow those bastards will pay me about 25K after taxes for me to tell them to kiss my ass. On top of that, I have a 401K worth several 10th of thousands of $$$$$$ that I can roll over into other investments. I have no retirement there, They took that along with about 50k a year for me in 2010. But keep in mind, My future would be uncertain, basically, I would be making a living by my own two hands.........don't have a problem with that. just gotta know that Im not crazy for thinking such.

My hog hunting buddy uses a .30-30, but I can't remember if it's a Marlin or a Browning BLR.

I've been using an AR in 300 Blackout that I built myself.

Nice "eating" pig...

I generally hunt hogs with a 12 gauge... the swamps being a bit dense for rifles... but if I feel like nailing one with a rifle that short little lever action in fun to shoot them with...

Nothing better than homemade chili and beer bread on a cold night.

Hello Todd,

I don't know you at all but I was in a similar situation 3 years ago. With your current company do they offer a leave of absence? With it being a fortune 500 company I would think they have some sort of good human resources. I would explore the option of potentially taking some time off out of your current position (should you hate it that much) if its an option. Stress that is a family matter and you require some time off of work to get things sorted out. If that doesn't work there is also "stress" leave that you can consider if you are confident that it would not impact your current job. Please keep in mind you will have to work for cash while helping your friend out during your time off so as it does not look like you found other employment. If you can, then use this time to assess your situation in life and make decisions with your family.

For me, I ended up leaving the job I hated and started working with my cousin. Unfortunately the business we were working on didn't take off and he eventually went bankrupt before calling it quits. I found a job locally and have started working my way up from the bottom. All things ended up working good for me as my commute is now 8min (with lights) and in the grand scope of things with the money I am saving on gas and the extra time I can put in at my job from not commuting I am actually making more then I was before.

Keep in mind.. I am a young'n (compared to most of ya'll). I still have 25 years to go until my early retirement.......

So can me and the Colonel come down and shoot some pigs? Serious question!

Right now, I'm depending on my friend for invites to the cattle ranch he hunts on, but am working on a couple other places. There is no season, but they seem to be scarce right now...we've come up dry the last 3 trips. One of mu friends at work used to see them on his game camera all the time in the fall, but they're scarce since the acorns dropped at the beginning of winter. I do have a guy at church that will be looking for hog eradication once he starts planting later in the spring, so I'll give a holler if that works out. He normally puts in corn, which the hogs can tear through pretty quick before the seeds even sprout, but he's thinking about milo this year. I'm thinking we might have more regular success on the cropland as opposed to the cattle ranches, but we'll see.

Trade is right about none of us knowing diddly about your life or situation. My only comment is, without getting political, the insurance opportunities are really screwed up right now, and likely will be for the next couple of years. You have kids, a wife and yourself, all need some insurance protection. Assuming you have insurance, if you leave your day job, can you get as good or better insurance on the income you receive?

That is all I have

Then I think you know what you need to do......

Todd,

My son just went through a similar situation and opted to go on his own. He's got a wife, two kids, house and car payments and likes nice things. He quit a job making close to six figures and that's not an easy thing to do. It takes some sack. I'll give you the same advice I gave him. When you work for somebody else few things are in your control. Your livelihood will always be at the mercy of people you've never met and don't give a shit about you or your family. If you want a chance to make it big work for yourself. Be a professional and every ounce of effort you put into it comes right back to......you. Not somebody else. Of course there are exceptions and your mileage may vary but for the most part, why make somebody else rich with your sweat?

Well keep us in mind we both really want to do it and the pay to hunt fenced in places dont have much appeal

I'll just leave these here.

TM, btw, I don't know what the backlog is like on these knives, but I fell in love with the design as soon as I saw it. I want one of these pretty bad and if time/funds/availability is on my side, I will have one. Just saying... It's a purdy knife. :)

I think I'm losing my mind...... Id like to have your guys opinion...... As most of you know, knife making is part time for me, I have a 40 hr. a week job that I hate, but it still provides, on top of that, I'm making knives and ever since I was inked in a few different magazines its gone through the roof. AND, one of my best friends in life started a business and Ive been working part time for him as a metal fabricator. Now, add em up fellas, that's three jobs I'm workin right now. Heres the sick part, If Im not sleeping, Im working, and working my ass off, the thing of it is, Im happier now than I have been in months, I am in no way trying to brag on myself because if I was on the outside looking in I would call me a idiot. Its not about the money, am I just so shallow that I have to keep myself occupied 100% of the time? 2 of the three jobs I have take advantage and encourage my creativity. Is that what im after? I just turned 40, am I going through a midlife crisis? Or am I just one sick bastard that likes to be worked like a barrowed mule? I don't think the last is true. I don't get it, any of you wise bastards got any input or advice? Im drawing a blank? Do I save it for Church tomorrow?

Todd, I just came out of a VERY similar situation. Seriously very similar... I could bore everyone with the details but will skip to present... What was the end result? Well, to keep things short and simple, My wife and I ended up doing what was best for our family, and our family's future.

I'm an engineer (electrical), so don't judge us all by those jackwagons. I've worked with enough ME's, electronic and engineering techs, draftsmen, and tech writers to know that everyone, whether with a degree or a trade, is critical to success. If they don't get that, then they are doomed to eventual failure.

Yanking a retirement or pension plan out from under you and replacing it with a 401k also does not bode well. 401k's are important because they are portable and I think the typical US worker will have an average of 5 jobs in their working life. I suppose the upside is that you can take it with you.

Finally, you are not crazy for thinking seriously about this. Good luck and God bless!
