just LOTS of knife singles.....That only applies to stoves. I don't have that many knife duplicates. Some quasi-duplicates in Beckers because of Camillus/Ka-Bar distinctions, but overall, not so much.
you're doing fabrication work for a mere $20/hr. Sounds to me like you already did something in return.
It's good to see a couple friends who can work out a deal where both are getting ahead and feel good about it on both sides.
I live in New England and am embarrassed to say that I make little more than that at a job I've worked at for 19 years....even adding in health insurance for my family and some matching to 401k, I'm undervalued. And even though it's a very large, national company, it's ....less than an ideal job. I don't pretend to know your situation, but....We don't all live in high class New England. Remember this isn't really a job I wanted, just trying to help out a friend. not to bad for a part time gig!
I guess what Im trying to get from you knuckleheads that your not seeing here is, I'm torn...... I think I have a opportunity to make a living doing what I know and love best. (metal working) But, who here is going to tell me Im a fool for leaving a fortune 500 company with untouchable seniority for something that's unknown and, that I will have to work my ass off for. I don't care to work hard. but its the uncertainty that scares me, Glen, however totally encourages my knife making and could possibly be a step closer to getting there full time.
This^^^. Plus, it sounds like you already know what you want to do; the question sounds more to me as if you're wondering if you'll be happy doing what you love if it means less money for you and your family. Lots of sage advice here from people who know you better and have more experience in the world than I, but let's say your company paid you twice as much as you make now - would you still hate the job and the idiots you have to work for? I don't think you're crazy at all for considering leaving your job to do something that makes you happy...I know from personal experience that more money will not make a sucky job suck any less. More to the point, what would you sacrifice by losing the job that's grinding you down (besides cash) and what would you gain by embracing a life that involves doing what energizes you and is creative? What I know is, you'll do what's best for you and your family.Todd,
My son just went through a similar situation and opted to go on his own. He's got a wife, two kids, house and car payments and likes nice things. He quit a job making close to six figures and that's not an easy thing to do. It takes some sack. I'll give you the same advice I gave him. When you work for somebody else few things are in your control. Your livelihood will always be at the mercy of people you've never met and don't give a shit about you or your family. If you want a chance to make it big work for yourself. Be a professional and every ounce of effort you put into it comes right back to......you. Not somebody else. Of course there are exceptions and your mileage may vary but for the most part, why make somebody else rich with your sweat?
Joe, this is my thumbs up! Good job with the li'l lady.
Me.Hey Tanker, I got a knife pretty close to done for your old man, who do I need to get a hold of?
Boys....not only does heaven exist, but i've just returned from it:
Bacon and Bourbon tasting--All you can eat, all you can drink: pappy 20, pappy 15, bacon donuts, icecream, fois gras, sliders, 18 other distilleries both local and national....
I have excellent pictures to share tomorrow, but unfortunately it's time for me to do my rip van winkle impersonation

Man, Im digging this Ipod my buddy gave me, been listening to it all night, He nailed the songs. This thing jams! I like all kinds of music, but have a certain type of motivation music that gets me fired up. its hard to believe that somebody other that me knows me this well, expect my "lets make beautiful music" thread to grow! Keep in mind, What Glen gave me is motivation music! I love all sorts, Anybody free to post!
trivia: Mosins have a perfectly good safety. most Mosin users have no idea how to use it. as well, there's some cool tricks to learn. good rifles. they suck to scope, but otherwise...
One of the things that my current situation of employ has to offer me besides being treated and called a dumbass everyday when the engineers cant even do my job is the fact that I lost my retirement years ago. I have a 401K that I figured I could roll over into investments and a cash balance that I could cousin my income for a couple of years if sh!t didn't work out.
So true you are Trade,........ Hows this for honesty, If I leave tomorrow those bastards will pay me about 25K after taxes for me to tell then to kiss my ass. On top of that, I have a 401K worth several 10th of thousands of $$$$$$ that I can roll over into other investments. I have no retirement there, They took that along with about 50k a year for me in 2010. But keep in mind, My future would be uncertain, basically, I would be making a living by my own two hands.........don't have a problem with that. just gotta know that Im not crazy for thinking such.
Even me?
I've fired steel-cased Tula from my DDM4v7, mixed with brass of various varieties, when I was putting it through the wringer. Shot up about 500 rounds, with steel and brass mixed in the mags and everything, mags left in the dirt, etc. No issues of any kind at all. No FTF, no FTE, nothing. Love that gun. Hopefully the one I'm building will perform as well. Then again, the new one is a .223 Wylde instead of a 5.56 chamber. We'll see how that affects things.
I have a Marlin 336 also, which I love. Great gun.
That's how they're listed on the website for sure, but all of the ones I've seen in Walmarts in two different states(Oklahoma and Maryland) have been the laminated stocks.
.308 is pricey to shoot as a plinker imho
an M39 Mosin is fantastic if you can get one.
or you can buy a known good barreled 91/30, or any good carbine (esp with bad wood), add the archangel stock and have a studly thing: bonuses: 10 round magazines, after-market ready bent bolts, ability the mount a "scout scope" by knocking out two pins on the original sights, and swap in - solid; AND you can then double your build costs by adding a Timney trigger group made for Mosins + get an additional safety.

would love to get me a PRETTY sks, one of the clean teak ones. i'm very picky. all my Mosins are *exceptional* and in amazing condition. no bad wood there. two M39s. happy boy.
Ruger 10/22s. so many kinds. first time buyer? i'd suggest the take down model in polymer and stainless. easy peasy backpacker, very "safe" because you can break it down and more easily lock it up. stainless. no weather issues. ever. the new Ruger 25ish round magazines are quite good. scopeable. triggers can be upgraded. good kit.
for the money, pricey, but i want to own the "nordic" version of the 10/22. also known as the SR-22 ready to go. "tactical" lol... http://ruger.com/products/sr22Rifle/images/1236.jpg
or go 10/22 "ATI Destroyer Gray"http://ruger.com/products/1022DE/images/11113.jpg'
just stay away from hipoint![]()
Oh, I completely understand.I just prefer not to shoot the steel cased ammo unless I absolutely have to. Growing up, we'd shoot steel cased through AKs and SKSs... back when they were sub-$100 guns... lol
Really carefully?
Because of the mini-30, I decided to throw together a video for my channel of my wife's first time shooting... ever. This was Sept 15, 2013. Prior to the day on video, she was literally terrified of guns(had some "ex" issues in there to cause it too). On this day I took her to the range and taught her to shoot 3 different guns, a 10/22, Mini-14, and a p89 9mm. Most of the teaching portion is off camera, unfortunately, but I did get some cool moments. In this video she didn't like the 9mm much, but in later trips to the range she warmed up to it and wanted to perfect her use of it.
