Photos A Walk in Nature

CelloDan CelloDan Toby woke in a beautiful location. Nice that you and Diane got to share it with him.
Dan, if you had a bigger boat you too could offer packages like the Kawartha does. You might then profit from helping others to experience the waterway lifestyle that you enjoy or at the very least allow others to fund your adventures. 🤔I'd be you a client as long as you guarantee a pan fish breakfast. 😎 Those are some big ones my friend!

We have quite a solid group of art stone carvers in our area. This past week the local LandTrust has hosted a symposium featuring some of these folks doing their art on the scene. Will be an auction for these and other art piece on Friday. Has been fun to see the WIPs, along with the great local scenery on the walking trails. Not all of the pieces could be completed in the short week time. Too ambitious with tourists being able to walk up and interrupt the works. Still there were a few done on time.

Things we saw today on our walk about ...

That would indeed be a dream job for me
CelloDan CelloDan , wonderful scenery as always. The fish are a good meal for two. Looks like another great trip
Thank you :)

Nice carvings and cool names for them too Ray
We have not been walking much due to our obsessive compulsive sailing and boating lately however we look forward to a nice walk tomorrow afternoon :)

I enjoyed photographing my Verijero with some bowls I turned from firewood we brought from a camping trip a couple years ago.

Happy Day!
Very nice stone carvings and photos

We went for a very nice walk today :)
We were surprised to see how thick the vegetation has grown this year as we had never seen it so lush and dense.

Getting ready for a trip to Saranac Lake, NY to visit our daughters who are working as camp counsellors and take the chance to relax "a little more" out in nature :)
What knives to bring ? 🤔 My little collection is an eclectic mix of about 55 knives.

If I am being 100 % honest and if BF did not exist I would probably just bring my Pioneer X and my #8 Opinel as my knives mostly get to see only light camp duties.

Of course, a stout fixed blade is always good and my Verijero gets to fill that role wonderfully ( and I would never leave it behind regardless )

I am bringing my BF 2022 Bunny Knife and its lovely leather slip to carry it, use it when the chance comes up and to remind me of a special place called "The Porch"

Oh, and I am planning to wear the boina everyday (beret) too :cool:

Dan, you do the porch proud by going so well equipped. Have fun and send pics if possible, especially of the family and you in your boina. Be blessed my friend.

What this thread needs is MORE photos 🤣, so here goes:
I launched my boat near Pennyfield Lock this morning, near the mouth of Muddy Branch. You have to pass through a culvert under the canal there, to get to the river. There was barely enough water in the branch to float my boat - I got hung up on a little sand bar on the way out and had to hop out to drag it over. I managed to stay afloat the whole way on the return trip, though.

The river was very low and choked with aquatic grass, but I made decent progress upstream using a pole for propulsion.

I went about a mile, to some rocks, and fished a little but didn’t catch anything.

No luck at this sandbar, either, but saw a nice catfish go right by me on my trip back downstream. The fishing was just secondary to the “messing about in boats” part, anyway.

So, the canal is running over the top of the culvert? That's interesting 🤔
Pics when you can if you please. Duck go has not been illuminating.

I know - is it a culvert, or an aqueduct, or both? I will try to take pictures next time, but with the overgrown banks there may not be much to see from the top side. I will also see what I can turn up online.

Thanks Tom. Don't spend too much time on it. It's just the geek engineer in me coming out 😁
There is plenty of cool engineering to geek out on along the C&O canal:D:thumbsup:
Here is what I found on Google Earth street view:

Unless you notice the creek as you pass by on the towpath, you may never know there is a culvert there.

Thanks for the pics  The canal doesn't look that navigable.

They keep that section flooded for recreational boating (canoes and kayaks) I think. In a lot of places it’s just the drained canal prism, in varying states of being overgrown.

Edit:
This is one of J jackknife ’s old haunts, I believe. He may have more info on it. It seems to me you could put in the river at Violettes, run through the riffles, get out at Pennyfield, and canoe back to your car on the canal.

The canal itself is drained over most of its length, but a lot of effort is going into restoring it, section by section.

In some areas, there are trees growing in it, but it is part of the US national park system, and the towpath is maintained for its entire length, and there is a connecting rails to trails path that goes all the way to Pittsburgh.

Nice messing about in boats Tom ! 😎
Poling looks like the best way of propelling the boat in the shallow weedy areas.
Were you able to sort of guesstimate the speed ?

A few from this weekend.

Saw several bear:
Wow, great pics 👍
I’ve never encountered a bear in the wild except a couple of times from the safety of sitting inside a car.

There has been several bear sightings this season in our area and especially in densely populated Ottawa of all places.

A bear that kept coming back was put down recently not far from where I my daughter’s violin teacher lives.

Overcast, rainy at times day in Saranac Lake

The only bear I’ve seen was right inside our cabin on the night table 😊
I am not worried as long as my Verijero is close by 😎

Awesome photos.
The last one calls to bounce a buzz bait off the trunk a few times and see what happens
