Photos A Walk in Nature

I visit Harewood Castle 2 or 3 times a year. There are lots of castles near where I live, but this ruin is so tucked away, I've never seen another visitor. I'm going to post some more pics in the Guardians thread, and if you do a search, within the thread, there are lots of other pics of the place

It was cold (16F) and clear this morning. The path I took along the river involves a lot of hopping from rock to rock, and some easy climbing in spots. Ice on the rocks meant I had to spend more time looking at where I put my feet and less time looking at the scenery.

I saw a couple of herons and a cormorant, but nothing else remarkable in the way of wildlife
Love those especially the ice patterns.

A couple of herons and a cormorant went home to their families today and reported " I saw some guy nearly killing himself on some icy rocks, but nothing else remarkable in the way of wildlife." ;)

Great photos J JUST Tom - good that you are a sure footed fellow.

Jack Black Jack Black - Harewood Castle looks like it would be one of my favorite haunts, especially as it is mostly left to itself. Is it haunted after all? Certainly is a dramatic walk about.

Enjoyed the wonderful photos today and tagging along virtually on your walks gents :)
Thanks for the chance to connect with nature as you've experienced it through the little windows that your photos provide.

I also had fun identifying birds and locations using the "google lens" feature on Chrome.
( Red kite, Kingfisher, Grey owl, Chaffinch, Blue tit, Compass jellyfish, the Potomac Great Falls as observed from overlook #3 ? )

My pics feel a bit anticlimactic ... but this is what I saw today :)
Still very cold with no end in sight.
It was - 19 C on our walk and now is down to - 33 C . I don't recall being so call the past few years.

I did remember to bring my gloves today :cool:

To clarify - the rocks you need to hop between are not across the water. Most of the path is jagged rock, so you need to need to sort of hop between the peaks in a lot of places. Here is a picture of part of the path from earlier this fall - note the blue blaze on the rock. It doesn’t really show the rock-hopping part, but you can kind of get the idea.

I’m not sure which overlook it is, but yes, it is Great Falls. I walked from the parking lot at Angler’s Inn up the canal to the falls overlook, then took the Billy Goat Trail (A) back down to Anglers. The Wikipedia article has some decent pictures of it:

That's amazing did you remember your boots? 🤣
I have never seen a sign like that telling you the route depending on footwear.

We need something like that around here.

I keep meeting people in the woods in a wet, boggy,English winter (totally normal winter in fact) in shiny trainers.

Last week 2 couples went past me saying they didn't realise it would be so muddy and had cut short their walk,I was dazzled by the colourful trainers oh and did I mention trainer socks as well.

Hello, I feel like shouting are you entering the Darwin awards, what on earth do you expect,a super highway, maybe a escalator for the hills, perhaps you expect a heated pavement.😁

It is the first year that they posted those signs. Basically they do not want us "boot walkers" 😄 to ruin the snow shoe trails by punching holes into the softer snow. For us boot walkers they pack the snow firm after snow falls and the foot traffic takes care of the maintenance.

They are serious about it and on weekends they even have volunteers at the entrance directing folks to the proper trails.

They have expanded and made a lot of progress in the last couple years with dedicated trails for xc skiing, snow shoeing, fat biking and plain old boot walking :)

We were gifted snow shoes for the whole family a couple years ago but we have not used them yet ... I sort of don't see the point of it 😄

Now fat biking looks very cool  however it does seem a bit too strenuous 😅 lol
We have seen some electric ones which sure look like a lot of fun.

It was a dull and un interesting day today,I went to the other side of the woods.
There wasnt much to see in the flat light, some nature patterns and it looked like a squirrel had been eating nuts where I stopped.

I have totally changed my mind about merino wool fingerless gloves, they work and I love them.

No sign whatsoever of the Rocket Man 😂

throw another log on the fire, brew a fresh pot of coffee and don't let your heart be trouble...
warm blue skies are just ahead 🌥️🌤️☀️
Wow that was almost David Bowie.

Wake up you sleepy head
Put on some clothes, shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me
I've made some breakfast and coffee
I look out my window what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay

Mine is all original but great writers often think alike! ;)
It's quite complimentary to see Bowie's words being so similar although I did have a completely different ending in mind.
Maybe something like;
...a strong arm reached thru the clouds gently lifting me from a storm toss sea
now all of my nightmares are completely vanquished from me
and I am more than a conqueror in him who is my friend...
I wonder who wrote his lyrics. :)

I thought of another song:

Put another log on the fire.
Cook me up some bacon and some beans.
And go out to the car and change the tire.
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans.
Come on, baby, you can fill my pipe,
And then go fetch my slippers.
And boil me up another pot of tea.
Then put another log on the fire, babe,
And come and tell me why you're leaving me.
