Photos A Walk in Nature

We had a bit of an eventful day yesterday.

We had decided to go the the frozen trails with our sleds while our daughters used their skates as usual.

Some may remember that I upgraded the runners on my sled to proper "ice" runners.
The upgraded runners make a huge difference in performance and specially provide much better control of the sled on smooth hard ice.

My wife had decided not to buy them for herself at the beginning of the season however once we tried the new runners it was evident that they were perfect for the ice trails, especially since the owner has been doing such a great job in maintaining the ice.

So I decided to give my sled to Diana and I would skate along with my Nordic skates ( long blades that clip onto xc ski boots which I had not used in 2 years )

Pictured are the Nordic skates blades, my sled with the ice runners and my choice for the day, my red Victorinox Cadet.

Here is a shot of the stock runners. Huge difference !!!
They are quite good actually on rough ice, icy roads and ice covered sidewalks but not on maintained ice or frozen lakes.

OWuxL6I.jpg

So we get to the trails and the last thing I remember was assembling my sled for Diana. Then there are a couple of blurry, dreamy images of being transported in an ambulance. I sort of woke up as it relates to being aware of what happened several hours later, very slowly, in the hospital.

I don't remember clipping my skates on and getting going.
I fell backwards shortly afterwards, hit my head and lost consciousness for a few seconds.
They tell me that when I came back I was able to get up and walk to the car and able to answer questions and converse.

My family noticed that I was disoriented and I kept repeating myself ... " But why do I have these boots on ? "
My daughter decided to call the ambulance. They tell me that I answered the questions from the Paramedics appropriately and that I was very "polite" but I have no recollection of it.

At the hospital it was very surreal. I had no sense of time. I could talk to the nurse, ask for water, a phone etc but hours went by which to me seemed like minutes.

CT scan, blood work was all clear and I was discharged home at 11 pm.
Diagnosed with a mild concussion.

The thing that now bothers me a lot is that I forgot my helmet when heading out. Even worse, I did not even think of it obviously once we got there.
I few years ago I bought a very good helmet for ice skating but somehow it slipped my mind, I do not know how.
Perhaps because we had been kick sledding instead for the past couple of years I did not think of it when preparing to go.
LESSON LEARNED.
Always wear a helmet !

I am ok this am.
Back of the head is a bit sore. I hope what I am typing makes sense though :) ( I'll find out later if it does not lol )

Wow Dan you were very lucky. Glad you’re okay buddy! 😊👍
We went for a hike with our dog out at the historical granite quarry this morning...

Beyond the split rail is a giant hole in the ground where they removed the granite...

Bluey loves it out there and had a lot of fun...

And of course my Usual Lamb was along for the ride...
That’s looks like a very cool place John.
😎👍

A tale of 2 beaches (south of Newquay,Cornwall).

Sunday lunch a massive Cornish pastie on one busy beach, there is more people, more babies and more dogs 🐶

The secound beach had massive scenic sand dunes, crazy surfers and fierce waves.

I have walked too far and am now exhausted, but don’t regret one step not even the waves that nearly knocked me over. ❤️

If it’s this busy in January with most things closed then summer will be crazy.

Hope your head feels better soon! I fell on my head skating a half pipe once and forgot who I was for a while. Even after I came to, I couldn’t remember anything for a day or so. Weird feeling!
*** oh yeah, my helmet was in the duffle bag I left by the side of the ramp***
🤦🏻‍♂️
Thank you G Greasepiggy ! :)
It's a weird feeling indeed. Funny how I was talking to people and sort of making sense of how to answer them but there is zero recollection of it in my mind. And the gradual and very surreal awakening to the awareness of reality is too a very "weird feeling"

Happened wicked fast too, I'm guessing. I have had those millisecond experience of standing then crashing to the icy ground.
So glad you did not do worse damage to yourself. Rest well and heal fully, please.

They must have needed to send a team out to repair the ice. I imagine, if you had known, that would have been more embarrassing than the fall. :) (Geez, with one breath I give concern and with the other I throw you back onto the ice. Only because I know you are OK - I jest.)

I've had a few concussions in my days. Only time I needed an overnight in a hospital, was after my first one - yup - wasn't even born in a hospital. I can relate to the moving around and somewhat appearing normal to casual observers except a bit more loopy than usual that only those close to you can recognize. Good on your daughter to call in for help. Really glad you are OK. You were on my mind this morning before I read this. Sent you a present. Enjoy.

Thank you Ray ! :) , and thanks for the chuckle my friend 😊
Taking it easy today and being amused at what my family tell me I said or did for which I have no memories.
I keep trying to "remember" but the "hard drive for that time slot was wiped almost clean.
Thanks for thinking of me !!! :)

Dan, you can always make a comeback my friend ;)

Thanks for the laugh my friend ! 😄
My wife came at one point and was looking over my shoulder and starting laughing too !

What a scary experience 😬. Glad to hear there was no permanent damage done.

I had obligations this weekend and couldn’t go out for a walk. I was a little disappointed I missed out on being outdoors, but after hearing that @meako almost drowned and you cracked your head on the ice, maybe staying home was better after all.
Gracias Tom :)
I am ok today . There is the sore bump on my head and feeling just a little bit hangover, tired.

Darn it, Dan... Don't scare us like that!
I'm super happy to hear you are okay.

Thank you John for the kind words my friend :)

Sheesh a lesson to us all.
Your family did well, good job you weren’t alone.

I would take it real easy for a few days at least.

Gracias Johnny :)
I'll take it easy for a while and stick to walking for a few days.

LOL 😁
I think I am still not quite at 100 %
When I saw this I kept wondering the meaning of it for a few minutes :D
( wait ... what if I never be normal again 😁)

Oh no Dan, you poor old sausage! I hope you're going to be OK pal, otherwise I'm never going to get adopted! ;)

Have a short stay in the hospital my friend, and carry a Lambsfoot next time! :p

Hey, it could have been worse!

miguel-mercado-gazelle-00.jpg

Thank you Jack, two things I'll make sure when skating again.
1 helmet
2 carry my good luck ebony lamb :cool:
( it's going to be a while though ☺️)
They let me go last night at 11 pm. I was 8 hours + on observation and running blood work and the CT scan but it seems like one hour at most in my mind 🤷‍♂️

Wow Dan you were very lucky. Glad you’re okay buddy! 😊👍

Thank you Todd :)
CelloDan CelloDan Wow Dan!
Sorry to hear of your bout with the frozen trail. First round KO huh? Well... you'll get 'em next time buddy.
But remember your helmet, those ice trails have a black-belt in nearly everything.
Seriously, I'm so glad you're OK...
...also quite proud to know someone with your dedication to SAKs! :)

Gracias James :)
First round KO my friend but I'll be prepared next time ( in due time )
I love my Cadet ( and all my SAK's  )

----------------------

I will head to the basement and see if I remember where the notes on my Cello are :D , I have a lesson coming up on Thursday

PS: This forum is SOO SLOW today 🤪 , even slower than my concussed brain

Thanks for the laugh my friend ! 😄

I have just re-watched the entire Film! :D

Taking selfies with my SAK ?
I do not remember doing that ;)😄

Your family must have been worried

My wife and our girls were very worried indeed :(

I also sent the pic from hospital today to our extended family over our group in facebook messenger.

After posting it I explained what happened and my dear sister posted: " I thought you had cut yourself with the knife" …. LOL 🤣

I had to explain the pic was intended for the Porch which may have confused her even more 🤪

I must say, that before I scrolled down to see your mishap, I was admiring those cross-country skates! :D

Dan!

I hope you feel better and are in good health.

What has happened gives me to think about the causes of such an accident.

Not wearing a helmet can't be considered the root cause. It's the skates that are the problem. These utensils, which many people persist in using, have a major design flaw, they slip on the ice! What caused your fall.

Here's what you need:

Hmmm, I feel that way everyday, let alone after a wack on the head. Glad to see that you are back on the mend.

Thank you !!!😁

While not as effective as the device you posted what I did to my shoes should go a good way in preventing a similar mishap

PS: those are the shoes I use when kick sledding :)

Ice cleats are a great investment for ones well being in colder climates 😅 And they are like $15~$20 a pair...

Ice is slippery...but doesn't help that a sip or two (or more for many of you) of alcoholic beverages 'compound' ones inability to stand straight. I can attest that a pair has saved me multiple times in the past from debilitating falls.

Just a screen shot of a quick search...Many options out there :thumbsup:

Glad you are okay.

My father fell a long ago while he was re-painting the in-ground pool and was knocked unconscious. Was taken to the hospital, and all checked out okay but the doctor told him to take it easy and keep an eye out for any dizzy spells, imbalance, vomiting, etc. That was about thirty years ago and he still doesn't remember the fall or minutes leading up to it. He just remembers being in the hospital.

About a month goes by after the fall, he had a craving for a Subway sandwich so he went to a local Subway, ordered a sandwich and sat down in the restaurant to eat. Well, he told me that his nose started bleeding out of the blue and wouldn't stop. He says it took about eight to ten min of dripping blood that scared him. My father thought that perhaps the 'bad' blood from the fall was getting drained out of his head. He hates doctors so we never figured out why the bleeding happened but wanted to share with you to keep an eye out.

Please stay safe!

Your experience reminded me of why I stopped ice skating fifty years ago. :) Certainly glad you’re doing better.

Thank you my friend !

Same for me. An important rule, i made it my pseudo, "dantzk8".

Dan.

Now that actually makes sense LOL 😁

Thanks folks for the kind words, back to work today ( from home ) and feeling alright, just some residual tenderness on the back of the "noggin" ( a new word I learned today ha ha )

Glad to hear you are on the mend.

new words eh?

try this one

Its a good job you didnt land on yer boat

cockney rhyming slang Boat race= Face (as then they shorten it to one word through the ages).

A Richard is a bird (woman)

Richard the third= Bird

that one took me a long time to work out

I was watching the Sweeny (TV show 1970s) when one said I am meeting a Richard tonight

Sweeny todd = Flying squad

The British certainly have an interesting vocabulary. I watched a show (Red Dwarf?I think) that mentioned a "Barney". Something to do with the Flintstones, and fighting, at least that's what the explanation was until I did a Google search and the definition actually came from the mid 19 century.
From Wiktionary "Barney: Etymology unknown. Often incorrectly thought to be Cockney rhyming slang from "Barney Rubble" ( "trouble", from the character Barney Rubble on The Flintstones), it actually dates back to the 19th century and its origin is unknown."

How the blazes someone goes from the name of a cartoon character to a brawl is beyond me. Still made me laugh though.

Today marks the first weekiversary since the "great fall" 🤪 and the first time outdoors since that "memorable" ( or NOT ) event 🤓.

The day was cold however the sun was shinning in all it's glory and made the forest come alive.

I was lucky enough to get in on a reservation for the upcoming GEC # 77 barlow. I am really hoping for a Mount of Olives one.
So with the anticipation brewing and welling up I decided to bring my other #77 barlow from CK, a 2019 in African Blackwood.

iOYFO5R.jpg

We were very fortunate to encounter a "new to me" critter of the forest clinging to a tree.
This, of course, was the perfect photo op and after VERY slowly approaching it and inching closer and closer I was able to get my photo 😜 ... and I even managed to put my Barlow on the tree:thumbsup::cool:

This seemed to bring up very foggy memories from the past of similar encounters, cant' say for sure 😉

My barlow gave me a little love bite while I was trying to perch it on the frozen hard bark of the tree ... and I did not even feel it.
I forgot I had meticulously sharpened it to exactly 17.121212 degrees and polished it's edge to a mirror finish ☺️

Taking it all in :)

We saw some fatbikers , I mean some cyclists on fat bikes working just way to hard for my liking ... buy hey, to each it's own :)

Hum, this tree seems familiar. Looks like I've seen it before, ... don't know ...the cavity and the shape of the hole 🤨
Anyways, good spot for a photo op
