Wow Dan you were very lucky. Glad you’re okay buddy! We had a bit of an eventful day yesterday.
We had decided to go the the frozen trails with our sleds while our daughters used their skates as usual.
Some may remember that I upgraded the runners on my sled to proper "ice" runners.
The upgraded runners make a huge difference in performance and specially provide much better control of the sled on smooth hard ice.
My wife had decided not to buy them for herself at the beginning of the season however once we tried the new runners it was evident that they were perfect for the ice trails, especially since the owner has been doing such a great job in maintaining the ice.
So I decided to give my sled to Diana and I would skate along with my Nordic skates ( long blades that clip onto xc ski boots which I had not used in 2 years )
Pictured are the Nordic skates blades, my sled with the ice runners and my choice for the day, my red Victorinox Cadet.

Here is a shot of the stock runners. Huge difference !!!
They are quite good actually on rough ice, icy roads and ice covered sidewalks but not on maintained ice or frozen lakes.

So we get to the trails and the last thing I remember was assembling my sled for Diana. Then there are a couple of blurry, dreamy images of being transported in an ambulance. I sort of woke up as it relates to being aware of what happened several hours later, very slowly, in the hospital.
I don't remember clipping my skates on and getting going.
I fell backwards shortly afterwards, hit my head and lost consciousness for a few seconds.
They tell me that when I came back I was able to get up and walk to the car and able to answer questions and converse.
My family noticed that I was disoriented and I kept repeating myself ... " But why do I have these boots on ? "
My daughter decided to call the ambulance. They tell me that I answered the questions from the Paramedics appropriately and that I was very "polite" but I have no recollection of it.
At the hospital it was very surreal. I had no sense of time. I could talk to the nurse, ask for water, a phone etc but hours went by which to me seemed like minutes.
CT scan, blood work was all clear and I was discharged home at 11 pm.
Diagnosed with a mild concussion.
The thing that now bothers me a lot is that I forgot my helmet when heading out. Even worse, I did not even think of it obviously once we got there.
I few years ago I bought a very good helmet for ice skating but somehow it slipped my mind, I do not know how.
Perhaps because we had been kick sledding instead for the past couple of years I did not think of it when preparing to go.
LESSON LEARNED.
Always wear a helmet !
I am ok this am.
Back of the head is a bit sore. I hope what I am typing makes sense though( I'll find out later if it does not lol )
