Congrats to everyone that is on their way to their weight loss goals!

With that said I have noticed some things that concern me so I'll just give some pointers

it's not all about calories - unless your weight loss is just about appearance, there are other numbers you should be focused on to have a healthier life. If you're interested in weight loss for health reasons you should also be looking at protein, carbs, vitamins, healthy fats, etc. otherwise you could be losing weight but become anemic/sick for lack of essential vitamins, protein, etc etc.

Congrats once again to everyone!!!

Down a total of 11 pounds in August. Hoping to get below 300 by the end of the month.

I'm on weight watchers, which I have found in the past to be a pretty sensible way to lose weight. They do go back and forth a little on what's good\bad. When I was on it years ago they pushed the fiber. Now its eat protein and avoid added sugars and saturated fats. Fruits and vegetables are "free" foods unlike in the past (not juices just whole). They acknowledge that stuff like bananas, apples, etc. have sugar and calories but it does encourage me to eat more fruit than I normally would. An unspoken philosophy I think is that nobody ever got fat by eating too many bananas. I'm sure its not absolutely true, but I'm not going out and eating a whole bunch of bananas, but if I eat a couple, it might fill me up so I don't eat a whole pizza, which I would do.

Hello, all. I would like to share what worked for me. Last July I weighed 250lb. I am 5'11". Earlier this week, I was 199lb. The lightest I have been in the last 15mo was 192lb. Alas, I have no pictures from July 2015. I can assure you that I was indeed fat.

Diet:
I went on a ketogenic diet. The place I started was at www.ruled.me and modified that somewhat to incorporate the bulletproof intermittent fasting method as well, wherein for breakfast I drink only Bulletproof coffee (12oz coffee, blended with 2tbsp butter and 2tbsp coconut oil). I found that the addition of particularly the coconut oil provided a tremendous increase in mental acuity throughout the day. The elimination of most carbs (I try now to stay between 20-50g/day) reduced the variation in my insulin levels and stabilization of my blood glucose so I have very few cravings and really do not get all that hungry until 1300 or 1400. I "eat" breakfast at 0700-0800 usually.
Some of you may have reservations about ketogenic dieting because it will increase your cholesterol. I have not measured mine since I started. I am not particularly concerned about it in part because I am relatively young (36) and I do not plan on eating a low carb, HIGH fat diet for the rest of my life.
Macros:
75-80 % FAT (oils, butter, etc)
20% protein
<50g of carbs/day, in the beginning it was less than 20g/day
measure urine ketones every 72 hours using Ketostix

Exercise
I am busy and I hate doing cardio a lot. I have used Jim Wendlers 5/3/1 program since August of 2015. It is very simple, and very quick. I can usually get through my workout in 30-45 minutes.
Here is a link to the book:
https://www.amazon.com/Simplest-Eff...y means- this is just what has worked for me.

Had a cheat weekend at the wife's behest since we were both off. Didn't stray too badly though. Couple of hot dogs on Saturday and a burger yesterday.

Got in some good exercise with the kids too, so hopefully I didn't undo too much work.

Scale's on the fritz. Keep getting wide variances on readings so we'll have to wait for a new one to measure more progress. In the meantime I have had to move down a notch in the belt, which is a good sign.

Back at it this morning with an egg, an apple and some yoghurt for breakfast.

Programs don't work long-term - almost everyone gains the weight back (sometimes more) within a 2-year period. It's about lifestyle. It's very tough to change what you eat for some people, but you can change how MUCH you eat. Don't deny yourself the foods you enjoy but employ portion control. Try knocking off a third of your usual portion. Over time that adds up. Don't be in a hurry - that's another big mistake people make. Allow several years for significant weight loss. The body rebels against sudden changes and will go on the defensive by actually storing fat, thinking it's being starved.

Best of luck and remember, if you do this slowly, you are more apt to keep the weight off.

Totally agree with your statements.

I started in June of this year and have lost ~15 in that time. I use an app call Lose It on my Iphone that I track calories. I didn't try to go too radical just portion control, cut out most of my fried foods and now try to avoid the late night "chip" binge I was guilty of.

I removed sugar from my diet 3 years ago after reading a book called Sweet Poison .
I wasn't looking for a weight lose program , just happened to start the book while on a long distance flight with nothing else to read .
Totally blew me away with the facts and statistics of what sugar ( in particular Fructose ) does to our bodies .
By just monitoring my sugar intake I lost 22 pounds over 6 months .
Very simple to do , and I have no desire or cravings for sugar .
To tell you the truth the few times I have eaten sweet things over the last few years , it has made me feel quite sick because my body isn't used to it and the smallest amount just overloads my senses .
As I said I didn't do this to lose weight , I eliminated sugar after realising how bad it is for the body in other ways , but weight lose was a definate side effect .
There is a distinct difference between getting healthy and getting skinny .
Concentrate on getting healthy and the weight thing will just happen all by itself .

How did you do it? Did you remove added processed sugars (like sodas and processed junk food) or all sugars (i.e. no honey in your tea, maple syrup on your pancakes)? Seems like everything has added sugars. I got some beef jerky the other day for a snack and found that there were 9 grams of sugar in a 1oz bag, presumably because of the marinade.

Yesterday:

Breakfast:
Apple and a piece of sharp cheddar - 200 calories

Lunch:
A McChicken - 330
Unsweetened tea - 25 calories

Dinner:
S.O.S. over home fries - 700 calories
Sweet tea - 150 calories
Green salad with apple cider vinaigrette - 120 calories

Daily total of 1525 calories. Work was exhausting, so no other exercise. Scale's still on the fritz.

At my highest I was around 450lbs. I was in a bad accident and spent about two to three months out of work and at home, away from my usual food haunts. I went down to 350 lbs because of the accident and just staying away from bad food.

Recently I was staying around 415. Sometimes 390, sometimes 415. I was walking a mile a day. Every day. Blizzards and lightning were my only deterrents. But I didn't lose weight, I wasn't eating that great either, cut out bread but got back on that bandwagon. I started taking acidophilus, and a type of fluid pill over the counter that I can't think of right now. For about a month I thought I was gonna die, I was expelling built up fluid. The acidophilus was working too. I was surprised to find that I had lost fifty lbs.

I was even more surprised to find out that I hadn't gained any weight before vacation. I don't walk every day, my walking partner had to be put down, my pup had cancer. 9 years old. I've been walking at least once or twice every week, I've been taking the acidophilus. I really need to get my diet under control. My goal is 250, after that I'll see where I am and what I need to do. My long term goal is a Rocky Mountain hunting adventure. Elk, mountain goats, I don't care, I've always wanted to make it out there. My father and I would work out to prepare for it, then my little brother brought it up as something he wanted to do.

My little brother is 21, he's in great shape, getting married next year. My father is 63, and he's in better shape than me. I need to get my ass in gear. For years I thought my weight or my injuries would take me. Never bad thoughts, never, but now I wanna get my ass in gear.

Hi, just want to chime in with my experience. Like others here I went on a ketogenic, low-carb high-fat, or as I know it, NSNG (no sugar no grain) diet. I've lost about 30 pounds since February and currently lose about 1-2 pounds of fat per week. I don't count calories and I eat 'til I'm full. I've been working out regularly for several years but nothing worked even though I did EXACTLY what I was told, work more, eat less. They were wrong. It's all in the hormones, starting with insulin. Anyway, just wanted to share with anyone curious, it works!

I feel you on this! I was jogging and going to the gym all the time the last year but when I weighed myself I'd be the same weight. Working out a lot, push-ups, etc. but after the news from the dr about the cholesterol I started taking my diet seriously. Before I would make excuses in my mind like "I ran 2 miles...I can eat Taco Bell, or maybe a foot long from subway cause it's healthier!". The weird thing was, I would eat subway, then I'd be hungry again in an hour and be like "I just ate! What the hell am I hungry for?!" Then I'd eat more.

I guess the diet is AS important as the exercise, possibly even more so. My breakfast is A cup of Fage yogurt, plain but with vanilla extract mixed in, homemade granola, and blueberries, and a good drizzle of honey. If I get hungry midday after lunch but before dinner, I reach for salted almonds. I'm blessed with an amazing wife who learned how to roast garbanzo beans and flavor them. We call them "bonzos", and she's made cayenne paprika flavor, garlic flavor, ranch flavor, and even French toast flavor. They're a hit at my office, and they're amazing for you. I'll eat a whole cup of them and not get hungry until dinner. Weird as it is, the less you eat over a few weeks, the less hungry you'll be all day!

Just get over the 2 week hump

I always complain about my weight, there are probably a few threads here about my starting over and getting on the right track.

My long term goals are to get down to 250 lbs, lose diabetes if possible, and cut out all the junk food. Foods that are bad for you, but made with actual natural ingredients (think real foods from the produce/meat section instead of the packaged crap, not Whole Wallet Foods).

Short term, I want to be able to get up and walk without worrying about my knees failing on me, without my back screaming after 3 miles. I just sat here and ate a big breakfast from the work cafeteria, an omelette and some sausage and corned beef hash. No bread, but that stuff wasn't good for me. Then I got three oatmeal stuffed cookies after walking out with my buddies at their smoke break.

Stress over work, stress over $, stress over $, stress over my truck, stress over family and friends, stress over looking at houses. What do I do? Eat, like Godzilla at the buffet. Then worry about that.

Mind over matter, it gets tough when there is a ton of matter to get your mind over. To butcher a lyric, I've got my mind on my food and my food on my mind...

Going to lunch now and will be good, just have to keep in mind that my $ troubles come from my health. Beautiful day today that I could take advantage of, by just going for a hike at a local park along the river, and enjoying a nice cool day. Instead I'm here until the evening taking care of work. Going to try to keep out of my noggin that I need to have enough food to "keep me going" until this evening, as if I can't afford to go hungry for a minute.
