A year alone scenario

Dog
Books
Camera and bunch of batteries and storage cards

This is assuming guns, ammo, knives and fishing gear are all there as well.

I'd also go with the dog.

Interesting that nobody has picked a cat.

7'MH Fishing rod with reel with all the basic tackle.

I can't spend a year without fishing, and this setup beets the crap out of a survival fishing kit.
There is a good range of fishing gear in the in the cabin so you can pick something else mate,:D

Shortwave radio with 200 ft antenna.

Just to hear another voice, remember Tom Hanks in Castaway, he began to forget how to talk after no contact.

Sorry no radios or computers!!!!So please pick again Erdelyi.

I think anybody that WOULDNT pick a dog, either:
A) Has never had a good dog.
-or-
B) Has never lived alone.
-or-
C) Is allergic to dogs.

I was going to go with some form of reading material (either paper or electronic) but then remembered we were talking about a YEAR.
I can tolerate being alone probably as well as most...But a YEAR? No thanks. I'll have a dog please.

Full disclosure: I don't currently have a dog because my lifestyle (single and I travel 5 to 10 times per year) dosen't permit it. Also, my house has almost no back yard. A big honking 2.5 car garage...errr, shop, but a back yard smaller than my kitchen. I still get misty thinking about, and missing, the only dog I have ever had in my adult life, so I know how important they can be.

I think we are all in agreement, a dog is the best choice. Cats aren't so bad, dogs are better, but cats can be good companions too, especially with no one else to talk to.

Aside from that, I would go with a nice down comforter and maybe a good pillow.

Has anyone said a soap? You don't need it but being able to wash yourself and clothes every few weeks would be real nice...

Well I think the premise is that you have all the essentials. The question is what luxury item would you most want.

365 jugs of Whiskey. It can be used as disinfectant, make the time pass more quickly, make all the friendly bushes seem even more friendly, painkiller and more!
Or a bunch of moleskine books, and a fisher space pen with a few refills.

My Pelican Shakespeare and one of the puppies from next door; half Great Pyrenees and half lab:eek: Can you say "Call of the Wild?" :)

I often find the company of my dog much preferable to humans, so I will my dog also.

My acoustic Guitar and a few extra sets of strings and a tuning rod (so i dont have to worry about the batterys dying in an electronic tuner) I would be Eric Clapton when you came and found me after the year...well close anyways.

Great Thread.

I have the Sony ebook and a Kindle. I would take the Sony full of books as I like it better. I could make a baby raccoon a pet but I could not stand not being able to stimulate my mind. Of course I might give up the Sony for Jessica Alba.
