ABS Expo-San Antonio Knives

Thanks for those pics Kevin.

Sadly, I never got to handle the el diablo. I kept wandering by the table all day, but just never saw it. It's gorgeous, as is the Texas bowie, which I did get to handle. It's very clean as you said, and quite large as well ---very nice.

Hey xaman; what is the blade length and OAL dimensions on the John White gentleman's bowie?

Great knife!

Thanks ~Corbin

Never mind, found the info on a different thread!

Great knives across the board. Burt's dagger is so far beyond awesome I'll have to consult a thesaurus.

We're home now... and man, what an awesome experience!

Eli, it was great to finally meet you. Having conversations like the one I shared with you and Burt is what makes shows fun for me! :)

Kevin, it was great to see you again and get to actually hang out at this show! :)

As some of you know, I had a big, fat damper thrown over the show for me, but I still had a GREAT TRIP!!! :)

I got to see many of the best bladesmiths in the world, and experience a totally new city. San Antonio was just awesome. We spent some extra time and I'm so glad we did. Seeing the city from the viewing deck of the Tower of the Americas was just freaking amazing.

FYI- Burt's dagger was simply one of the coolest knives in the whole show... just spectacular!!!

Thank you so much to everyone that I got to spend time with.... even that Bill Wiggins character and the death racer John Perry! ;) :D

Well Burt is seems that a few of the guys have had the priviledge of seeing your dagger. I'm sure that there are many more who might like to see it as well. How about posting a pic here?

Mike, see page 2 of this thread.

Nick, it was great to meet you as well. I regret not having the privilege of handling your blades :(

Burt's dagger was outstanding to say the least, and I love the box. Honestly Burts table alone would have been worth a trip to San Antonio. I cannot believe the giant chopper made it through the show. That one would be mine if it had a guard (I'm not saying it needs one, this is an amazing knife and feels perfectly secure. I just have a strong personal preference for guards.) The sheephorn Persian was possibly the best value of the whole show, what a knife!

Eli, next time! :D *fingers crossed* lol :)

Oh, and I forgot some things (still halfway in Texas I think, lol)

I forgot to mention what a sucky photographer Erik Fritz is... the three knives of Erik's I saw at the show were superb. Great design and BEAUTIFUL finish work... which you really had to see in hand to appreciate. :)

John White's knives were, of course, fantastic. Each one dressed in a beautiful Paul Long sheath. Another highlight for me, was meeting Paul!!! :)

I also brought home Tim Hancock's book.... kudos to Tim and David... the book is AMAZING.

And watch out for Bill Burke... that guy is out of control! (in a VERY good way) :)

I'm sure I'm still forgetting a lot... but this thread will probably still be here when I get back ;) :D

Hey Burt! Everybody is complimenting your dagger and I think that's a good thing, but what impressed me the most was that box. It is extremely hard to get that much matching wood from one Orange crate. Oh, I suppose the dagger was pretty nice too, but it's too bad about that stain that ran all around the blade.:D:D:D

It was really great to hook up with you again, mi compadre. Do well and I'll see you next at Blade 2010!!!

Paul

Nick, I really enjoyed meeting you. I believe Burt is nearly over his mad spell for leaving him. Next time I see John, I am going to tell him about things like speed limits and turn lanes.:D:D

I had a great time and enjoyed seeing everyone. Sold out on Friday, but thats easy when you only bring one knife!! Eric took a pic. of it and I will post it when I get the digital file.

I am looking foward to next year. Hopefully, Nick's knives will make the show as well next year!! And last, I have to mention all the hats. While there was not an award for best hat, my money would have been on Eric Fritz!!

You run into guys like Burt Foster that you couldn't dislike even if you tried, and then he introduces you to another such fellow, named Bill Wiggins. Bill Wiggins is one of my new favorite people.

Of course Bill and I will forever be able to say that he, John Perry and I crushed all of Burt Foster's hopes and dreams in one fell swoop by having lunch at THE BEST BBQ joint in all of the great state of Texas without taking Burt. Hopefully for the sake of knife collectors worldwide, Burt will be able to recover.

For what it's worth Burt, it was a very snug fit for me in the backseat of the phone charger on wheels.... I dare say your much longer legs may not have fit even if we had thought to invite you.

:D :p :D

Was nice seeing you again and hanging out Nick.

How did Bill think that Texas BBQ compared to the FINE North Carolina stuff?

What does a guy from Starbucks Land know about barbecue? Stick to coffee and funny looking clams, my boy....lol. If you asked folks from the area, many would tell you that the best 'cue is to be found at Kreuz Market in Lockhart.:D

I don't know anything about "cue" but I know that for the sake of making Burt Foster feel more left out it was quickly named the best bbq joint in all of the land! :D :p :D

Mike, see page 2 of this thread.

Dang! Don't know how I missed those pics. Awesome job all the way around Burt. What a beautiful piece of artwork. I really love those laminated blades and that handle makes me want to grab hold and not let go! (and if I get my hands on it I won't! haha).
Mike

While it's true that I was momentarily crushed when my good friends Bill, Nick and John went to lunch without me, letting me face the very real chance of starving to death before the banquet that night, it all worked out because my VERY good friends Bailey, J.W., and his wife Tammy did NOT forget me and we had a delightful panini together; far superior to the sphincter scorching BBQ you guys had. God was looking out for me. (and yes, I did have to look up the spelling of "sphincter" in a dictionary.)

Thanks for all the compliments on the dagger. It'll be up on www.virtualknifeshow.com in a couple days. Paul, I'll try to scrub off that stain before I list it. Thanks for noticing that.

Well, I'm in survival mode after all the fun in San Antonio. The old Gunter Hotel hasn't seen such exotic characters since the master Robert Johnson recorded his blues legacy there in the 30's.

Not only did I corner the market in Paul Long sheaths, I had the actual Paul Long himself at my table ragging me unmercifully all show long. Kevin J., Paul, and I had our own Tex-Mex feast at a nearby restaurant, and then strolled thru the 100 degree heat to the historic Paris Hatters, where I bought a massive Stetson and had it custom fitted.

Endless knife and life talk with Nick, John P., Burt, B.Wiggins, T. Vandeventer...wait, there's more.. you shoulda been there. Somebody's got to do a detail review, but I'll just say I actually held Larry F's Voodoo folder, and it gave me that chill.

John
