Seems like it’s been slow for awhile… maybe it’s just me but I’ve put stuff up at what I think are low prices comparatively, and bites are few and far betweeen. I also see lots of other posts with zero replies and exclusive knives sitting around at good prices, when they have historically been swooped up quick. What do y’all think?

While we're having a brief discussion regarding the Exchange, let me share this...

We are having issues with an influx of ne'er-do-wells of late...both of the domestic and foreign variety.

Some of these folks are simply out and out new scam artists, others have hacked the (mostly dormant) accounts of respected members. Update your passwords with complex, or hard to guess, characters or phrases. Don't use the same password on multiple sites.

Do not fall prey to your lust for a good deal. Do your homework and know whom you are dealing with. Ask questions. Get phone numbers and / or emails. Check the posting history and see when the individual(s) last posted on this site.

Check out the language and actions of the seller for telltale signs that the person is or isn't the person they claim to be. Unwillingness to provide you with your request is a sign of something not being right. It's your money, don't just give it away foolishly.

Ask for fresh images of the knife with some sort of identifying data...name, date, etc Look at the images provided and see if they have been taken from an ad or someone else's posting.

If the deal seems too good to be true...there's a pretty good chance that it is. Don't be a loser. Live to buy and trade another day. No deal is worth losing your hard earned money over.

Caveat Emptor.

Finally seeing a market correction. Prices have been unnaturally inflated since the shortage the china flu brought about. Prices are starting to come down and some formally real hot knives are sitting longer as the sellers come to terms with the reality.

Buyers market for sure.
You should see the blood bath in the watch markets...

Quite comical.

Ive heard it’s a free for all. And to be honest I don’t mind as Ive always wanted a Rolex so prices tanking will be very good for me.

I browse the Exchange everyday and this has been my impression as well.

It's definitely a buyer's market now. Most knives won't move unless they are priced at significant discounts from original retail and 2ndary market pricing of only a year or so ago. However, knives that remain in demand still sell quickly, even if if they are priced on the high side. CPK is an example of this.

But, markets move in cycles. So, if there's a knife you want to buy, now's the time to buy it.

-----------------------------------------------

On the other side of the equation, it seems that the knives being offered for sale are also quite limited. Limited mostly to common, ordinary knives that most "collectors" already own. Potential sellers, like me, also simply may not be posting any of their knives for sale because of the low sales prices.

So, these factors may also be limiting sales activity on the Exchange.

I wouldnt expect it to be below MSRP for quite some time. but near MSRP on the secondary is happening.

The removal of prices has slowly been killing off the market here IMO, or at least it's greatly reduced my own purchases. People only buying and selling here don't know how to price things and tend to go too high and lag behind market movement. For example, CRK Umnumzaans--MC included and especially tantos because there have been so many drops--have been at most MSRP other places for 6-12 months now, and you'll rarely see one here under MSRP. At this point even FB sales groups aren't pricing Zaans as high as they are listed here.

I've moved my buying and selling off to Reddit mostly where it's a rule the sales price has to stay up (and they have better rules for protecting from scammers). The market is also larger so there's more to buy, and more people are willing to accept G&S. Here the percentage of F&F-only sellers is way higher.

The removal of asking prices on The Exchange always has been a big complaint of mine.

Don't know why people find it necessary to do that. You can just overstrike or gray out asking prices and mark the knife as sold, without disclosing the actual sales price which may be different.

Easy to change the rules to prevent it but the people in control here have never wanted to do that. 🤷‍♂️

------------------------------------------

FWIW, in order to prevent this, when I buy a knife on The Exchange, which I did recently, in my "I'll take it post," I'll usually say something like "I'll take it for your asking price of $xxx" which the seller cannot remove. So, if I get it, people will always know what the knife sold for.

I've noticed that some other people do this as well but, if everyone did, then the selling prices for most sales would remain out there.

Of course, this won't work for PM sales which are entirely private.

-------------------------------------------

As far as Reddit & FB are concerned, I've never used them.

I've got a lot of knives that I've wanted to sell for a couple of years but I've put that off because of the drop in prices, here & elsewhere, but, I'll probably put some of them up for sale on EB (despite the fees) because it's easier to sell stuff there.

Can't sell on FB because I don't & never will use it. Reddit seems too amorphous & disorganized to me but I might try to sell some autos/balis that I can't/don't want to sell elsewhere, if they don't sell here.

Not totally sure. On the main subreddit for knife sales I've seen custom makers and at least a couple dealers post sales there, but definitely the large majority is regular private sellers. I'm not sure if there are maker-specific sales subs, but there are discussion ones for makers that are pretty active (r/bladesmith and r/knifemaking have 100k+ followers, r/blacksmith is 250k+, then there are custom makers who post their work to the generic ones as well, which are like r/knifeclub at ~200k and r/knives at ~300k)

I've never understood the reasoning behind removing prices. As either a buyer or seller I want to be able to research past sales to make informed pricing decisions.

The vast majority of my knife transactions are on r/knife_swap for several reasons, the price history being one of them (it did not always used to be left up but has been a rule for several years now). It's also much more active, and additional discussion is much more accepted (and often entertaining).
