Advice

The main drawback of the ZT0770 is the assisted opening; but a number of people say it flips great with the spring removed. What do YOU think of the blade shape. There were SFOs made in M390 and M4.

As long as we're on ZT, what are your thoughts on the 0456? The 0095 isn't quite there right blade shape; but worth considering.

The Hinderer MP1 is a great option; but I don't know if you'd find it in your budget.

I use a civivi elementum wharncliffe at work. Which I really like.

One of the things I found important at work was the ability to pull it out, use it then put it back so that it is not lying around somewhere waiting for the next job. Or for someone to cut themselves. And the flipper linerlock does that really well.

Otherwise the knife itself cuts amazingly well and I am very happy with it.

Here is the Damascus. I have the nitro v.

And I believe aftermarket scales are pretty common.

I'd recommend the Knafs Lander 2, with S35vn blade that seems to be heat treated properly, arrived sharp and has remained so since which is a nice thing.

and as time goes on, there are secondary suppliers that are making scales to swap out so if you grow tired of the blue, you will have some options and it's very easy to change the scales out without having to dismantle the entire knife.

What a great reply. Thank you! To answer your question. The blade shape is more sheeps foot than I was looking for, but it would certainly fit my need. Think more like a bunka like (or nakiri). The 2nd ZT (with the blue pivot) is very close to the blade style I was thinking. Please forgive me if I should know what that model is. I' do some digging and try to find it when I get home. The MP1 would work well too, but as you said, unless I find a steal, it'll be out of my budget.

Thank you for the input. I have not considered that model but worth a little digging into.

The second ZT with the blue pivot is a ZT0456. Unfortunately discontinued but they do come up on the secondary market from time to time.

Thanks. The blade shape is not what I'm looking for. I did look at the Knafs line and saw the MKM Yipper. That looks like the shape I'm looking for but it's out of stock and I don't know where it is manufactured at.

I'll start digging and see if I can turn one up. Depending on dim's, that is a solid choice for me needs.

The 0456 is a little chunk. A lot of people criticized it as a pocket hog; but I really like it. If it wasn't a flipper, mine would have seen a lot more carry time.

I dig a bit of digging last night on the 0456. I think that it's going to be too wide for me too. I really wish that manufacturers would standardize specs! Wish in one hand...

I love it in hand, and it doesn't bother me in the pocket.

The 0095 , pictured right above it, has a blade shape between the 0456 and 0770. It is also "slicier" than ZT was known for at the time. The blackwash version was standard in US. There was also a black DLC version which supported s90v and a stonewashed (?) version that I believe was exclusive to Russia.

Huge fan of the Quiet Carry series, I have a drift and it’s my current go-to when I don’t have the right pocket for a Sebenza or Inkosi that day. It’s also easier to stomach an extra ~$50 on your budget, not to mention it’ll make you catch the frame lock bug and drive you towards a CRK in a few months anyway.
I've gone back and relooked at the iQ. I'm pretty intrigued. Have you had any manufacturing issues? Have you dealt with the company on any level other than purchasing? I assume the Taiwanese manufacturing is not an issue. Anything else you can share? What steel(s) are your Quiet Carry's. I'm not familiar at all with ELMAX. The 20CV is not daunting to me at all. Considering the "work" nature of this tool, I have no idea how the ELMAX will hold up.

There is more belly there than I was looking for on the 0095.

I think that I am 80% there. I've really been taken with the Quiet Carry iQ. It is different than anything I have. I know that it is not manufactured here but a large part of the company is rooted here. The other 20% is the Malibu. Digging into ELMAX info now and that's probably what has kept me from pulling the trigger.

Sorry Ralph - busy week at work and didn’t see this quickly enough. Quality on mine exceeded my expectations - zero blade play, perfect blade centering, very smooth action right out of the box. Curiosity got the best of me so I took it apart right away, and it went back together without any finicking.

As for the blade steel, it *should* be easier to sharpen than 20CV. I went with Vanax in mine, which is a bit softer than then ELMAX, I imagine the elmax just holds an edge longer. You’ll have to let us know what you think!

Just thought I'd pass along an update. I received the QC iQ in the mail yesterday. I'm pretty impressed. The quality is excellent. The action is buttery smooth. The finish is superb and professional. The blade was as sharp as I would expect right out of the box. I have stropped it to clean up the bevel and it improved. The size is a little smaller than I had envisioned. I knew it would be smaller than my regular EDC's, but I think that in my position and what I will use the knife for at work, it will be be fine. I won't reprofile the blade until it proves that its factory bevel in 20CV just won't hold. I still need to measure the factory bevel. I'm not sure what was decided on at the factory. Below is a pic of my current fleet of EDC's for comparison. I have to say that I am also impressed with the Korean manufacturing. This is the first non American manufactured knife I have purchased in 30'ish years. Once more, thank you all so much for chiming in on this. I did learn a thing or two and I appreciate all of you taking time out to to help me.

I thought I would give you all a final update on the iQ. I've been carrying it for a week now everyday both at work and in regular life. Would I buy it again? Nope! Probably not for the reasons you're thinking.

The blade and handles perform well for my daily tasks. It is relatively comfortable to handle. It is easily manipulated in my daily cutting tasks. The edge so far is holding up. This is really not a significant point for me though. I'll end up sharpening it soon. BTW, the blade angle measured out about 19 degrees. Aesthetically I still like this knife. It has a bit of class. This is my first Wharncliffe and I'm very happy with the shape.

Seems like there is nothing there to warrant not being willing to buy it again, huh. The single biggest flaw is the pocket clip! Maybe if I wore slacks and suit jackets, the thin material would not pose an issue. Even though, I am the boss, I still work out there with my team. I wear Levi's, Carhartt's, and Dickies clothing to work. This pocket clip is so tight that it will shred my pocket very soon. The second issue it that every edge is so sharp that it can cause discomfort if it is bumped with a hand or wrist. The end of the clip could be used as a straight slot screwdriver if it was attached. I have always replaced all my clips with MXG Gear deep carry clips. I have never had a single complaint with how those clips work or feel. If I was willing to pull the clip and just let it float around in my pocket, this would be a very good knife. I'm not willing to do that.

Thanks again everyone.

Sell some of my knifes? I think you need more coffee. hehehe
I did look at the Sebenza, but it was out of my price range (for now).
It's never out of your price range as long as you like Ramen for awhile lol. Seriously I'd just buy a sebenza or an inkosi and be done with it. Buy once cry once brother. And we are here to support your knife buying 😁
