Age Group?

No law in my home state of TN restricting purchases of knives by age (I searched the entire, current, on-line list of TN laws for the word "knife" and read every law - nothing about age). Maybe some federal statute, though, I don't know, nor do I care about the requirements for on-line sales of pocket knives. In any case, it is rather off-topic and somewhat derailing the spirit of the thread.

Many of us had our first exposure to pocket knives in our youth, perhaps as gifts from parents or hand-me downs from family members. So it is definitely part of the "tradition" of traditional knives that young people (as in "Boy's Knife") are owners and users of pocket knives, and as such they are welcome participants in this forum as far as I am concerned.

That's how I took it, for sure. Like I said, I just didn't want somebody that was insecure about the matter to feel like they shouldn't be able to say their age. I'd assume that you have a vested interest in seeing young people take up the hobby, and I'm certainly sharing it with my kids and the kids under my care in the Cub Scouts. :D I think it's awesome that the teenagers are here, whether they're buying for themselves or having their parents buy for them. Heck, I'd venture to guess that most of them know more about knives than I do. ;)

I've carried a pocket knife every day of my life since I was 6 years old. Of course they're welcome participants. Nobody ever said otherwise. And just to keep on topic, I'm 61 years young.

Average age is 45. Youngest is 15, oldest is 74.

Math isn't my strong suit, so don't, you know, gamble your life's savings on the accuracy of these results. :D

Jackknife : Looks like you and I are still the oldest. Come on you old guys , fess up.

Just because something happens, ie. purchasing a knife, doesn't mean it's legal. As I stated before these laws are mostly ignored nationwide. Doesn't mean they don't exist. If you look at any Online Knife purveyors site, there will be a Legal Disclaimer stating something to the effect that by purchasing a knife you are claiming to be Legally Entitled to purchase and possess said knife, mostly stating that purchaser is at least 18 years of age.

I took it as such, mine was as well. That's why I added the anecdote, which is a very fond memory of mine.

I joined BF when I was 17... And definitely bought a good few knives that year. Don't tell the government! ;)

Good job, Dadpool!

Younger crowd than I thought... it's good to see.

ETA: And many thanks to Buckaroo Knives. This has been a very interesting/informative thread!

Harry, I refer you to post #98 so that you may bump the average age up a bit. I don't like to draw attention to myself especially in the age department, but for the sake of us all (at great personal sacrifice), the stats need to rightly reflect the maturity of this group.:D
Oh, and Harry. Thanks for the work on the graph. Upon reconsideration, maybe you should just leave it be thus reflecting a younger less geriatric crowd.

That is not entirely correct. It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 years to purchase a knife. Even in Pennsylvania. The Law is completely vague about POSSESSING a knife. And the Law is rarely if ever enforced. I am quite familiar with the knife laws of Pennsylvania.

Texas has no law specifying a minimum age to buy a knife. Some retail establishments have their own policies, but even those are relatively few.

And 6 members not of legal age to purchase a knife. Just sayin'.... :D

Yabut legal to post on BF.
Like you Bob, I've carried a knife since I was somewhere between 6 & 8. Carried it to grade school and nobody raised an eyebrow.

Stand Straight, my apologies -- I don't think I caught your post in my trawl, or there'd be a 68 in that graph already!

I saved my original Excel file, and I might do an update if enough folks add their ages to the thread post-graph.

Hmmm? Guess I got two posts mixed up. My apologies to you.:o

I'm feeling old - I'm 70. I did get a fine Father's Day present, though or Grandfather's Day present, a Boker Damascus Kwaiken which made me feel young again. I still want more new knives and I still hold my wife's hand, so maybe I don't feel too old..

I have you by 4+ years and I still have the same wants and have held my wife's hand for over 54 years.
