Ahem... The Caly 3 is Here!

It doesn't make sense to me that the Caly 3 costs about the same as a Manix.

Both have premium blade steel (VG10 and S30V), both have G10 scales, and both have dual steel liners. Why would it cost less?

Well it is about a third the size of a Manix and it uses rivets instead of torx just to start.

Before you know it, you will be pushing 50, wondering where those last 30 years went!!

Ron

Tell me about it! :(

On a less depressing note, I have three Caly IIIs enroute to me :D

Thanks for the info on the Collectors Club. Doesn't sound like it's for, for one reason, I don't like SE blades, and another, I'd like to be able to pass on a knife I don't care for. I do see benefits of being a member, like some great limited editions and very collectable knives!

I got my email from new graham last night, I ordered it this morning, I had the choice of serrated & plain edge.

I had been on waiting list for months, but it was worth it.

total damage with s&h is $103.80.

I am also on the wait list for the ZDP-189 LUM, Micro Dyad & the hossum fixed blade. - I hope they don't all come at once, I got to save up cash again.

No - one of my sons would be really disappointed.

(Pssst. Don't tell anyone, but call New Graham) ;)

I thought I remembered hearing you say somewhere that you had gotten one for your sons. Very nice thing to do!! I hope they love them. I wish my dad would do something like that. He doesn't even call me:( .

Take care, Ron

It is a little more than I thought it would sell for "on the street". For some reason I was thinking $75-80. I don't know if I had heard that or if I just assumed it for some reason.

I really wish they would make a version that was about 7/8th the size of the large Calypso (not JR.) in G-10. I like the Jr. size as well but it is a tad small for an EDC IMHO. I prefer about a 3 1/2" blade for general use. You can't even cut a sandwich or apple in half with the puny CJ.

When people get one, tell us what you think of the weight. For a small knife, I think it should be light. If it is a little brick, I would REALLY prefer a longer blade. That is sort of the reason I am not crazy about the Delica 4. If I am going to carry a knife that heavy, it might as well be a little larger.

Oh, well! I am going to get one anyway I'm sure.

Whenever you guys start receiving them I'd love to see some reviews of them being used on a variety of objects. Compared side by side to the Manix or Mini-Manix would be even better.

gotta get one. Just lost my Calypso Jr 2 last weekend, so it's timely. What was newgraham's pricing on this?

originally wanted 2, but I gotta save up for the ZDP/carbon fibre version as well.

Am I wrong or did I read somewhere that these were supposed to retail around $75? I was banking on buying one at that price.

I'm kind of upset at the price, I'll be holding off on one for a bit. My D4 will tie me over until then.

Mine should be here on Friday. I'm not a particularly good reviewer, but I will do some photos of them with other Spydies for a visual comparison.

Price per was $96 and change. Hell, I can make money, I can't make knives. :p

If you compare prices on that same website of the Manix and the Mini-manix, you'll notice that there's no or little price difference despite the size difference between those variation. That is because with these premium materials, the cost of manufacturing is the more significant and defining cost, rather than the difference in materials cost for a slightly larger or smaller design.

Comparing (imported) apples to apples on that same site, the Caly 3 is in the same price range as the Persian. The Caly is a few dollars more, but is has dual liners. Likewise, the Caly 3 is priced lower than the Captain and the Ocelot, to which it is also comparable in terms of materials and size.

The mini manix is still bigger than the Calypso but I digress. What about the fact that the calypso uses rivets and the Manix uses torx? You didn't respond to that. Also it seems most high end knife makers believe s30v is a better steel than VG10 so I don't know if I would equate the two. You have Chris Reeve, Strider, Rick Hinderer, Benchmade, and many others that utilize s30v in their best knives. If you want to pay $100 for a Calypso go ahead I persoanlly think it is about $20-$25 over priced.

While I personally prefer S30V, there are a lot of users on this forum who prefer VG-10. Again, compare the Caly 3 to the other Seki-made, VG10/G10 knives in its size class and it is in the same ballpark. The Persian is also riveted, and again within a few dollars of the Caly 3.

I am one of those users that prefer VG-10 over almost any other steel even S30V. To me VG-10 provides a great combination of edge retention, hardness, minimal chipping and ease of sharpening. Don't get me wrong I love my Manix but it's not because of the S30V..it's because of the overall design.

I didnt say what users prefered. I said many prmium knife makers use s30v and not many at all use VG10.
