How about Cold Steel training knives? ;) You can practice with them and later get the real thing and already be proficient. TA-DA :D

Being respectful and carrying out to the wishes of one's parents
is a commendable act of filial piety.
A virtue that is slowing eroding in many social structures.
For op's sake, I do hope that such acts of personal sacrifice
are what which maketh a good son in the eyes of his parents.
After all, maintaining a healthy chid-parent relationship
is worth far more the effort of any required personal sacrifice
to some budding interest of a mere hobby.
Which can never match the lifelong benefit of having
understanding parents who show nothing but care and concern for their off spring.
It would be most regrettable to ignore parental advise (no matter how absurd)
as blood ties is the one single thing which matters the most in life.
Good for you op! Just remember that once a knifenut... Always a knifenut ;-)
There will be happier times ahead! So stay sharp always.

Be a man and forge your own path...

My parents told me I couldn't get motorbikes, guns, knives, tattoos, etc... and I told them to go F themselves each and every time. I never hid anything. I did what I wanted, and they respected me for it and we have a great relationship as a family.

If they only knew what some of these knives actually cost... omg, they'd have simultanious heart attacks!

I love my parents too but I would honestly just hide my knives and say I got rid of them, and also plan to move out. Or take the opportunity to downsize, sell all but one or two.

It's not warm when she's away...

NOTE
: I love my parents more than anything, and I can understand where they are coming from, so I will not hold anything against them, and neither should you. ALSO HI FBI & NSA

WELP. LITERALLY 1 YEAR INTO THIS HOBBY (bought the CRKT drifter on April 13th 2017) AND... Time for a goodbye. AND to air out my dirty family laundry.

So remember how I posted a video of my Lionsteel roundhead? I enjoyed it and it was great. Unfortunately, my parents weren't as big of fans.

My dad came in with a "Don't you know the FBI's watching you, delete that g****m video" (read it like you're my chemical romance lol). So he told me to throw all my knives out until my mom stepped in. She explained to me that the FBI is watching me and that this might hamper my future in law enforcement (Jokes on them, because the FBI/NSA already knew about this considering my search history on Amazon to begin with).

I already knew that this would possibly be a reality so I was already prepared to throw everything away at a moments notice. They told me that they viewed them as weapons (which we've already talked about), and that advertising that I have weapons to the world is a way to destroy my future in law enforcement. TBH I don't really have a use for knives in my life, so I couldn't really justify having one (SD is not a viable use for me, and that will be the end of that conversation). (Cutting down boxes? Boxcutter. Opening letters? Scissors. Yes my knives did make them a little easier to handle, but it's not the end of the world)

So the compromise that they made me is that I could keep my sharpmaker, but had to throw out all the shiny and sharp things. No, I couldn't sell them because it would be the same as selling weapons to them. And they told me to pick up a new hobby so it's whatever. (I'll try and see if I can get back the money that I just threw away)

Please don't be angry towards them, they truly do care. And we come from a country where people are stabbed with kitchen knives, so please try to empathize with why having a Cold Steel knife is not pleasant for them to see.

It was fun while it lasted, and I really did learn a lot here. I might eventually pick up a multi-tool, or have my own collection when I actually get a job as an LEO, but it can wait for now. I'll keep this account (if what they said is true, then I've already made my bed) and still interact with the community as best as I can, make my youtube/insta private AF, delete all my imgur images, and have everyone's fantasy come true, not to have to worry about spending money on knives (yes I know it's different, let me have this lol)

I can't stress this enough, I still love my parents. Getting rid of my knives is something that I mentally prepared for since day 1 of making my first purchase. Also, I am too easy to DOX. And why don't I have my own place yet? Because it actually would've made this situation 10x worse. They would've stripped that place clean leaving me without even a kitchen knife to cook with. At least living at home allowed me to come forward on my own and get rid of everything that I have on my own terms.

...Anytime she goes away, anytime she goes away, anytime she goes away...

I never gave any thought to being watched for collecting knives. Even I'll admit, it's a pretty lame hobby after a while, but what hobby isn't. I think it would depend on what other things you are involved in.

The FBI, NSA and local police watch everyone no matter what they do, so you may as well just enjoy life and go about your business doing the right thing. People doing the wrong thing will be dealing with them eventually if there is a God.

I don't see collecting knives as doing the wrong thing. They are hardly weapons...yea, sure, a kukri is dangerous but in general a 4 inch folder is laughable as a weapon in the realm of things when people drive cars and firearms are so plentiful. There are probably 100+ million firearms in the US right now. Collecting knives is nothing special in my mind.

I've already had an interview with the FBI, that's another story (employer ripped me off for $35,000 and they then called the FBI on me to silence me on Internet, that was wonderful)....and believe you me, they do watch "stuff" but I don't think collecting knives is what they're all about. I think it's pretty harmless as a hobby. Now if you're the type of person to go about making threats to people the local police probably have you on the radar, but you don't sound like that is a problem that you have.

Your parents don't seem right at all on the matter.

If you're 22, you are at least four yrs late from being on your own. It's time; live your life; be a man.
Love your parents, but get out and stay out. Get a job; rent a place. Use your own mind to make decisions in your life. It's what men do.
If you have no clue, join the mililtary. Pick a branch that will train you in a field that you find interesting. They will house you, feed you, train you, and you will be providing a service to your country.
Or, work at McDonald's until you figure out something better.

Big brother is always oh so kind to us lol. This definitely is going to put a stop for me buying bigger knives, because I don't have any desire to EDC a big knife anymore, it feels too flashy for me.

I do have an above minimum wage job right now, and I have college in order to finish up my degree. I don't think that I'll move out because of the knife thing, but it is definitely a wake-up call to what I want (meh sharp sticks) and what I need in order to have them (...landlords...). I have a couple years of college left, and then I'll be going back for the IDF (I really don't like fixed blades though lol) so it's just a little setback for a hobby.

THIS!!!!

Thank you Sonny for saying what I was thinking.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I just wanted to add, my brother is a Chicago Cop, and I look out for him. He was attacked in Chicago in uniform going to work by a guy with a ten page rap sheet. He did not want to shoot the guy b/c the .45 he was carrying that day had not been registered with the department so he fought with the guy hand-to-hand for 5 minutes. Because I've got the martial arts background, I immediately recommended knives and other less than lethal palm type defensive weapons.

I bought the both of us some steel bodied pens before his encounter, which he used against the perp, and I bought him a ZT 0452cf afterward because it is more of a deterrent.

In any case, where I was going with this is that although mom and bro know that I've started collecting knives, they only care about the COST of such a hobby. It is terribly expensive and my brother would rather I spend my time working toward a new car, retirement, etc.... and all that I've got to say abt that is to each their own, based on what they make. He's making $85K/yr and I'm not. I hate to admit it but he's greedy and loves big ticket items, and I've never had that luxury.

I'm alive and I deserve to be happy now and enjoy life. If it takes a $500 folder to rock my world, then so be it.

The FBI doesn't care about pocket knives. LEO background's wouldn't even ask. If You own an illegal knife, that's a different story, but minor. I'd worry more about the psychological profile.

This.

Also, when it comes to vetting, the main thing is DON’T LIE! Everybody has skeletons, they are more interested in mutual trust.

Respecting one's parents is a good thing to do, but if I'm correct, you stated in your first post that even if you moved out, your parents would completely strip the place you were moving into to check for any knife-related contraband? If you are in your 20s, that is definitely taking things way too far, and IMO you need some personal boundaries you set for yourself as an adult, especially if it won't be under their roof.

I'm certain that the gov't is collecting data on everything that everyone is searching online in a great big database, but unless particular wording raises any red flags, I highly doubt that knife collecting is even on the radar. It's not like they're monitoring YOU as an individual 24/7. So your parents are making you throw brand new knives into the trash. That's pretty extreme behavior. Unless something traumatic in their past experiences gave them an irrational fear of knives.
