These are so nice. I have been out of the Art for awhile and I'm getting back in. I was on a deployement and such and I'm being asked to make a knife as a military gift. This is exactly what I want to accomplish and have tried to do with refactory cement I got at ACE. I remember doing the wrap with wire, and it just didnt work out perfectly. Unfortunatly I feel like I have to re-learn everything so I am going through all my books and saying "Oh yea, I forgot about that". Bad thing is all the little stuff never made it through the move. I have my forge and KMG, but no drill bits, no files, you know, ALL that little stuff is gone. It sucks because it adds up. But I'm really happy I have a new home and can build my small work area the way I want it.

Thanks for posting these pics because this is such a great resource.
wow I thought Steve was back on?? :)

John you went way back to get this one back up again a bout a year and a half :D
hey I only had a min to check mail and saw this.. I'll get to your email tomorrow,, I hope.. or does this thread answer your questions? it has some good stuff in it.. or was it this thread you were talking about?

No, I'm still out of it, but that's OK with me. I've been enjoying looking at all the great work everyone is putting out, and I know I'll get back into it eventually, but it just doesn't fit what I'm doing with my life right now, so when it does, I'll start bugging everyone here again! :)

Steve I wanted to thank you, when I was researching early on about becoming a bladesmith, your tuorial here was one of the very first I ever saw, and it explained alot and spurred me onto keep pursuing more knowledge, thank you.

this place is lacking in the older guys some now ..
it's good to see you peaking in occasionally  that knife bug spark will light you up again some time :)

Well, I'm only 32, so I hardly qualify as old! I've been around, though! :D

I meant the guys that have been on the bfc for a long time.. :p
I know, you're still just a young pup :D
I could only wish to be 32 again, use it well Steve ... :)

Old guys?? What do you ever mean, Dan???
Craig
at 53 I'm just a young pup too, compared to some ole farts around here :D
now I just need to convince my bones of that ;)

thanks man, I had a united cutlery tanto fighter and I thought it was the best so I wanted to quench it like the best blades on the planet and when i tried it didnt work but i decided it was the fact that it was very high carbon (not sure what carbon count) but after this it worked marvelously.:D

Whoa old thread... 2005? To bad his websute isnt up anymore. I didnt get a chance to view this thread.

I don't know that model, but most all of the UC knives I've seen are 440 series steel and not suited to this style of heat treatment. In all honesty, your heat treat was probably "better" out of the box.

I don't make knives anymore, so it didn't make sense to pay the $$$ to keep a website for a couple tutorials, which is why I took it down and the pictures don't show up anymore.

Chiro,
I'd be happy to host the pictures on my site if you still have them. It'd just require you to send them to me over email (on my website) and then once I uploaded them, i could give you their new links and you could update the links in your post or I could just throw the new links into a post here.

btw.. I am sure everyone knows.. refractory cement can be had from the local brick supply. If you look for ones that sell flue liners and such.. they tend to sell buckets of refractory cement. I recently rebuilt my fireplace with a rumford.. and had to use it... it is like a gritty toothpaste.
