All packed up for my camping trip

Best of luck to you, looks like you have a great set up. I love using my NWA-forum knife but my Woodcraft still gets use. Can't wait to see your pics

nice set up.... have a great trip and do take lots of pics...:) i love AZ... my mom grew up in yuma...:D

What are you going to use to purify water? I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in 1997 and 2000 and back then we used Polar Pure. However, I found out recently from my dad that Polar Pure is not the purification method of choice now. Apparently the iodine taste bothered people, although I can't imagine anyone at Philmont complaining since hiking up and down mountains leaves you thirsty enough to drink anything. The chemical purification method of choice these days with my dad and former scout troop is Micropur.

Do you have a raincover for that ruck? It will prevent a lot of rainwater soaking in the fabric, and therefore keep your backpack at it's weight. Plus, if you walk for an extensive time in the rain, your pack will get soaked (trough zippers/seams etc). I would take a raincover for the pack.

All along the rim is beautiful country. Some of the largest amounts of panderosa pine anywhere in the country. Great elk hunting too.

If you go out on your own though beware, Marijuana Grows are increasingly common and dangerous in that area. Nothing too common, but keep your eyes open. If you see any signs leave immediately and call the police. Not trying to make you paranoid, just aware.

I am going on a 10 mile hike to Bear Canyon Lake on the Mogollon Rim here in AZ with my dog. I am going to camp on the lake and fish overnight. My fishing pole and camera are not in the pic, but everything else is there. I had to take my 2 person tent since I am taking my dog. It's most likely going to rain and don't want to stick him outside and have him get all muddy. I am taking my U.S. Marbles Woodsman and probably my DM. I am looking forward to it. All my gear weighs about 35 pounds minus camera and pole. It sould be under thirty without tackle and with my solo tent. This does not include water weight. I am taking about 2 gallons (another 16 pounds), but I will purify lake water once I get there.

Hi J33psru1e, i know Bear Canyon lake, i camped at the camping grounds one time, and used my boats to get me and my kids around the lake to see, what i can see. I do like the place, but i don't want to be in a camp ground around alot of people i don't know. two or three is ok, but 15 to 30 is no good for me, i did not know your from Phoenix Arizona, i have lived in phoenix most of my life. 44 years ago, phoenix was a great place for the out doors men, but as time go's on, its getting bad. Thay tell us what we can do with are lands, and tell us you can't camp in this place, no fires, and now in most places, no weapons. Arizona was not like this in th 60's, 70's and 80's, but now it is. The only way to have a good time away from this, is to do like your going to do, walk off in to the forest and try to stay away from others that want to take your fun away. I do know that Bear Canyon Lake has alot of bears, and if you need food, just hunt, i know with in one hour or less, you will have food to cook. Maybe if you like, some time we can hook-up for a survival camp out, im old but not to old, for a light back packing trip, and i like dogs, and the good part is most dogs like me. Good point, Fieldtestornothing. I was not thinking about this at the time i posted my first post, it's good of you to be looking out for your blade forum family. I all ways say to my family and good friends, be ready for any thing. Most of the time, its at night, of just around first light. I don't want to tell people to keep a weapon on hand, one you know you can hit a target with, and some thing light, so you will keep it with you at all times. But on the other hand, i don't want to think what may, or may not go one if he has no way to help him self. And im not saying in any way, at any time kill a person, just have a weapon to say, hay people stay away from me, i will fight back if i need to, or have a need to get out.
