All Things Sharp & Fiery...and Friends!

Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery how many gallons do or will you make in a season? My parents use to go to western NY every year to make maple syrup with my grandfather and family. When my grandfather died they still went up and my uncle and others would help. They would typically can around 50 to 60 gallons if I recall and once it got dark would put in drums and sell to someplace that would use it for maple flavoring. Growing up we used a lot of syrup. They would sell to friends and would typically give us kids what we wanted. I would typically use 3+ gallons a year. I helped alot doing this growing up. Lot of work but fun at the same time. I would gather firewood, sap or whatever so I didn't have to be around my grandfather in the sugar house. He was a mean man. Not physically but verbally. When my dad was there no problem as dad didn't put up with it. They had about 1500 trees in the bush that they use to tap years ago and made lots more. I remember them tapping about 500-700 trees I think. Been long time ago.

That sounds like quite the operation. We will be tapping between 15-30 trees this spring…so nowhere close to that amount.

Loving hearing some of your life story.

So the last week has been just pumping away on the sugar shack…got the main roof done last week.

Then got the posts and beam up for the “front porch”…IMG_5629.jpeg

I have one more day of plus weather before it dips below freezing continuously and we get snow every day for a week straight. The roof has been a big push.

I started today by stripping the front rafters…

Got them installed…

And even got the strapping on and shimmed. I’m so very grateful for that.

Happy Monday!!

Had a couple of busy days…Tuesday was finishing off the roof on the sugar shack, grading the front (after pick axing through the 4” of frost to get to the soft sand), levelled out the patio stones for the evaporator and started to clear out the “sugar run” trail.

Today was just finishing off the trail cleanup, property cleanup and a bonfire in the rain to get rid of some roots, branches and wood that was laying around.

Cleaned up and ready for the snow tonight. Supposed to snow for the next 4-5 days.

Hope your week is treating you all well.
