All Things Sharp & Fiery...and Friends!

YIKES  Not here. We are having a calm before the storm.

Going to below zero with snow forecasted starting Sunday then through Monday for sure. Could be intense and competitive Coleman :)

I could do with some cool breeze on a warm beach. Those chairs are so inviting.

I’m getting this instead…

Cool - get out the snow shoes. I miss this kind of winter weather.

But let's not be envious right? That warm beach is about 20° F (-6° in your world) without factoring in the 10mph off ocean breezes. You can see there is still snow down at the steps to the left. Which blew away all the rest of the snow. This is just a mile or so inland with no ocean breeze factor ~

Update on the Maple Syrup cookin’!

Got my sugar shack and chimney and boiler stove all set up! Tapped the trees early this week and they started dripping yesterday. It was a slow start to the season, but we are looking forward to seeing what progresses.I hope you enjoy the photos.

The sap is is nice and clear, so we are happy, happy, happy!

This is correct, J. SharpBits SharpBits

It was plus 6 yesterday. The trees need freezing temps at night and then plus temps during the day. Optimum is 20°F over night and 40°F during the day. This is when it really flows and we will have to empty the buckets twice daily.

When the temps go below freezing at night, the trees send their sap to the roots for protection. When the temps rise above freezing during the day, the tree sends that sap up to the branches.

So just for clarities sake.

We are a “Backyard Sap Boiler.”
This is our first year tapping trees and making maple syrup. We are learning as we go.
This year I got as feasibly close to how I would like my boiling setup…we will have to hope for more $$ next season to finish the setup.

I will update this thread daily 🤞🏼 with our progress. It has been fun and challenging with identifying the Sugar Maples and all of the research we did before hand.

We are learning…and that is the fun of it. 😁

I want to thank EVERYONE who purchase a S&F product the past few weeks or I would not have been able to purchase the needed parts to finish the chimney. I am so grateful to you all and to the Lord.

Now let me pose a question. Although we are not going to be selling Maple Syrup this year, we would like to name our “backyard operation.” I pose that you all can help us name it!

Also, any questions on our process or updates or info is welcome.

Happy sapping’ folks, spring is on it’s way!
