OP returned the knife and the company kept his money for a month? That's messed up. It should not take a month to process a return, even at the busiest times of the year. A return takes only moments:
Open package verify condition, return item to stock or send back to manufacturer of needed, open customer order in eCommerce back end or Credit Processor (eg authorize.net), and issue refund.
Literally should take moments, if you have money in the account.
