Almost no one cares if you're using a knife

I've taken a many knives out to cut all sorts of stuff in public without a hiccup since forever. Everything from a PM2 to a Powerlock.

Recently I loaned my mini Ritter to the clerk at my local Cigarette Outlet(gotta get my Swedish Snus fix) to cut open a roll of chew. I also have a bad habit of cutting all the fringed edges of my jeans or coats in public all the time(they bother the hell out of me).

Standing in line at the Pharmacy my wife was horrified to notice a long string hanging from the hem of her skirt.

She whispered to me "Can you cut that off with your knife"

I slowly removed the Spyderco Military from my pocket, thumbed it open, cut the string, calmly closed and pocketed it.

No one cared.

Now that is one cool hospital!!
Try that here in NJ......you’ll get a very different reaction!!
Went to the ER couple weeks ago and forgot I had my Advocate in my pocket.
When they admitted me and saw the knife they had security come in and put it in the ‘weapon’ safe till I left.
Ugh

Oh, if I had gone through the ER it definitely would have been a different story! Luckily, for a planned inpatient stay they're pretty relaxed. And they give you cream cheese in foil packets that are damned near impenetrable without some form of cutting tool, and I ain't eating no dry, plain, hospital bagels. ;)

Surroundings, actions, and knife being used make all the difference.

I think the biggest thing is actually using it for a suitable purpose.
Using a knife=it is a tool.
Standing around flicking a knife open and closed in public=you're a tool.

Saw a guy in Ottawa flicking his assisted opening knife open and closed, open and closed over and over again, while standing on the sidewalk of a busy street downtown.
It did not make him look cool.

We all have opinions about loaning our knives out, but just before Christmas I was buying some perfume for my wife and the lady behind the counter in the department store had to open up some box and was struggling.... I offered her use of my little Lion Steel Small Opera which cut that box right open. I warned her... it's sharp... ;) She used the knife and handed it back to me.

Definitely.
If I open my knife then cut something and put it away nobody will care.
If I use one of the tools on my Vic recruit nobody cares, but I have gotten a look or two before when I was using the blade to do this.

But it sure beats playing with himself in public.

How true!!
I remember, bout a year ago, some genius started a thread about how people in a Dr’s waiting room were horrified when he pulled out, think it was a Military, flicked it open and began cleaning his nails.
Couldn’t understand their reaction.
Really??? Here’s your sign fool.

Jersey... the state they'll arrest and prosecute you if law enforcement finds a 22 cartridge loose in your vehicle. I find them all the time in places I wouldn't expect.

I take my dad for hospital appointments all the time. Nobody cares about knives in your pocket..or in general around my area.
Now, go up North to the University of Cal at Berkeley campus..good luck. People live on a different planet up there.

That’s just dumb. Especially if he was doing it near the Market waiting for a bus.

Nobody gets freaked out in a steakhouse if someone is holding a bigass steak knife, so why should they if someone cuts a string or an apple in public? Answer? Because of idiots that pull out their badass mall ninja folder and flick it open with a thwack.

Besides, no one will be impressed that you spent $500 or $1000 on a knife.
Ain't that the sad truth, I told my brothers the prices of my Cold Steel knives, and they thought that was too much. I told them my high point for buying knives ($200) and they told me I was crazy! Well, the joke's on them because I purchased my first 100$+ knife! (They're probably right, but that's not the whole point of knife collecting)

JB, it is my most used knife and favorite Spydie......and looks it!! Carries perfectly, fits me perfectly and it slices like a pissed off demon!!
I made sure I would have no problem getting that sexy bitch back!!
It freaked me out a little when the nurse saw me take it out of my pocket and almost run out of the room to get security.

Brothers are like that. Mine are the same. They used to say the same things about my buying Colt revolvers. Now some of those $300 revolvers are worth $3000 or more. I can't say that about most knives however which is why I have always said spending money on knives is pouring money down a black hole. You do it because you want to. That said, my brother in law bought several knives made by Bill Moran when he was actively making knives and sold them later for thousands each.
