Alone Season 2

One would think the near constant rain would wash away the bear spray. And the flares were one-time use.

my guess is if you had deploy a flare or bear spray, they would restock you with those emergency devices, no different than replacing batteries in their sat phones. I'm 99.9% sure they have some contact with crew to replace batteries in their cameras and fix/replace cameras that aren't working, most likely a weekly or bi-weekly medical check up too

bear spray works, it's obvious the air horn is less than reliable

They alredy mentioned that the crew did a brief visit once a week to collect our footage, restock our batteries, and do a quick medical check. The visits were short and to the point. They didn't hang out and chat. I'm sure they would have replaced any of our safety gear if we used it. They took our safety very seriously.

Probably just the hand flares and air-horns. I'm unconvinced of the effectiveness of bangers in areas where there is hunting. It may not scare the bear, and may lead other animals in, thinking there is a free kill. Likewise the decontamination needed after using a bear spray would likely lead the safety teams to consider that an exit from the competition, as it defeats the point of the show, you'd have to get removed, then dropped back. If that was a possibility, then MK would likely have continued on after some care.

Interesting points that I hadn't considered. My experience with bangers was camping in a northern national park. As a side note. Bear spray was readily available in hardware stores etc. in a northern town that we lived in. Then the local street youth realized that they could use the spray to disable individuals in a robbery, bing, spray gone from stores by police request. A guy I worked with was chopped up a bit by a kid with a machete there also, but that's another story. I caught a few minutes of the gal with the axe cut hand, bummer, the wife and I figured that this was the end for her with a wound like that.

Not saying the spray doesn't work, its fantastic. The problem is that now everything smells like pepper and as the scent fades, it causes interest to the local wildlife. Also the horn is useful if you are in your shelter, rather than having to be toe to toe with the critter. Not sure either way, just trying to think of why they may have selected those items over others. Another factor is that to the best of my knowledge they are only dealing with black bears. Off the island, if they were dealing with Griz or Browns, that is a very different ball game, and other choices may have been made.

the pepper residue should quickly dissipate in that environment, after seeing the (un)effectiveness of the horn in Tracy's camp I wouldn't have much confidence

capiscum is proven effective with canids (including wolves), lions and bears- when it comes to large predators I'm taking no chances

I was surprised at how quickly and deeply MK went into shock.

I think the lack of food and possibly being already cold accelerated her shock symptoms. I wish she would have elevated her hand more. But she was clearly trying to stay calm in the face of a really bad injury.

Good points. And I suppose her low body mass might be a factor. Only a week there so, while they might be hungry, they aren't starving. I thought they were clothed to cope with the cold. I do wish we knew the temps they were coping with. Mostly above freezing? Elevation of a bleeding wound is to slow blood loss. While her wound was serious, it was not bleeding a lot. Of course again her body mass. And she may have also been dehydrated which would complicate things. Also, all my life I have noted how different people react differently to injury. Even other people's which they witness. Some are dead calm and react with logic and patience in assessment and treatment. Others go into panic mode, making illogical decisions.

Replaying the video where she cut her hand and then began treating it, I think many of us have practiced one-handed activities "just in case". Like opening the FAK bag zipper with a hand and teeth or pinning the bag to the ground with a foot or knee. But I imagine many things were racing through her mind at that point including the effects of shock.

Did they just repeat the snippet of her pushing the beacon, or did she repeatedly push it while waiting on evac?

Lest someone misunderstand, I am not knocking her. She showed a lot of moxie just being out there alone in those circumstances. I mean no disrespect by my critique of what went wrong and how it was dealt with and what we, people interested in the show and the topic, Wilderness Survival & Skills, might learn from each of these participants.

I for one still want to know more about the most effective methods of setting gill nets. Intrigueing and outside of my experience.

They do note the temps from time to time, they were generally hovering in the mid 40s during the day!

That could sure put a chill in a gal/guy over time with all that rain, as opposed to a dry environment. Environment disorientation, potential predator attacks, minimal food resources, various additional psychological stressors. I have more interest and respect for this show than many others of its genre.

Mtwarden, its not the environment, its clothing and your person that is the difficulty with pepper contamination. All I know is what I was told by guys who work in the rocky mountains with cougar and griz. So maybe I'm wrong.
I thought Tracy said it was a cub which explains its curiosity, even a mostly year old cub is a pretty dumb critter. Not likely habituated, but on occasion they can be, so maybe it associated the horn (car horn) with food? Not hard to have happen. Blackbears are not exactly known for their predatory cunning.

there is some concern with self contamination w/ any OC spray w/ the wrong wind, plenty of flushing water and a little time cures that (we have to get sprayed with the stuff before carrying it on duty ) I may be wrong, but if a contestant has that close of an encounter that you're deploying spray (it's going to be up close and personal) I would think that the production crew would make concessions as far as getting a new can of spray and even new clothing if necessary

if I have to choose what is the most effective deterrent for large predators, there is nothing that comes close to spray

Time to post this again.

Agenda based research and apples to oranges...Making comparisons where firearms are used vs bear spray is faulty in its premise. In Dr Smiths research he uses bear encounters where the bear was just being a nuisance and got sprayed vs most firearms encounters where people will not shoot a bear under similar circumstances. Most of the firearm encounters are hunters sneaking through the woods and are extremely close to the bear and the bear is actually charging.

Now....back to Alone!

I think it is great to have a participating member here! I really liked Randy's tenacity with the fire. Mike seems very confident, as does Jose. Im going to have to wait until todays show and guess my choice for a winner. Next to fall out? I think Larry but that is a tough call!
