Alright people I joined to ask this question, Help a girl out

I second Owens suggestion. Hideawayknife. I have one, it does exactly as designed by the WOMAN who invented it. It does not fall out of your hand in an assault - all others recommended can and will. You do not have to resheath it to dial a cell phone, use mace, etc as it leaves your fingertips free. It will fit wherever you want to carry, and it has a two inch single edge blade. Hard to define as a dirk or dagger, it's a glorified boxknife/pruner - which is a proven success in airline hijacking. Think 9/11. It's also used by embassy guards and other professionals who appreciate its real world qualities.
As for the self-defense, of course you should take the courses - because they will give the confidence that jerks need to see in your eyes and back off. Mace/pepper spray is nice if you actually get to respond to an escalating level of force scenario, but I suspect your worst nightmare is not going to be polite and follow a script. Like the guy at the bar, it'll be a Spiderman type scene with attackers already over the top. Your response is to slow or stop the attack ruthlessly and escape. Immediately dial 911 - the first caller is always the victim in police think - and don't forget to take a deep breath.
And save up for the Henry - they are beautiful.

already covered. hideawayknives are awesome, but no concealed fixed blade carry in california.

tirod3 thanks for the advice and I love the idea of that knife. I just don't get the knife laws in California. I'm pretty damn liberal but it just doesn't make sense. How is it ok for me to carry around a folder of almost any size but I can't have a 2 inch fixed blade???

Damn this thing is out of control. Well if another girl ever post about needing info on knives/self defense you can just point her to this thread =)

you can, it just has to be suspended from a belt in plain view. ca laws are among the most restrictive i know. without going into a political rant, lawmakers (liberal) have taken virtually every weapon away from ca civilians.
some laws make sense, some dont. but we are stuck with them until someone makes changes.

But you can have a 2" switchblade, IIRC. Go figure.

Texas allows 6" fixed blades. You could move.

I posted a request at another forum that hosts HAK about the possiblity of a folder and got a little chaff. Still, a waved "California" HAK would get around that. It'll probably come out about the time Busse builds their folder. (Not.)
So realistically, you have to look at the probability of getting it consficated, changing the law (or not being convicted,) or, at best, choosing something else.

Availability at need is a higher priority than style, and familiarity is right next to it. So, the choice is still up to you. Have fun with that, it seems harder than picking a spouse, but at least I can have more than one!

And you can still carry the HAK around the house. Like Red Green says, if you can't be handsome, you can at least be handy, and it is a great utility knife.

Hey Guys..

Mori...

Naaa Owen is a Good guy and trust his judgement...

I did go a little far,, especially posting as a professional. Maybe OK in the Cove or W&C, but not in general discussion..

No worries,, if ajri isn't offended and see the attempt at humor I'm ok with it...

yablanowitz...

I suspect that SD classes are teaching the way they teach is because they have no experience with Waved knives, most people have Never seen a Waved knife... Same would be said for the use and training of the Gunting.

ajri is now saying...

"WTF is a Gunting? "

Just more confusion in her young mind...:)

I can just about imagine the system Overload this young lady is having...

Time for a quiet sit down with a hot cup of Tea and an Ativan or two !! LOL

As far as the thread goes...

Yes it's taken on a life of it's own.. Theres some good info going on here.. Lots of things to think about,, and Alot of good and interesting points to be made by everyone...

yes, thats the only thing i hate about cali.
(gotta remember policy-makers arent knife ppl. so "pocket knife" is inherently differnt than "fixed blade" )

too bad you diddnt go outta state for college. i LOADED up on balis while at Ohio State.

IMO not that i advise carrying it, but a utility or custom HAK is a cool thing to have in your collection. if not only because another SD minded woman designed and created it.

agreed!!!:D

Hmm, I dont think that I like that kimber pepper spray launcher. It seems to me that it might be hard to hit an attacker in the face, with just 2 shots available. I think a continuous stream would make it easier to get the OC in the attackers face. Though the concept of the gun seems nice, 90 miles and hour? YOWZA.

Being ex-military, I know that big or small men can move alot faster than you think esp. when they are hopped up on something or driven by motives far deeper and stranger than anything you or I could fathom. They will take you down before you draw that little knife out of your pocket or mace from your key chain. . . .You could be wearing your treasured knife in your chest in nothing flat.

Uh . . . you make a valid point, although I disagree with the seemingly defeatist and anti-weapon tone of your post.

YES -- street attacks are frequently incredibly fast and vicious -- you need to be prepared to face something like this, both psychologically and physically. I AGREE that, many times, an attack happens so quickly and unexpectedly that there is no time to draw or deploy a weapon. HOWEVER, in the majority of incidents the victim was aware that something "wasn't right" about the situation prior to the attack. Use this intuition to your benefit and immediately distance yourself from the possible threat while discretely drawing your closed knife from your pocket and cupping it in your hand out of sight against your thigh -- if an attack occurs, knife is already in your hand ready to be opened. In many of the incidents that I've witnessed, weapons were dropped shortly after being drawn because of an insecure grip combined with adrenalized fumble fingers. If it's in your hand already, this is unlikely to occur. As stated in another post, the closed knife makes an excellent "less than lethal" weapon in itself.

That old anti-weapon argument, "Oh, if you pull a weapon the attacker will get mad, take it out of your weak little hands, and USE IT AGAINST YOU" is BS and won't fly here. An attacker CAN take your weapon if you drop it or freeze up out of overwhelming fear -- or, he could attempt to wrestle it away from you (but he'll likely get cut to shreds in the process). If you truly believe that your weapon will be taken away from you by an attacker, you're already halfway defeated. Be aware that it IS a remote possibility, and take steps to ensure it does not happen.

Again, I recommend the Spyderco Tansman -- and pick up a copy of "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker. And remember, a knife is primarily a TOOL, and you'll be finding yourself using it for a variety of tasks on a fairly regular basis!

Get used to the knife, make it an "extension of your arm". In a last ditch defence - stab decisive and fast. Then get away if possible.

Knives to consider: spyderco endura or delica, spyderco native, benchmade 806.

A small bright flashlight is also good to have, to blind an attacker for a couple of important seconds.

Take care.

I would also recomend the waved Spyderco, The Delicia was my first kinfe and I still own it, now if you are comfortable sharpening, a plain edge is a great way to go, but as far as self defence where you will do a lot of damage real quick I cant imagine anything more dangerous than a fully spyderedge blade, as long as you dont use it for everyday cutting tasks because it is really an expert re-sharpening job if it dulls. No apart from the knife and the pepperspray get yourself a Surefire E2D or better yet an L4 Lumamax flashlight they are a potent defensive weapon at night and dasily carried

Wow! You add the word "girl" to a thread title and get 135 replies in just 2 days! :D ;)

Hmmmm, and what do YOU think that says??? :p ;) I am just teasing. But, that IS an interesting point. I personally despise being referred to as a girl, as I am a woman. But, that is me.

Ohh and as this forum will understand. If I had ALOT more money I'd buy a William Henry folder. There actually in the display window of a art shop in my town. I drool everytime I walk by.

If the WH makes you drool don't bother looking at the custom stuff :D
