My dad told me a story one time about some young men in the flathead in the 60's who on a hunting trip one guy got a compound fracture leg. After a snow storm the van was now snowed in and they had no choice but to walk out and leave their friend with the van, a fire and a side of deer. They took the other side of deer and left to find help. It took them 23 days to walk out and get back with help, after circling and walking across there own tracks several times. Their friend had made 22 marks in the van for the days he had been waiting. The gangrene took him. I don't think I could have done better or even know what they should have done different except taken a compass with them. So I guess I'm really talking trauma kits that certainly wont fit an Altoids but will fit into a small molle pack. I went to an outdoor survival class and learned the importance of the medical stuff, but realized I wouldn't know how to use most of the trauma stuff if ever in the situation. I could fake my way through most of it with common sense, but could I really survive or help someone survive? So its top of my list. I know now that a booboo on my little toe probable isn't going to be life or death, but a compound fracture might be. Its nice to have the band-aids and other such stuff in my pack for comfort when I'm outdoors, but its not going to be the difference between life or death.
