"Always carry a pocket knife"

My God, that is scary. I give us about 30 years before that starts happening in the US.

Oh crap, it already does happen...:(

My fiancee and I where in a Starbucks recently when a couple of old girls sat next to us vainly attempting to open the wrapper on their muffins. One turned to me and flattering me with "you look strong, can you open these for us?"

Perhaps a good, sarcastic reply would have been, "Nope. I've been emasculated by stupid laws and even more stupid people like you who are frightened by their own shadow and probably want laws passed outlawing shadows!"

Sorry, that you should have to have put up with such garbage over such a tiny tool. Those kind of people make me as sick as they do scare me. Now if we could outlaw those people and that kind of thinking, THAT would be a good law!

Sign of the times I'm afraid, and something that will get worse as time goes by; the media are to blame for a lot of the scare stories and many people believe what the read.

I'd love to see the look on their faces if they see me at my wedding next year; kilt, sporran and.......dirk and sgian dubh;)
I was going to wear one of my swords (a wonderful basket-hilted broadsword from Armour Class), but my fiancee put her foot down and said a big NO!:grumpy:
But thinking about it in the cold light of day I think that maybe it was a little OTT!!

Lucky Lee, she was probably just jealous of all the goodies you would get to wear. Then again, maybe a little OTT. She might have started wondering if you were going to war instead of matrimony. ;)

My six year old drew his first blood sample last night on the business side of a clip blade. Didn't even flinch or shed a tear. Seemed a bit proud of it, like an initiation.

I'm one of the young ones you were reffering to and I love all traditional stuff. I like longbows and hate compound bows, my only hunting rifle is a Marlin 30-30, I LOVE old, classic cars, I only listen to classic rock and other music from that time period, I was just turned onto slippies and love them, and I love history. Have no fear, even some of us young guys are in to all things traditional :D. And as always, another great story jackknife.

Besides, how many people really want to read the meandering musings of an old fart?

You, and the enthusiastic participants here are the reason why I (mostly lurk) keep coming back to this particular subforum.
It's not just the knives, its the humble values they seem to perpetuate, no ones out to chop a tank in half, or crowbar their way to China.

It reminds me of being handed my first Slipjoint, and an Oilstone as a 5 year old by my Grandmother... and its the reason why my 5 year old has her own.

A book would be OK, but lets not let Jackknife get away from "OUR' forum.

He is one of the spokes of the wheel.

Everyone needs to learn and make an effort to become a knife trainer, of maybe lets call it a knife ambassador. Be aware of the good you can do by making contact with folks when traditional knife use is a point of human contact.

I can't tell you the number of times "my" Buck pocketknife has led to conversations about knives, granddads, hunting dogs, old guns, Boy Scouts and other childhood adventures.

Bucks, you've just put it so short and sweet what I sometimes take too long to say.

Knife ambassador. I love it!

Sometimes freedoms don't die all at once, but it may be the death of a thousand cuts. Instead of huge bite of a great white shark, it may be the bite of lots of little pirranas. End result is the same. Little things at first. Like the carrying of a pocket knife.

By being an ambassador of knives, we just may be able to keep our freedoms a little longer. Most of us have way more knives than we need, so why not have an extra knife on you that you won't mind giving away? The sudden spontanious gift of a knife at a very opportune moment may sway someone who was ambivelent on the cause, to our side. Someone who votes, and has a say. Someone who never may have thought of voting against a knife ban, but had been given a small little keychain size sak, and got used to having a sharp little knife on them. Thats one person swayed to our 'cause'.

Knife ambassador. Buck's, you're brilliant!:thumbup::thumbup:

Uh GlassJax,
There are a lot of great threads here. We have new people joining all the time. Leave the moding of this place to those who do it. Discouraging disrespect and encouraging legit participation is about all we care about here. It is out of place to discourage younger participants from bringing up things of interest to them and I do not understand why bringing up this thread is such a bad thing in your eyes. It is not.

I must say that my hat is off to seniordep2010 for resurrecting this one. I'm almost 30 and have always carried a traditional knife. My first knife was an Imperial Kamp King at age 7. Later, I "graduated" to an Old Timer 8OT. Jackknife's story about the man and his grandson was picture perfect to me and reminded me of my childhood days with my Papaw. It also makes me appreciate those times so much more now that I'm a dad. Tradition is what keeps us strong, keeps us who we are. My daughter is barely 2 now, but eventually my day will come and I'll be able to pass on the tradition to her. While in my heart I wish she'd never grow up, I also can't wait for the time to come when I can pass on a little of Our tradition.

Sorry Bastid. Didn't mean to discourage. I just thought the irony was worth pointing out.

That would be irony right? I get my literary terms all twisted up sometimes.

Jackknives stories and traditional knives have so much in common. They are both my "comfort foods", and make me feel good! Good to have this tale rotated like a slippie in an EDC line up. This one was, and still is a great read!:D

Theres still some left. My buddy and I, while we really like single blade modern folders, are getting interested in slip joints and traditional knives as well. We were looking at a couple Opinels today. I carry a Case Peanut regularly and he carry's a Buck Deuce. Im 20 and he's 19.

A good transition knife from modern locking blade knives to slippie would be a sodbuster jr. and an opinel, they are about the same size and blade shape. My Case sodbuster jr feels like a buck 112 but smaller, less heavy, and no lock but it still feels modern....ok it just feels good. :D
