Always Looking!! Storage for Collections!!

Charlie- what you want to look for are "Jewelry Chests". They look like this:

I find these are pretty inexpensive at estate sales or auctions, because most people don't use that much jewelry any more. And they usually have nice felt lined drawers.

If you have more stuff you want a map chest (sometimes called a printers chest). I've had a couple of these. They are more expensive, but I got one just for free off Craigslist, and then spent the summer refinishing it, so there's that. They can hold a fair number of knives.

The nice thing about stuff like this is it looks like good furniture and that helps eliminate some of the complaints that can arise.

I've tried many ways to keep my knives organized. Ideally I like to keep them stored, but easily accessible, so I can find what I am looking for, or enjoy CEing and CFing them, or maybe systematically wiping and oiling then!!
I find specimen drawers are perfect for all the things I wish to do, and I am always on the lookout for such things! I walked into a used furniture/estate findings store yesterday, and this little chest caught my eye!!
I don't know exactly what it was designed for so many years ago, but it is perfect for what I have always kept my eyes open for!!! Nine 1 5/8" deep drawers, and the bottom 10th drawer is 4 1/2" deep for oversized objects!! 12" square makes room for 20-30 knives each!! I think my search is over!!!View attachment 2489481View attachment 2489483
I spotted one very similar at an Antique Mall near us... it is a sheet music cabinet. I was going to buy it until my wife saw it was $400, she said "do you really need it?" After I thought about it I said... "No, not really, I can just buy a really nice knife instead for that price." 🤣

I don't have near the collection many here do. I might have 50 or 60 pocket knives total. But, I remember as a child playing with this Plano tackle box in my grandpa's basement. Looking at all the lures. Pulling the drawers in and out. Most of my fishing now is fly fishing for trout. So, when I came into possession of this old Plano tackle box I decided to put my knives in it! I use the bottom drawer for boxes and what not. I've run a bit out of room in that bottom drawer 😝 But, it's a decent way to keep things organized for smaller collectors, even though I would never use it for travel.

Very nice score on that sheet music chest.
I have a chest ( that doesn't really sound right to me ) along those lines but narrower that came from my grandmother, it would be perfect for knives but I don't currently have that many and am already using it for airgun parts.

I still have not found my ideal knife storage, but I don't even know what I actually want in knife storage.

I have my fixed blades in a 3 drawer night stand, my Bucks in one of those little glass front knickknack cabinets that hang on the wall, and all my other folders are in one of those divided up jewelry shadow box display things.
All 3 of these things were inexpensive goodwill finds and the little cabinet my Bucks are in is the only one I'm really happy with, but it will eventually be dedicated to just the folders.
I'd like to get something that will hold all my fixed blades and all my other folders, I don't know what that is yet but I'll probably know it when I see it.

Yes it is; my brother just informed me (he's a life long musician!)! He asked me to give it to him!!! 😯 I told him to dream on!!!😁

edited to add; it only cost me $186 USD ($250CDN) !!!!! ;)
That's a pretty good deal. I plan to go back to the Antique Mall to see if they will negotiate. Like you said, they are perfect for knife storage 👍

Wait...

Are you telling me you actually keep your knives organized and not just tossed together in a basket?

🤯
There are some sweet knives in that basket!!!
Most are in there own drawer in a chest of drawers with a couple of puck lights.

Wow, Steve. You a curating a fine collection. Like how organized that is.
Oh my, Glenn!!! Those are like treasure chests. I’m liking that. My wife would never give me that much closet space 😂.

Some fine examples here, but since I live alone there's no bitter nagging voices about "All that clutter and mess, another one??" so there's little incentive to get it stored properly :D Most places have some them adorning things, would LIKE to get it better sorted but finding nice cabinets not easy. When I was a kid I collected coins from around the world, nearby an old man was a kind of dealer/collector who sometimes allowed me to gape at his finer coins not for sale, he had a lot of really nice cabinetry for them, a gruff rather intimidating old thing but knowledgeable and honest. Now I'm that age, gruff, intimidating yes...hopefully other things too;)

Found this stackable sheet music storage option online. I’m not buying but thought it might be helpful.

Map cabinets are very similar. I almost considered this one as a coffee table would have just needed to put a glass top on it.

Has anyone also considered old apothecary storage cabinets? Some of those seem perfect as well, if you’re looking for furniture.

Personally I do like the pelican cases. I have a cabinet under our living room TV they fit in when I want to hide them away.
