Am I doing it wrong?

I have had so many Spyderco's over the years and the one I have never understood is the Manix 2. I have tried the LW models and even bought this awesome G10 version and it just doesn't work for me regardless of how many times I have tried to make it work. Everyone seems to love these things so I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Anyone else have this with the Manix, or any other model that people seem to love?

You’re not doing anything wrong, it’s just not for you! The few times in life I’ve tried something that was trendy, I was disappointed. That being said…I love the Manix 2 (and XL) and have many users. From what I recall, the knife was designed by Eric as a work blade, especially with gloves! That’s why it’s got such heavy jimping around the handle. Its ergos suit me perfectly!

Don't fret, it's just not for you. I had the same experience with a Manix 2 years ago: At first I thought it was the bees knees but fell out of love with it after carrying and using it for a few years. It's a great knife and I don't regret it, in fact it was my first "nice" Spyderco which reinvigorated by curiosity for the brand. I sold it off to fund another purchase and now happily use my Endura, Stretch, and Military models that fit my needs better.

Put it away and forget about it. You might get it out again in a few years and have a different perspective. That has happened to me several times with knives of various brands.

I sold some of them because I just didn’t enjoy them. Then years later I would buy the same model again. I ended up loving it and wishing I would have kept the one I already had.

This all the way!!👏
I have done this so many times thru the years!!😂😞

I had a similar experience with the Manix 2. I just don't like it. The LW is the worst, but the G10 version is only slightly better

However the Manix 2 XL is a whole different animal. I really like it. I find the ergos and the feel much more to my liking.

I've sold every Manix 2 that I've ever bought (about 6 of them) because I just couldn't vibe with it. But I have 2 XLs currently and I'll probably never get rid of my XL CruCarta

I had to lighten the lock spring on this one. It helped a lot.

How did you lighten the spring? I could see where that would help some.
I have to admit, I only have one and never carry it. But I bought it because it's 52100 and I like the color scheme.

That is pretty much the only reason I have this one, I like the neon green and 20CV

That is pretty much what I have done with this one. I think I have carried it once and then it went back into the drawer.
Cannot relate. The Manix family is one of my favorite models, primarily due to the lock being similar to the Axis lock in operation, which is one of my absolute favorites in use.
I honestly think this is a huge part of my issue, I am not that much of an axis / crossbar lock guy. For some reason the unlocking them feels so unnatural for me.

I exclusively carried a number of different Benchmade folders for many years in the later 00's, and the Axis quickly became my favorite lock of the time. Once you're used to it, it's really second nature one-handed opening and closing, while never putting your fingers in the blade path.

That's what is so weird for me. My first "nice" knife was a full size Benchmade Griptillian, it was early enough that it had the oval hole before they made it a round Spydie hole, and I carried it for years and thought it was the greatest thing ever. But then when I picked up my first back lock Spyderco, one of the early pinned Natives, and then a PM2 whenever I went back to the Grip it just felt "okay". I think the thing that saved me with the Grip was the springs were not that strong so it was easy to manipulate, whereas the Manix has such a strong spring. Makes me happy that we have so many choices when it comes to lock types, everyone gets to have their favorites lol

You started with the best (Griptillian 550), it's all downhill from there. :)

Taste change and evolve over time. As your experiences stack up and you move through the seasons of life, you will discover proclivities for some things over others, which will also ebb and flow. It's all part of the ride, just don't sell your toys, you will almost always come to regret it. Put the Manix away and revisit it later like Railsplitter Railsplitter suggested.

Try a manix xl. For this knife bigger is better, that extra cutting surface makes it just right. Add an aluminum or titanium cage and a medium tension spring and it feels premium.

Took it apart and cut two turns off the spring. They also make lighter springs, but what I did worked good enough for me. Beware though, it's not a super easy knife to reassemble.

The Manix is probably one of the lesser selling Spydercos, just going off pictures in like the daily carry thread. Maybe try a more popular one

It’s not just on BF where I’ve noticed people raving about the Manix. Between the other forums (USN, Spyderco) and the FB groups it seems like there is a ton of people that like it, which is what prompted my post. I was mostly curious if others felt the same way or had made changes to their Manix that made it better for them. As for the other Spyderco models thankfully I have a few others to choose from lol
