Am I the only one who doesn’t like Spyderco

Actually, a little civility will prevent problems before they even happen. Wouldn't that be nice?

It sure is. Don't tell other people what to think or do and you will get civility out of them. 9 times out of 10. I'm okay with your opinion and I'm okay with you cutting down my opinion. What I'm not okay with is you taking offense when I cut down your opinion. I think that should be pretty clear. You can say what you like about me and my opinions, and I'm not going to get offended by it because it's your right to do so. I will just make counterpoints, and no one needs to get butt hurt.

This got me to thinking, and I forgot, I do own a Spyderco. It's in my kitchen drawer. It's nice. Holes in blades, hoes and blades and kitchens, Spyderco.. okay I see where I was going mentally with this.

No wonder I forgot about it. I've never used it either. I think I ran it through the dishwasher about 15 years ago and put it in the drawer, there it's been sitting since.

Cool Blade and reason for it

Thanks, I really like it, even though I don't use it. I would really like a textured G10 or best a textured carbon fiber grip for it. I'm not a huge fan of the wood handle it came with, but it looks functional. It looks like you can back out the screws on the other side.

Seriously , some Spyderco models are very well designed and built for this purpose . 🥷
😂 All this time I thought Cold Steel was the mall ninja brand. I guess I need to turn in my membership card, then!
Cold Steel Mall Ninja , right here ...so above movie clip applies ! 👃*

* That's DeNiro's nose ...not what you were thinking !

I didn’t get it at first (20 years ago) because my experience with Spyderco was handling their lower production knives that were difficult to open and close and I thought the handle material felt cheap. Fast forward 20 years and found myself at SMKW handling the various models and realized I had incorrectly assumed all Spydercos were generally the same. They are not! I got a PM2 with great action and loved it but the hump was a little too much for me. I bought a GB2 because I’ve seen SO MANY people rave about it and honestly, I think it would be difficult to buy a better knife for $200… M4 steel, full length liners, extremely comfortable in the hand, super smooth action and the hump is less pronounced. I currently own 23 and absolutely love them all… some more than others of course.

Many if their bread & butter designs er, eh, for me, usually too tall of blade for seemjngly the sole reason to include the hole. That said, I do like certain knives like the Smock. I do think most knives they (and Benchmade) release w/ titanium (and usually just s30v) are way too pricey.

I Like spyderco but their warranty leaves much to be desired. They do not offer blade replacements at all, and don't really offer any parts other than screws even if you offer to pay for them.

That’s one reason I don’t have any right now.

Wore out a Spidiechef. Got a new one for $10 US in stamps. Not worried about how they run warranty.

I think spyderco builds knives around 3 things.

1. Functionality - their knives slice, resist corrosion, have a defined purpose/specialization. Doesn't seem to be much in the way of frills on their designs. Those frn handles may feel cheap, but good luck breaking them.
2. Blade steel - they're one of the only companies that use such a huge range of steels. They're innovative that way.
3. Heat treatment - they really push the boundaries to get all the performance out of their steels that they can.

Having said that, I'm not a huge fan. I don't like their marketing/sales model. However, I think benchmade should take some notes from them, especially on the 3 points above.

I just don't like holes in my blades.
LOL, I am sitting here with two Lum Tantos, one with a spydie hole and one with a "tophat", both of which open in exactly the same fashion, otherwise. Though I may be digressing from the primary issue of the maker itself, it's the hole that seems to be an issue with many. For me, I prefer the non-hole because for me, the hole uglies up the knife. Both are otherwise almost a match, including size.

EDIT: After giving this some thought afterward, I think I best just put together a new thread on the same topic of the hole itself, since without doing so would be a disregard for the maker-specific topic of this thread 20221103_233334.jpg20230304_204006.jpg

Even with the hole thats still a great looking knife.

I do agree that's probably a sticking point for a lot of people, for me it's very functional. As are leaf shaped blades.

As the title states. I have never owned or had the desire to buy a Spyderco. I’ve had friends who love them and I’ve handled them, but they are just not my cup of tea. Am I the only one with no love for them?

I felt the same way until I actually purchased one and played with it for a while. That was only 4 months ago and now I have 20+ Spyderco knives. They grow on you at an exponential rate. You can't beat Spyderco for the price and quality and they offer about every steel imaginable in their knives. It was the Spydie hole that threw me at first. Now I see it as the most efficient opening mechanism made. I started with a Paramilitary 2. I would advise the same.

I own 4 Glocks and no spyderco. I have handled several but they do absolute nothing for me. No hate just…well nothing I guess. They don’t exist in my world.
