Amsterdam Meet 2011 Report

Yes, I know it says LionSpy on the blade and it´s been referred to that way, but I´m sticking to what it said on the tag. Also, Spyderco is looking for a name for this folder, so if you have a suggestion – let them know. Anyway, this one is another massive folder. I´m not too keen on the tip, I prefer something more pointy. It looks very solid though, hard to break. I do like the techno look of the folder.

Cool. I'm looking forward to the Dialex. I really like the Navaja but I guessing it will probably be out of my price range. I kinda like the blade shape on the Spyleone. Spyderco has a lot of models with pointy tips so it's nice to see them offer a little variety. Unfortunately that one looks like it will be out of my price range too... I have to stop being so responsible with my spending :)

Thanks for all the photos Mr Blonde. Glad to see you continuing with your "annual reports".

So, the Tuff prototype is made by the same Taiwan shop that built the Gayle Bradley, now? And S30V instead of 3V?

You still haven't changed your avatar, you sound disappointed...
Looks like the Taiwanese maker got the TUFF. I think it will be just as well made as the GB if not better. Maybe the proto is only S30V, could be regular production is still 3V. Things can change from proto to final production, and often do.

Navaja is looking really good to me. the Tuff, well, i wanted to like it but...

I agree. That section of the blade that is milled out just does not look right to me. The handle looks really nice, the blade milling, the Spyderhole positioning, looks like a blend of the Khukri, Persian, and Navaja. :(
Give me a Lum Tanto or 3, and a couple Spyleones. ;)

I just need Mr. Blonde's permission to use one of his pics for my avatar... Anyway, I was intruiged with the idea of a 3v folder, but I'll forgive them for switching to stainless...tentatively. :)

This model is on a fast track to production. The concept model was only unveiled last year, and this year it’s a production prototype. It’s been my experience that most knives take about a year or two at least in the concept stage, before they become a production prototype. Dialex designed the knife to be the perfect knife for a new knife user. That explains the huge cutout in the handle, to provide a safe grip. I think a lot of knife users will appreciate that feature, not just newbies. The wide leaf shape blade looks like a nice slicer. This could be a nice camp folder.

I do believe it’s been about 7 years when I first saw the Tuff concept model, it looked promising but the concept model had always been fairly ‘rough’. This prototype looks pretty well finished to me.

I like the spiky scale with the Reeve Integral Lock, it’s grippy but didn’t seem too sharp. It didn’t seem likely to rip open my hand or anything. It’s big and massive. The fuller looks really cool, and I’m quite anxious to try it out, see how it cuts. The Tuff also makes me want to do overstrikes and spinewhacks; I’m curious just how tough this knife is. I have one major complaint though, the jimping on the spine and inside the choil is –to me- simply too smooth. It doesn’t match up with the grippy G10 scale and the spiked back plate. The knife screams ‘hard use’ folder, and it seems logical to me that you want it to stick to your hand. The jimping is an important interface with the hand. Why not make the jimping nice and deep, like on the Paramilitary 2 for example?

Three absolute must-get Spydercos. Sweet!!

Nothings really got me excited apart form the Tuff. I will be picking that one up with out a doubt.

The Dyad jr and and the Yo2 are likely to wind up in my pockets at some point though.. and I love that grind on the Najava.

I'm real disappointed to see the Ayoob still sporting a hollow grind and no serrations either. After all the lobbying to get this sprint happening I'm sad to say I'm going to to have to pass. :(

The Lum Tanto's a nice surprise though.

I hope the tuff stays exactly as it is, looks freaking awesome! That groove in the blade gives it a uniqueness that I find very attractive, I also like the way they did the titanium. I will be getting a Chaparral, Szabo Folder, Lum Tanto, Navajha, Tuff and Vollotton. Hopefully one a month. haha Love those Taichung blades!

Well, the Tuff is not what I expected...... not sure what to make of it. Kind of knife you have to hold in yr hand and use to understand fully I suspect.

The LionSpy looks awesome, just needs a pointier tip like Mr Blonde states and it could be an all time classic to rival the Millie.

For me, the winner remains the Yojimbo...... and the fluted Ti Millie.

Thanks for the pics!

Thanks for the pics, Wouter!

Really craving that Yo2.

Well, the Tuff is not what I expected......

It was originally stated that the Tuff would have a CPM-3V blade and an integral Compression Lock. And a Tuff with a Compression Lock (integral or nested) is the Tuff I want to own and use and the Tuff I'd consider tough. I can't wrap my mind around S30V or a framelock being considered tough enough for a folder named Tuff. With so many years passing between its announcement and execution, why do such stuff?

Mr. Blonde, thanks for the great pictures. I'm getting excited for a few of these models. Can't wait for some of them to become available!

Yeah, I was expecting a brute of a knife, something along the lines of the original Manix or Chinook but with a compression lock...

Maybe the name should be changed to the Bluff. :p
