Amsterdam Meet 2012 Report

I'm not liking that Tuff as much as the last proto. The other texturing was much nicer IMO, still want one though.

Thanks MrBlonde.

Thanks MrBlonde!

This has definitely convinced me that I need a Techno.

Crap, I was hoping that I wasn't going to buy any knives that weren't already on my radar. Spyderco is not good for the budget :D

The tuff is one of the most insane looking knives I have seen. I WILL have it!!!!!!!!! Spyderco is putting out the best knives ever. It's going to be a good year, as long as the wallet can support my habit.

Wow. I love the looks of the new Tuff proto even more than the last. The Starmate reminds me of the Gayle Bradley a little, in a good way of course. By the way Mr. Blonde, would I be able to use a pic for an avatar?

OMG! :eek:That Tuff is freaking Gorgeous!!! Wonder what the price tag is going to be on that one...
The place I preordered mine from has the Tuff at $260.00.

First of all, thank you Mr. Blonde for putting this thread together! There are several knives here that I am really interested in. The Laci Szabo is one of them. I love the blade on this one, and it is going to be a large folder, exactly what I like. The Starmate is another one I will be interested in seeing once it is available. I also like the fixed blades, though I'm more into folders. I want to like the Tuff, but I just cannot get into the ti handle on one side and G-10 on the other. This is why I haven't even considered the ZT's that a lot of people have gone bonkers over.

I only recently begin to look Spyderco's way, 2011, and begin to see some things that appealed to me and now for 2012, I'm seeing this again. Way to go Spyderco!!

I'm glad to see that some of my favorite models are coming from Taiwan. I will actually be able to afford them.

Must have is the Southard Flipper. Anyone know the estimated price?
Also really like the Techno, Szabo folder with the Golden Carbon fiber, and the Tuff.
Spyderco... you guys are TEARIN IT UP!!!!!

Yea, not digging the new texturing on the Tuff either. I saw the old version at Blade 2011. The new version just looks like golf ball dimples. All in all, still a very good looking knife.

Thanks for the kind words, but they really should go to Sal and Eric for allowing all of us to see the prototypes.

Spyderco 2012 Prototype – Fred Perrin Streetbowie

Apparently customers kept asking for the Streetbowie, because it’s making a comeback! This prototype seemed exactly the same knife that I have in my collection. The sheath wasn’t included in the passaround, so I didn’t photograph it, but I did spot it on the table with Sal and Eric. The new sheath design looks so much better than the old injection molded version. I hope they keep that design and I’ll get another Streetbowie.

WOW

The comeback of the streetbowie is the best news I heard for years!!!! :victorious::triumphant:

Please don't make it in VG10.
Nowadays VG10 can be called a good midrange steel like N690co

Please use an American steel for it: CPM 4V.

It has the same wear resistance of S30V but more than 3 times the toughness!!!

This knife deserves the best

Well, if you are going to change the steel, you may as well also change the handle to micarta or something. The current handle is unimpressing.

WOW! So many awesome blades! Stop with the Calys already, I DONT NEED anymore (but want them). Bummer the new starmate wont be made in USA but am very happy it isnt made in Taiwan.

I'm truly blown away with everything Spyderco has to offer this year. It's really a tough one but I think my favorite is the Ulize followed by the return of the Starmate and Lum Tanto.

A micarta handle could mean a full tang, which means the knife has to be redesigned and tooling equipment must be changed.
In other words it's like making a new model.
Changing steel would be less demanding. (maybe just logistics like they do for most of the Taiwan made knives)

The current handle is good, very lightweight with enough grip.

Micarta might add to the price

MSRP streetbowie : $ 64.95
MSRP streetbeat : $ 269.95

or

Temperance I : $ 39.95
Temperance II : $ 339.95

Taiwan wouldn't make it any cheaper
MSRP bushcraft $ 299.95 ( and O1 doesn't add to the price imho)

Edit
I guess the Hossoms made in Italy in N690CO where a steal.

While micarta adds to the price, it wouldn't add as much as you suggest. No sure where you got those MSRP prices from, more like $130 for the Street Bowie and $120 for the Temperance. That was also nearly ten years ago, and the price of every model still in the lineup has increased by 30% or more since then. And, in addition to the upgraded scale material, I'm sure the full tang construction also ups the price of the Temp 2 and Street Beat.

Chances of seeing a non-Japanese steel on any model made there are very low. The Japanese take offense at being asked to use foreign steel.

Weird, there has certainly never been a temperance to msrp for $40, pretty certain it was $130 10 years ago which means street price would of been $75-100. The First Perrin was around that price as well until spyderco put them (all black version) on close out and undercut all there dealers by offering it at $50 on there website, same with the Lum Fixed Tanto, msrp over $200/Delaer cost $100 (street cost $120-50) and spyderco had them on close out for $75  Ill never forget some of them deals.

While your discussing costs, the Dollar has been steadily weakening against the Yen and the Euro.
