Amsterdam Meet 2012 Report

Most certainly Sir, I wouldnt expect to get 2002 prices in 2012. Keep up all the good work Mr Glesser, looking good

Eric Glesser goes over some of the details of the Ed Schempp designed Tuff prototype. It was filmed at the IWA show in Nuremberg Germany which explains the background noise and lighting.

CPM3V? That's cool but I'd prefer it DLC coated then. It'll end up as ugly and stained as my Gayle Bradley if left with a satin finish. :foot: I'm still really excited about it though.

It's 3.75". I prefer uncoated though. A little tuff cloth and it'll be good to go, at least where I live.

Looks good. I am waiting eagerly.

WOW

The comeback of the streetbowie is the best news I heard for years!!!! :victorious::triumphant:

Please don't make it in VG10.
Nowadays VG10 can be called a good midrange steel like N690co

Please use an American steel for it: CPM 4V.

It has the same wear resistance of S30V but more than 3 times the toughness!!!

This knife deserves the best

i dont think ive ever heard of cpm 4v but n960co would be a nice choice.

I'd love to see it in 4v, but since it's Japan made, it's not going to be in any American steel.

I'd take it in any steel if it were full tang.

what tang does the street bowie have

Notched stick tang, about 1/3 to 1/2 the handle length if I remember right. With the FRN injection molded around it, it isn't going anywhere unless you spend a lot of time beating it with a hammer.

...aaaaand while we're at it, I preordered the Szabo...:D

Anyone seen any preorder open for the Nilakka or the Southard? Personally I haven't seen those two anywhere yet...

Hooray! 3V in a production knife! Everyone get ready to break out the Tuf-Glide!

Also.
Sigh, I wish people would stop saying that a fuller (or drilling holes in anything) "increases strength". You get a better strength to weight ratio, but strength overall goes down.
I start to lose faith in humanity when I hear about people drilling holes in things to make them stronger.

Okay, cool. Was just curious. Trust me, I'm not one of those guys who doesn't think it's a "hard use" knife unless it's a full tang knife with the edge geometry of a 2x4 :)

The handle on the street bowie is great (for a lightweight user knife), but as I mentioned before, I have one of the originals (paid around $70 at the time, and that was certainly a lot below MRSP), so I won't buy a new one unless something is changed.

If the tuff has a 3.75" blade, that means cutting edge will be no more than around 3". I hope in future spyderco will put out a similarly robust design with a 4" cutting edge. I will sit this one out, but am happy to see a production folder in 3v. I don't think folks will need to be too religious with the tuf-cloth - I have a bunch of fixed blades in 3v and it is not very high maintenance.

For me, the unmissables in this round up are the techno and the flipper. But for those who don't have a street bowie, I'd certainly recommend it as a light weight and probably much cheaper alternative to the southfork.

Thanks for all the great pictures!

I'm relieved that I don't like the damascus Caly 3 though. Or rather, my wallet is. I've spent too much already these past few months. I was expecting something "finer".

I have the Meerkat on pre-order. I hope the colour looks more like in the promo pictures (burgundy).

I like the looks of the Chaparral. The flipper also looks interesting (a bit big perhaps).

Sal Glesser explains the backstory and features of the upcoming Spyderco Nilakka folding knife at the IWA show in Germany. He also talks about the G-10 backplate some consider too thin from the pictures I posted.
