Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes

Mamba = awesome . I just hope they do the plunge lines correctly. The blade is unsharpened near the choil.

I'm loving the Ion, it could maybe replace my Caly - that would really be something if that happened. Would like to see less "point" on the butt and possibly slightly more curve to the spine to nestle into my palm well, but can't wait to see the final production version.

Like the Firefly, the Mike Draper folder has also suffered some setbacks in production. Hopefully it will come out soon this year. This prototype seemed very similar to the first one, which was shown last year. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the handle design, with the web graphic and blue accents. It is a good representation of the makers’ custom pieces which is important to Spyderco’s choices in custom collaborations. If you like the stainless steel Police models but not the ergos and weight; I think this is the knife for you. The Mike Draper is a very light folder for its size and the handle is completely chamfered for an ergonomic grip.

The Myrtle was a nice big folder with a good custom ‘feel’ to it. The blade may seem a bit unusual, but it’s actually designed for the type of practical utility chores most people use a knife for; opening packages and cutting food. When I held the knife, it was very easy to imagine that the Myrtle would be a very practical design. I really liked the classic custom design with a bolster and the five screws in the handle that lined up nicely. The custom clip design is very different from the regular Spyderco hourglass clip, but in my handling of the Myrtle it seemed very comfortable to grip.

I'm liking the Myrtle, I can see where that would be a very handy blade. Reminds me of leaf blades.

The Nirvana features a one piece titanium handle. The graphic lines continue all the way around the sculpted handle. The Nirvana felt a bit blade heavy, but the handle was very easy to the touch in all grips. The blade grinds looked very striking and the Nirvana certainly looked and felt like a classy folder you’d want to put to (hard) work.

Wow! Really digging the Nirvana, was just watching a video on YouTube on Peter Rassenti's knives at the East Coast Custom Knife show. Also, is that S90V I see?

The polished titanium Pingo apparently came about due to forum feedback for a more high-end version of the regular production version. The titanium makes the Pingo significantly heavier, by comparison. But is sure is a nicely finished piece. The edges of the handle are all chamfered to an almost mirror finish. The little plastic piece you see under the clip is used to prevent scratches on the titanium, for those of us who’d like to switch the clip for left-handed carry. The graphic is a nice touch, and I’m curious how durable it is during EDC. And by the way, this Pingo comes with an Elmax blade!

Thanks again, Wouter. The Myrtle looks great; very unusual blade shape. I didn't realize it would be so large until I saw the in-hand pic.

I like the Mamba as well . The prototype looks like it's made of expensive materials, I hope the actual production model will be simpler. The design is fantastic so I hope Spyderco keeps the purchase price within the range of the average customer who doesn't need to dazzle others with how expensive his knife looks.
