I don't see it as shameful, nor would I be ashamed to own a knife with those lines. I don't believe they look ignorant either. It's a nice tribute to the "dry lakebed" etching done on the true customs... but I kind of like this look a tiny bit better than the squiggly lines. Helps set it apart from the dozens of other plain Ti frame lock folders already flooding the market.![]()
Then you're not looking hard enough.Whatever! I'm not seeing desperate admiration for the Sebenza.
I don't have a problem with the Nirvana's handle design. After all, designing custom handles is where Peter got started. I just think it's terrific that he's formed a collaboration with Spyderco. He's definitely one of the good guys! But then Sal's always had a knack for spotting talent.I'm aware that Rassenti uses those types of patterns on his custom knives. I suppose I can appreciate the painstaking work that goes into hand-carving the pattern on the custom knives. But the lines on that particular pre-production prototype seem to be random and don't really suit the design. The lines seem to be there for visual 'pop' and nothing more.
Contrast that with the unique-graphic Sebenzas for example, where the lines are in patterns that by themselves make logical sense, and on their own represent a separate work of art on the canvas that is the titanium scale. Not saying that that type of graphic would look good on the Nirvana, it would probably look very awkward considering the contouring of the Nirvana versus the flat slab sides of the Sebenza. But the unique-graphic Sebenzas use patterns that takes advantage of the design elements of the Sebenza, whereas that doesn't seem to be happening with this Nirvana.

Alas, this really isn't the place to discuss the Sebenza. Of course, you're the one who brought it up.
Do drop by the Chris Reeve forum when you have time and we can take it up there if you like.![]()
I was clearly referring to comments in this thread. Not everyone likes or pines over the Sebenza. Most don't say they don't like it either. Because fanboys attack them for their opinion.
Thank you for proving that even here in the Spyderco forum Sebenzanites believe we all just have Chris Reeve envy.
I will be happy to buy anything other than a CRK. Because it will have more style.
Hi Dulleddown,
More profit is usually associated with higher price. That's normal. Profit is usually a percentage of sales price. To think that a high priced auto should garner the same profit as a low priced auto is not in accord with business. It might be the same percentage, but being more expensive, it will be more profit.
Unless you are a manufacturer, familiar with close tolerance manufacturing of heat treated steel & Titanium parts, you are not likely to be able to see all of the differences between one of Chris' knives and others. For example; CRK keeps 0.0005 tolerance on surface grinding. That's one sixth the thickness of a hair. Do you have the knowledge and equipment to discover that tolerance?
In the end, it's all about trust. CRK took many years to build and maintain their reputation. Built with consistent focus. Even those trying to make a "cheaper" version must "leave out processes" or "soften their tolerance", or they will cost as much.
Rarely do you pay for the "name". That's a bullshit sales pitch made up by the ignorant claiming to offer the same for less. Money valuation between countries might offer a "deal" for a while until the money value balances, but all in all, you will get what you pay for.

Just because you can't see the difference doesn't mean it isn't there, it just means you can't see it.
