An Apology, among other things

There are a lot of videos of guns showing destruction and mayhem of all kinds of inanimate objects and even some kinds of fruit. Why then are these videos not denigrated as trash or junk or what have you? I submit that it is because guns are weapons and nothing else. What makes videos of knives showing their potential use as weapons so much worse?

I've kind of wondered the same thing.

I realy like knives, many different kinds of knives, with many different uses, by many different makers. I joined these forums expecting to find others who enjoyed talking about and admiring knives. So imagine my surprise when I get on here only to find so many people who seem to only post hate.

I mean I've never heard so much about what knives can't or shouldn't do. If you go by what some people say you can never, ever use any knife for chopping, stabbing, throwing, emergency digging/prying, and god forbid you should ever even think about using any blade for self defense!

Oh well, anyway I actually like watching the CS videos. LT does look a bit silly in those spandex shorts, but I still find any knife demo vids to be interesting and entertaining. And if it works to get more people interested in knives then I think that's a good thing.:)

-And I too love my Larado Bowie, and would love to get my hands on that Nachez!

I apologize for enjoying Cold Steel's poor marketing :D

If it were poor marketing, Cold Steel wouldn't be one of the most successful company's in the industry. I find all kinds of ads that I think are terrible. Sometimes I even change channel on the TV when I see one. What I've learned over the years is that the ads weren't likely targeted at me but at someone else. This is probably true of Cold Steel's advertising in your case. Don't let it bother you. Hating the advertising isn't a reason to hate the company or the product. It just says you aren't the target market for the advertising. Someone else is.

The purpose of marketing is not to impress every viewer with its aesthetic elegance. Its purpose is to sell product. Cold Steel sells a lot of knives. That's good marketing, whether each of you care to respect it or not.

Why Cold Steel "don't get no respect" isn't particularly relevant. What is relevant is that we expect people in the General Knife Discussion to treat each other with respect, and avoid trolling and insults.

Two things:
1.The TiLite is not a toy. I think it has a single-minded purpose and i'm sure it would fulfill that purpose quite well.
2. Most people can't or won't think for themselves when it comes to selecting a product and instead go with the often repeated suggestions. CS is victim to this bandwagon nonsense.

The videos are what they are and they should be taken with a grain of salt and a sense of humor. I've always wondered what the do withg the left over sides of beef, do they have a barbecue? Might explain why LT looks so well-fed. Lighten up people, they're just knives.

does anybody know for a fact whether the the videos are true and realistic? i'm not pro cold steel or against, i just want to know because i've got a recon 1 and it was hammered into a steel drum in one of their videos. if that's a realistic capability then i wouldn't be afraid to stab in an SD scenario which i am very leery of right now from all the doomsayers about the strength of a folder.

The "doomsayers" are right in that a folder will rarely be as strong as a fixed blade, but I'm pretty sure that Cold Steel's Recon 1 will stand up to the task. The lock is one of the strongest in the business for one.

I offer alot of CS knives on my site and I get emails from people asking my opinion on CS over another brand and/or knife and very often I will recommend another knife from another brand and it's even cheaper in price and they still choose to buy the CS knife. I don't really dislike them and even through the years I had a few but found better quality and even cheaper in price knives that I prefer.

For whatever reason people just like them, not sure why but they just do. maybe it's the advertising and marketing, not sure but people really like the CS knives.

so that means that the videos are getting through to the target demographics.

I don't know how else you would analyze it. Or at least you would have to say that the overall marketing program has contributed to the company's success rather than hurting it. Also understand that the members of this forum are a tiny part of the knife buying public - enthusiastic to be sure but still tiny. What works for this group may not work for the population as a whole.

Why does anyone really care about some fat dude slammimg a knife down through a car hood, or, slicing up a raw chicken with a katana? It's obviously hyped-up marketing overkill. Just amuse yourselves with it and move on. I know women aren't going to throw themselves at me because I'm wearing some absurdly packaged and advertised cologne or deodorant, but I don't get all jacked up about it either. It's all going to come down to the knives(or at least it should anyway) in the end. If you like what you see, you'll buy, if not, you probably wont. I've seen the videos, and yes, I think they're ridiculous. But so what? So many things are asinine these days. Just cut through the BS and be done with it.

ok,, I have sat back and read the comments about CS,,yeah they make wild videos,,some almost unbelievable,,,but I do admit that I like watching them,,why?,,no idea, other than I find them entertaining, can knives really do the things I see,,lol,,I wonder at times,,but to me it really does not matter,I have several knives ,,more than some, less than a whole lots more, certainly not near as many expensive as most here seem to have,,I jsut cannot justify spending the kind of money on a knife that I can do hte same things with a less expensive knife,,I like the CS products I have seen,,held,,I only have one CS knife,,I really like it, it was very inexpensive,,very sharp, very sturdy,,I am happy with it,,did the videos have anything to do with it,,not at all, I have never seen a video showing it, even if I had seen one I would nt have based my decision about buying it based on the video,,I like BM, Kershaw, Rat, etc,,I like most all name brand knives, some styles more than others,,I jsut do not understand all the crap about CS,,they are a large company,,apparently what they are doing is working,,if you do not like it,,do not watch them,,why berate a fellow knife lover over what they like,,we are a select group here,,unpopular to the politically correct at the very least,,why create derision among our ranks, we should stand together at all times,,just because I like this brand or that brand means nothing,,my love of knives should be enough to be a valued part of this group as should each and every knife lover here,,enough said,,have a great day everyone

first let me say that I'm not for CS or against it.
my question is: can their knives do what they show on their videos? or is that just some kind of special effects? BC is their knives can do those things they'll be good enough for me and i won't be trying to save money to buy a strider or a sebenza. this question is not about the fat dudes in the videos but about whether their knives can do what they show or not. simple question really.

Count me as another one who doesn't quite understand why people get so upset over the CS marketing videos. I mean sure a big guy in spandex short shorts is kinda funny, but what is so wrong with showing off your products in an entertaining manner?

As far as I can tell they are not using special effects or anything, just showing how well their blades slice, stab, and chop, how well they keep an edge, how far they will flex before breaking, and how much overall abuse they can take.

As for chopping up sides of beef and stuff... isn't that a fairly acurate way to test a blade against real flesh and bone? I mean how often do we get a chance to do that our selves?

And the people who wonder "why would anyone want to stab a knife through a car door?" are kind of missing the point, I don't think CS is expecting anyone to use their knives to cut cars in half with, it's just a simple demonstration of durabillity and edge retension.

-and their knives realy are pretty good, so I guess I just don't see what all the fuss is about.

The American Lawman is the most solid folding knife I have ever owned. I am a huge fan of the fixed blades from this company as well as others. It is unfortunate that even productive discussion of these is so highly discouraged.

I've got more CS blades than I care to admit.:o
My EDC is a Brave heart, one of the most elegantly simple pieces of cutlery I own, and the best pocket dagger (single edged) I've got.

My favorite is the cheap and insanely choppy double edged front weighted machete they sell. It just feels right and makes a first class brush clearing tool with that big ass plate of sharp steel out at the point.

The tanto folder is nice. I got it for free.

The pair of 1917 Cutlasses do their job of decorating my sailboat's forward bulkhead quite nicely. And I"ve got one of the thick coated blade bowie knives (CRT or some such name) from the PX up in Baghdad. It works.

They all work. They're a bit overpriced for everything but the machetes AFAIC.

I even have a couple of the plastic knives. Not sure why I got em but they were cheap so wtf.

And yeah. They have some seriously goofy videos. I kind of like the part in the one that got posted where he cuts the ham in half though. That's pretty cool.:o

The videos are what they are and they should be taken with a grain of salt and a sense of humor. I've always wondered what the do withg the left over sides of beef, do they have a barbecue? Might explain why LT looks so well-fed. Lighten up people, they're just knives.

Just wanna clear up one thing--you might have meant in jest but others would take it seriously. CS's youtube account states that all meat used are properly packaged and donated to a local charity.

the more you know ~~*

As for the vids, they sell knives and they are damned good at selling knives. CS could care less about what each one of us thinks of their demos, just as how Mick Strider could care less about what we think of his military background and how Ken Onion could care less about what I think of his last name. :p

Singularity:

The demos are genuine. Otherwise they'd have been called out long ago, given the number of people who would just be delighted at their failure. The fact that out of all the people who attack CS, the last thing they target are the knives, I think is a good indicator of their quality. I have no doubt that you could hammer a Recon 1 into a drum - although, of course, I should say that CS could be "bending" the tests a little...you know, maybe use a slightly rusted drum or something, who knows. :p

kudos to you hobo several times i've posted & stirred up a firestrom. as per usual i state my position tell the guys i'm not trying to win a popularity contest & go on . anyway feel free to say what you wish as long as its not vulgar. most forum kats are intelligent & cosmopolitan enough to live & let live . sure we have some people as thick as a brick but this is america & it takes all of us to make up the pot. anyway i've said some radical stuff but for the most part the guys are pretty fair.

This totally sounds like something I could get in on. Can you link the thread or video?
