An Apology, among other things

People here love ESEE knives so much that I'm afraid one day or another they are going to start a worshipping cult. You people are starting to convince me to get one but I simply don't like their designs.

That doesn't mean I won't buy a rat though. In fact I'm already saving for a rc4! I don't see too many people ranting about ESEE's company ethos or image although I may have missed them.

All said and done it's the knife itself that's important and even more so, those that have actual experience with one.

This really can't be overstated; in the end, it's the product that comes to speak for itself, if it can.
I think Cold Steel's knives can, or most of them anyways. I still see little reason for the existence of the Ti-Lite, but that's just me.
And I still own one (my third) regardless.

This is the way with most products, maybe. You seldom see commercials for BMWs, or Swiss Watches, because their quality is a given. The rest of us will just have to pander until we reach the same brass ring as they have. Maybe the Solid Proof Videos exist solely for the makers of those knives to share their enjoyment of their products.

That's the funniest comment I've read all week.
Thanks for the good laugh.

Cheers! I think we need to keep the conversation as light as possible lest we get sucked into the morass of heated debate once again.

I need to remind myself of this sometimes too.

Not sure what your really wanting out of your post.

I assume you want our true feeling about CS.
I dislike the marketing
I dislike the knives

I had a SRK and Master Hunter, and the thing I disliked most were the rubber handles, and the coating.
I've never had one of the higher end CS's, and I'm sure they are much nicer, but the marketing/owner will prevent me from ever buying another.

As far back as I can remember, Cold Steel knives were head-turners for me. Their original tanto design was a knife I lusted after many, many years ago. I can honestly say, long before the internet, CS did a good job with marketing in magazines and with cutlery stores (in catalogs).

I have two or three of their DVD's (given to me by an independent knife dealer), and they are amusing. I don't think any more or less of them as a company due to the video. From a marketing standpoint, they're genius. DVD's are dirt cheap to duplicate, so CS could give these out like candy on Halloween for very little investment. The return in the way of sales probably speaks for itself.

In the end, it's a video, amusing at best. Who's going to feel the need to attack the hood of a car, or slice through hanging rope with a single swipe? Probably nobody, but if some punk in a souped-up Dodge Neon feels the need to harass you with his angry little car, you can rest easy knowing you can carve your name in his hood if he gets too close to you!

While you may dislike the video or the company, they get high grades for marketing & sales. And they produce some very nice knives, also.

The point, I think, is not an attack on a car. If, however, your knife is capable of that, then how much more on flesh and bone. It is the refusal of people to accept that CS knives are primarily weapons and that they are targeted to people who have a taste for bladed weapons, that blinds them to what some other people want and find in these videos. A lot of knife people want the rest to think of a knife as a tool and not as a weapon.

I like CS knives, I hate the videos.
I have a Ti-Lite, it's a nice knife, it holds a good edge, it's very comfortable to use, and it's well made.
What more do you need?

That's cool. It's entirely reasonable to dislike a knife because of the materials used, or because of how they're sold, or even because of who sells them.

That's what I wanted out of this thread; disagreement leading to respectful debate. When a person is issued a postulate, the choice is always to respond either thoughtfully or dismissively; with an open mind or with a wave of their hand. This is true regardless of the postulate in question.
I think most of the people in this thread have been responding thoughtfully.
Thanks again for that.
I also hope that you respond to my disagreement in the same way that I respond to yours; with understanding. That goes a long ways towards helping us learn, and also towards keeping things friendly :)

What more do you need?

I need a knife that less resembles a classical Italian switchblade :p
Up here in Canada, knives of that sort will only get you into trouble, and also scare people. I know I'm not accountable for the feelings of others, but that's still something I like to avoid.

That's actually one of the reasons I bought it.
It has nice lines, and it brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it snap open.

Everyone is, however, entitled to their opinion, and can spend their money on anything they like.

I, for example, don't like the sebenza. I've had one, it just doesn't do anything for me.

On some forums, that opinion is tantamount to heresy.

There is a quote that suits this matter, I forget who it is from, it goes like this;
A man's opinion is like his dog, I should be allowed to admire it without being required to take it home with me.

I don't care if other people hate the knives, I don't like all of them myself, but the ones I do like, I'll buy.
After all, It's my money.

Apologize for what?
You weren't the troll!
They should apologize to YOU for getting your thread locked!
