An issue with 'Dual Survival'

Hey,

What did you expect? Survival is survival for the most part. Climates can change some things around, but you will pretty much do the same thing for a lot of the routine chores.

It is way more realistic than the other shows that are really not survival, but just entertainment. When you are in a survival situation, you want to make it as routine as possible to keep yourself out of trouble.

This is still by far the best survival show.

I have seen all the episodes and so far I am really disappointed. I had high hopes for this show when I found out that Cody Lundin was going to be a part of it. I have followed Cody for many years now and hate the way he is being portrayed. 90% of the show is a remake of what Bear & Les have done and the other 10% is about Cody not wearing shoes. I do find parts of it entertaining though and will continue watching.

The show isn't meant to act as the all knowing survival guide if the world ends. It's just TV and I like it because it deals with a topic/way-of-life that I enjoy. I'll take it over frickin American Idol any day. Not everyone is the outdoorsy type and it (like the myriad of other shows) might serve to get some people interested in the outdoors that might not otherwise be exposed to it. Like some of the other folks said...no reason to be a hater. If you don't like it don't watch it. Frankly, I'd love to be in Cody and Dave's shoes (or lack thereof) and make money doing something I love. If it comes on and you don't want to watch it, then change the channel or go in your backyard and work on your own skills. Another thing to consider is that we haven't seen too many shows yet and we don't know what the episodes will have in the future.

Whit the low Budget, is becoming Survival vs Camping
I really don't see the point where a guy can eat lot of shit, can really teach someone else something new!
Spaghetti Western or Western Spaghetti as you put it...they don't teach nothing new!

Funny, I don't see the show as making Dave Canterbury look good. He's doing stupid stuff on a weekly basis while Cody says things like "I'd never tolerate that from one of my students". He just looks more Grylli Vanilli. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy, but he's doing the same stupid stuff that Grylli did.

You guys don't believe Dave really gets game every time he walks into the woods with a stick or a slingshot do you? Or less than an hour after he set his first trap within earshot (and smelling distance) of his camp? Fancy having a nice clean pig walking through the woods at just the right time.

I think Discovery is making both of them look bad. I know for a fact that either could make fire with a bow in most of the situations which they have showed.

Oh well. I like their little skill cutout things. Wish they'd do it two or three times in the show and make it more detailed.

I was just looking at Cody's site. He should learn a little about knives before stating a Mora Clipper has a full tang and then charging $27 for it.

I should stop, I really do like Cody and all I am doing is giving him a hard time and the fact is I would love to go to his school....I'd give him a Skookum :D

Seems that in this era, where survival instructors born and grow up like mushrooms.
Dave logic e adaptation are better than whiskey mariuana Cody.
I see Cody as smoke more than logic. Cody adaptation are eat any easy shit...& if you can do the same, you're even better.

Drinking unpurified water, traveling by raft, over waterfalls and rapids, setting up traps without cordage (but wait he did have cordage all the sudden) and catching a suspiciously clean pig in a matter of minutes....

The Grylli Vanilli meter is pegged.

Too bad. It had so much potential. Back to my Ron Hood Woodsmaster videos.

Grylli Vanilli...hahaha.  Dude, that statement right there made my whole day. I'm still laughing about it.

I still wonder what dayhiker only takes a roll of condoms, camera and a pack of smokes without a lighter or matches no less. But heck its entertainment and what else have I got to do on a Friday night? I also like seeing a mora in action. Being a winter camping type I think the super shelter from the first show looked down right cozy. Not sure why so much time and energy is spent on traps/hunting when the foraging seems rather well done but liked watching Dave make those traps last Friday as once again its entertainment.

Fair enough Sufler. Nothing personal, but I'm really tired of all the bashing of Cody and Dave. IMHO, I think they are doing a great job.
Scott

 +1.

Its just tv. I dont know anyone who would gather all of their survival info from a tv. If a newb to the bush watches this and it sparks an interest to seek out knowlage, then it cant be a bad thing.

I laugh at some of the stuff they do on the show, but I was laughing watching the Tour de France the other day too...

One of the nice aspects of having two guys in the 'survival' situation, is having Dave and Cody debate the merits and hazards of their actions and decisions. This provides a partial Socratic element to the show that could be a very effective teaching method. I don't see this as a competitive show, i.e. which expert is the better survivor, but rather a way to bring multiple perspective to the show. I'd like to see the show expand on this concept a bit more.

I watched the first episode, then 20 min of second episode and i totally dropped the third. Like others have stated it got abit repetitve and the show didnt manage to captivate me.

If i want realistic (realistic as it can get) survival ill watch Survivorman. If i want entertaintment ill tune in to Man Vs. Wild. Those are the only 2 survival shows that i watch.

I enjoy the dual survival show....yes it has some spot that could be better at times but I still enjoy the show overall . just like survivor man I hate the going back after the camera's from les.. he could of edit that crap out. man vs wild is just a show outdoors for entertainment only.Dual survivor is a mix of both to a small degree ,kinda like the odd couple outdoors. I really enjoy Cody sense of humor at times... and Dave go get 'em attitude works & plays of each other well. I think you forget this is a discovery show production and within a hour /less they try to cram alot into there time frame and try to get it to flow...Overall my Family Enjoy it and we sit down as a family and watch the pair whittle away at each other a share their point of view of survival .

I like a few on here am having issues with Cody's portrayal. Yes he doesn't wear shoes, yes I think that is a somewhat risky move given the different terrain they find themselves in from week to week. I do think that given the choice I would choose him to be the guy I had to survive with. A far more relaxed and practical attitude and his methods of food gathering are for me more practical in delivering food at low energy expense.

I think they have edited or asked Dave to ramp up the over the top alpha male attitude to make the show more dynamic. Sometimes it just comes across as if he's the survival guy for Team America or something. Almost as repetitive as the 'Cody isn't wearing shoes' is the 'Bush Hippy, home maker' lines. The concentration on meat seems baffling to me. I like steak as much as the next man but if i'm surviving then it's a case of getting to help not trying to find the nearest thing to steak to eat.

Like most of these shows I just take it with a pinch of salt and watch it while i'm having a beer and something to eat. There's some good info and it beats watching most garbage on the box these days.

(I'm interested to try find what this show with a man living off the coast of Scotland was. Having just returned from a weekend on an island off the west coast here I'd love to see how he coped in a survival situation.)

I enjoy the show, and find myself often siding with Cody - I see people here trashing him for his minimalist approach, but he seems to be the much calmer, less risk taking member of the duo, whereas Dave is always big on the hyped-up action adventure "make it look good for TV" crap. While Dave is drinking the nasty water and saying they should navigate rapids in a sketchy raft, Cody's comment on the situation is simple... "I hope I don't die."

I also think our community is WAY, WAY, WAY too quick to criticize. It's cool to be part of the "in crowd" that can pooh pooh the way other people do things, because you like to act like you know better than the average person, but I will tell you right now....

In a survival situation, I'd rather be with Dave OR Cody before anyone posting in this thread.

I'd also rather be with ANYONE posting in this thread than Bear Grylls. :D :D :D

Good thoughts, and they pretty much match my own. The focus on meat definitely baffles me, but I completely agree that it's part of playing up the Team America (perfect description) portrayal of Dave.

The stuff I find more interesting is how often they show focused sunlight fires, and how readily they talk about how freaking hard it is to make friction fires. I also like that they've failed at firemaking on occasion, because that's an often harsh reality that people don't like to face, and a reminder that it's a REALLY GOOD IDEA to have multiple ways to make fire.

I like how they go out of their way to suggest that certain things are too dangerous, just to drive that idea into peoples' heads to not take risks. For example, in the last episode they came up to a waterfall area and talked about how it was too risky to climb down. I'm actually pretty sure it was an EXTREMELY easy downclimb, and not terribly far either, but they wanted to make the point that climbing down crap can be dangerous. Same thing with the rapids - even though they did shoot some rapids in the raft, it was with Cody constantly saying how much he hates the idea. Dave's gung-ho attitude is balanced pretty well by Cody's careful, calculating pace, and it gives you opportunities to think, instead of being presented as "this man is an expert and knows everything" and then people go out and try the same stupid crap.
