And Another One Bites the Dust

Please come back? Please?

Last I heard, nobody has bitten the dust. Never liked Cody L. Always liked Dave C. I tolerate Teti. There is only so much survival stuff you can put on TV that will draw much of an audience.

I guess then its probably not the best thing that Teti's knife is featured in one of the very recent/current knife publications.

I am kind of following this thread with interest. Teti, while a 'bit over the top' for me, did bring certain aspects to the show...when he hung himself over that ice crevasse to retrieve that pack in one episode, he had bigger stones than me under the circumstances.

While having the background is important, it takes a lot more to fulfill the role in front of a camera...being a 'quiet professional' not beneficial to TV...it takes a unique blend of skillset as well as on-camera persona to make it work. Just as I am sure there are some very talented backup singers out there more capable than the headliner, if they aren't the complete 'package,' (meaning generally have visual appeal and/or can dance)...well, they're going to remain in the background making the 'celebrity' up front sound good.

You would think after there last face-palm with Dave they would certainly would have vetted the nixt guy much more thoroughly. But Teti seems to have numerous photos of him with certain groups and locals that indicate that he did go places and do things. Now did he 'pad' his resume...I dunno. It wouldn't be the first time.. It also wouldn't be the first time an honest man was torn down by the media and/or haters.

On some levels...these kind of things remind me of Adm. Boorda's Suicide in '96 over 'dispute/scandal' of the wearing of one of his (many) ribbons...Unfortunately, in today's world, the smear comes first, and the facts and/or vindication later...sometimes...if you're lucky. Unfortunately, the undertones usually linger forever.

When he did that all I could think of was

"Climb the hell up and reset the anchors you stupid drama junkie! You're gonna get some of your audience killed one day when they try to replicate you. Get your compromised ass up, move the rope over the the right side and try again. Swinging around with nothing but Cody's feet standing on your lifeline is pretty high up on the dumbest things I've seen on the show."

Me thinks that there was A LOT more going on off-camera there...that situation isn't one like 'he's gonna drop 20' feet to an embankment and break a leg...' That was more like gone forever into a frozen abyss...I don't think any safety crew in their right mind would allow that to go too far...that and I don't think Teti was to warm and fuzzy with the idea of going back down once he came out...

Back to Teti...one would think it would be a fairly simple review of something like his DD214 and a some phone calls to know if he was somewhat legit or not. We're not talking some minor discrepancies here...and if they were that big, how come it took so long for this stuff to go public...if they were that big of a deal, one would think after the first episode or two, people would have been raising some flags...

I get that, but would you rather hang over the abyss once with dodgy anchors? Or get the hell out of that situation and try again with properly set anchors and failsafes, not to mention moving the rope to the same side the bag was on so you don't have to do any stupid swinging on an already compromised anchor.

What they did was probably 100% television produced decisions for the drama. I see no reason at all why they could not get out of a bad situation, take a breather, and try again with a clear head.
Drama is more exiting for television; that's precisely why Grylls got more viewers than the other shows and why Stroud is on the opposite end of that spectrum. I have an uncle that preferrs watching Grylls over Stroud precisely because he thought Survivorman was boring; that's just how tv works.

I have no idea if this is about "minor discrepancies" or not. The claim that service was in a unit so secret that it cannot be identified has a famaliar ring to it.
Discovery Channel’s “Dual Survival” reality star Joseph Teti, a former Army and Marine Corps special operator, has been disavowed by the Special Forces Association and stripped of his membership with the group.

“He is no longer a member and cannot rejoin,” retired Army Col. Jack Tobin, president of the association, told Military Times.

The association’s National Board made the decision after some two dozen current and former Special Forces soldiers came forward with allegations of misconduct against Teti. In the group’s 50-year history, only 10 members have gotten the boot.

Although Tobin declined to discuss the specifics of Teti’s removal, the group’s bylaws allow for membership to be revoked for lying about their Special Forces credentials or any “actions, deeds, or behavior by a member which brings discredit, humiliation, or embarrassment upon the Association.”

Teti and Discovery Channel did not respond to several requests for comment.

Teti, however, was clearly proud of his membership with the group. Until recently, it was the first entry listed under “professional affiliations” in the biography section of his personal website.

Teti has been at the center of a growing storm over his military and combat duty claims since joining Dual Survival last year. He replaced David Canterbury, another Army veteran on the popular survival show, after allegations surfaced that Canterbury lied about sniper and airborne qualifications.

Teti has faced far more controversy, however, including allegations that he misrepresents himself as a “combat veteran” despite never serving in combat while in the military.

In an April interview with Military Times, Teti defended his claims to combat experience, saying he served as a contractor in a highly classified special operations unit.

Teti said he served in Force Recon as a Marine and later served as an enlisted Green Beret in the Army National Guard, leaving military service shortly after the 9/11 attacks to pursue work as a private contractor.

“Never have I said that I served in the military in Iraq or Afghanistan,” he said at the time. “I want to clear the record right now. I was in a government counterterrorism unit doing direct action missions right alongside Tier 1 assets.”

He insisted the government unit in which he served was so secret that he was barred from even discussing it. “Don’t even guess about it because that will get you in big trouble. Don’t even take liberties at guessing because you’re actually crossing a legal line right there. ... I am not at liberty to discuss — ethically, legally, morally — who I worked for,” he said.

Special Forces Association members are applauding the move to take Teti off the group’s rolls.

“He’s an embarrassment to the Regiment, because of the falsehoods, lies and embellishments he’s used in association with his Special Forces qualifications,” says retired Army Sgt. Maj. George Davenport, a “life member” of the organization.

Among Teti’s lies, says Davenport, are claims that he was a graduate of the Special Forces Combat Diver and Special Forces Sniper courses.

“I personally checked with the Special Forces schools and he did not go to those courses. There is no record of him attending,” says Davenport, founder of the “Special Forces Poser Patrol” Facebook page, which added Teti to the group’s “Wall of Shame” Sept. 30 in the wake of the SFA’s decision.

Who the hell really cares if he did or not anyways? At least it's not some science fiction show, or crap television cartoon like most of the stuff on TV these days. It is informative demonstrations of applicable techniques for survival and bushcraft. Since OLN got watered down, there really is not much that is better in that department.

Feel similar, although I enjoyed Fat Guys in the Woods more.

Who cares? Perhaps the persons mentioned above. But you really mean that you do not care, right?

If you rely on the opinion of an "expert," you are also relying on the thrustworthiness of that expert. If an "Expert" is willing to lie about his experience to buttress his credibility, might he lie about other things? You may not, in fact, be informed but rather lied to. For years there was a particular "expert" on Autism, Bruno Bettelheim. His books were quoted as THE authority. Turned out his "research" was imagined - lies. His supposed degree in psychology was actually in art history. He had taken a total of three classes in psychology.

None of this relates to the general entertainment, or specific comedy, value of the program. Perhaps Joe and Da' Bear could do a show together. "Surviving with the Stars."

I'm surprised this wave has lasted as long as it did. I never would have guessed "Survivor" would still be around, what, 15 years later?

Les, Dave, Bear, Cody, Creek, Dodge etc should just be glad they cashed in while they could. Along with pretty much anything to do with Alaska or rednecks, I daresay the genre has long since reached its peak. At this point it's only going to get goofier until it fades away all together.

There are plenty of cats who can make it in the woods (or on a small farm for that matter)... and most of them are neither spaced-out hippies or high-speed/low-drag "operators"; but honestly they're much too boring for TV. The focus on wacky personalities and made-up drama is just to get viewers talking about them - and boy howdy, does it work ;)

Even being any good at bushcraft/survival is no longer really a requirement to be on TV. There have now been at least two short series' about people wandering around the hills stealing ginseng off public lands, a couple about goofballs hunting monsters, one actually halfway-decent one about a couple hillbillies cobbling stuff together... the list goes on. The main thing they all have in common is a heaping helping of half-truths, ridiculous myths and mistake after dumb mistake from people who clearly do not have a clue.

But as long as enough people watch, advertisers will advertise, and producers will keep cranking these shows out like soap operas. Could be worse... at least it's not "America's Got Karaoke" or "Dancing with the Celebrity Chefs". :D

Veterans. Lot's of them. Especially SF veterans.
