Ask and Ye shall!

Here they are before I started. He had scratched them up sharpening them, plus they had some rust forming, were still dull, and just generally needed some spa treatment. He wanted to go with an aged, well used, and patina'd look on these blades. The Wasp Waist Gladius (I'm not a sword expert) is "battle ready" and made of 5160, The Pugio dagger I think is made of 1055 it honestly to me looks like a reworked blade blank. Anyways there was a considerable price difference between the two if that gives you any idea.
Best full shot I could get on my work bench...

Just snapped these a second ago, but I buffed both blades out through some compounds to a close mirror and to eliminate some of the blemishes. Also buffed the fittings to a close mirror. Applied a bunch of layers of patina using various methods, hand rubbed to highlight the high spots, edge, and to give the patina a "polished look." Then I force fed the wooden handles and sheaths some bees wax and my homemade bees wax cream to make them more resilient. I am not all the way done yet but getting close. You can see the "bands" of temper in these pictures.

Interesting temper lines huh? The only thing I can think of is that they are there to make the blade act kinda like a "spring" if that makes sense. I just think its neat LOL.

W - what's the elevation rise from the road to the back of the property? You said that there was a slope up the back.

ETA: Have you got a USGS topo map of the area yet?

I don't have a topo map. I'm not sure the degree of slant. It slants drastically behind the cabin, but that's just where a bulldozer took part of the hill out, to have a spot for the cabin/yard. Then it slopes up less, and sort of flattens out towards the top. Just looking up the hill, it looks pretty rocky too.

Kind of funny, when I was talking to the realtor, he said it was pretty much a small layer of soil on top of solid rock where the cabin is, and that it wouldn't perk. I thought that was kind of funny, considering there's a septic tank in place. I thought to myself, what the hell did they do, blast the rock out for a septic tank? When the former owners came, and I was talking to the guy, he said you could easily have a well drilled there. Rock isn't easily drilled, about a half inch per hour, so it seems likely it's not solid rock. I dumped out a 5 gallon container of water we didn't use. I was expecting to see a nice, long trail of water when I dumped it. It went about 3 feet, and all sank into the ground, haha.

Methinks someone just types slow. :D

WorldWood is not coming up in the topographic map search. I was getting curious......SNARK

Well, if it were my 2+ acres, I would put my cabin smack dab in the center. But then, I am known to be a right unfriendly, curmudgeonly type of guy. I can tell you are tickled to death to have that cabin. I would be too. Looks like good times in your future.

Damn, an hour went by on a new snark thread with nobody posting???? Slackers.

EDIT: Haha, Ray and I posted at the same time. Snark on!

I would as well.... But that means you have to clear more land to create a road to get back there... Still thats what id do... But the people that had the cabin before him probably wanted quick easy access to the road.

Also a box is headed your way :D

I kind of thought the same thing. There's a cabin down the lane from me a bit. I guess the former owners of the cabin I got knew the people, and then bought the land next door. It definitely would have been cheaper to have part of the hill removed at the bottom though, as opposed to having to clear all the trees for a road, and remove hillside further on up. I do want to walk up, and see if I can see the river anywhere up there. Thought it would be cool to build a deck up there somewhere, if I could. Good times for sure, except when I can't be there, haha.
