Buddy, thanks for the thumbs up, but can't take credit for this, its a joint effort, and the charity idea came from elsewhere, on top of that most of the work is being done by others.

Cheers,

Stephen

Has the price of the tickets and how many there are going to be been decided yet?

Keith, the team is working on all the details now. The good thing is the makers are very excited, and motivated. So the making of the Bowie is going very well. We are very fortunate to have these guys working with us.

Where are the preview pictures?!?!?!? I was a bit anxious that my bar o steel was not up to snuff...lol

Joe, I have rough ground the 5160 blade, and will grind the W2 tonight. Should have an update after heat treating this weekend.
Dan

Hi Stephen,No Worries-I gave thumbs up to the makers of the knife too,and to Everyone else involved. But it was your computer animation of the knife in the first place that started the Snowball rolling down the hill.I Like ALL the makers involved-J.Fisk forging it,Dan Farr Grinding Heat treating,& Finishing the blade.Russ Andrews for the Guard & Handle,& Burt Foster for the Sheath,A VERY Talented Crew For Sure, and the Knife will reflect it.Actually I thought D.Farr & R.Andrews were already Mastersmiths,as their knives I've seen look like MS Quality.I've owned knives from Fisk & Foster(Still own 1 of Burt's).I am currently working on a deal to acquire a Small Bowie made by Dan Farr, and evenually I'll get one made by Russ Andrews.I'm a Firm Believer in giving credit where it's due,and have done so.
Thanks Guys,
Buddy:cool:

Keeping my fingers crossed. i forged a 12 inch bowie blade from that W2 and even with all my best efforts to screw it up, it looks like it is going to be a foot long straight razor, albeit an imperfect and not very pretty one...lol. I can only imagine what you guys wil be able to do if we don't have problems with the delamination issue that Jerry was concerned about. Little warning on the heat treat. As you may know, this stuff gets as hard as woodpecker lips even in oil. I ended up having to quench the blades that I have made 3 times with the last being at 475 to keep the edge from chipping out.

A few quick pics to show you the progress:

First, blades forged closely to shape by Jerry and following a quick clean-up by Dan:

It was left to Dan to select the better of the two, which we see here rough ground:

And further along after a "quick hand sand" to show some of the activity in the blade:

If a maker's mark like this doesn't get your pulse going, you probably don't have one:

So which one ended up "better"? W2 or 5160? They both look pretty darn OK to me:D

Judging by the vividness of the hardening line, I'm guessing that the W-2 blade was the one chosen?

I think it would be cool to have the names in the order of the stages as the knife gets handed over for working: Fisk-Farr-Andrews-Foster. But it really doesn't matter.

Order of names are good old alphabetical ... no order of preference, no order of importance.

Stephen

FWIW, there are THREE ABS Master Smiths named Foster. I think that first initials would be in order.

P

and in honor of the chosen charity, how bout the names circled around a stylized nip............ummmmm, nevermind:D

That blade looks great. Shouldn't the MS smiths names be on the top? Just a thought.

The creation of the BF Bowie from the membership’s design continues at a steady pace.
The makers are completing their contributions soon after arrival of material in spite of their busy schedules.

The BF Bowie team would like to have time to consult the membership on all remaining design elements and tweaks to design, however we realize the need to keep up momentum as our goal is to have the Bowie completed including photography as far in advance of the Blade Show as possible. Having said this, there may be minor elements or decisions that all members won’t agree on, however the nine member team votes and/or have input on every decision. By this collective effort, we feel the overall process and completed Bowie will be something that the entire BF membership will be proud of. Please continue posting your opinions regarding progress photos and information updates; however realize that in many cases we will be too far along to make adjustments or changes.

We will be posting progress reports, information on how to possibly become the proud owner of this great Bowie, and charity/contribution information as it becomes available.
