Another Buck Spa/Warranty thread

I just got a 110 back the other day, they replaced the blade and I also purchased a new sheath. The knife had belonged to my late dad and the work was perfect.

I had put this off for several years because I don't trust the mail.

Buck did me right for a great price and I'm glad they offer this service.

Ben.

Unlike a standard 110 replacing the blade on a 111 Classic can be much more difficult. Since we can not sand the head of the pivot pin to remove it without removing the scroll work it has to be cut between the blade and bolster. This stress can cause the aluminum to crack or break. Since we do not have any remaining handles it would leave the knife in pieces. We normally would offer you a discount on a replacement knife or a replacement of our choosing. Was this offered to you?
Sorry I missed this. No, they didn't.

I have had 2 110's done and they replaced an old 121 with a 115 that had a chip out of the blade - one thing i can say is when you get them back the action is exceptional. Just my opinion

Thank You Pete
I sent in a 2-dot 112 a couple years back. You're not kidding about the action. It felt (and looked) like I had a custom knife. It's all tarnished because I keep taking it camping, but it's a fantastic knife in hand.

Tracking shows that my 111 will arrive at Buck sometime today. I'm really curious to see if it's beyond help. Tony got a lot of use out of that knife.

I saw this on the auction site and immediately thought that Tony might have owned a 525 also, but the font on the engraving is different.

Nice find! Maybe our Tony's are cousins. My Tony has some pretty nice engraving for his name, but absolutely trashed his knife. Your Tony looks like he put some effort into engraving his name on his own, and took care of the knife in his pocket. Looks like he worked at a crane equipment shop.

This is one of the rare occasions when I don't like seeing a "heavily used" knife. I think it's a shame what happened to the handles of that 111.

I guess at the end of the day it's just a knife, but it was a really nice looking knife.

Were these hand engraved or done by machine?

EDIT: Found the answer myself. The 111's aren't engraved at all, they're stamped. I figured hand engraving would be too expensive.

Yeah, that was pretty bad. Heavy use is one thing, abuse is another. I like seeing a knife that's been used regularly but taken care of so it can be used again. This knife seemed to be abused as if it was just disposable.

What a great knife! This dropped out of my mailbox Saturday night, but I haven't had much time for photographs these last couple of days. Marathon training is heating up!

It looks like Buck buffed out most of the dings along the edges, and this was one of the cleanest knives I've ever gotten. A little oil in the pivot, but no gunk to clean out.

I love that it still has some character from Tony's days, but feels like a completely new knife. Thank you Buck Knives Inc. Buck Knives Inc. !!!

The story gets a little weird, though, and I'd appreciate the insight of all the 110/112 experts here. When I first got the knife, the blade was real wobbly in the locked position. Furthermore, if I held the knife upside down, the blade would drop out a bit (see photo below). I loved the look of the knife, but was a little worried about putting it in my pocket. I figured that Tony had damaged it too much for Buck to get a solid lock up. Then, after a couple days of playing with it, I took it outside to take these photos. When I closed the knife to put it back in my pocket, it had an extra loud snap. Like a really stiff slipjoint closing shut. Not sure what happened, but there are no more blade wobbles and I can't shake it open anymore. It's just as solid as any of my other 110's or 112's. Perfect!

Thanks for your assistance. I sent it back and I believe they successfully replaced the blade. Unfortunately the USPS mis-delivered the package and it never made it back to me. Argh. That package also had a 317 and two 110s that had been included in the shipment for spa service.

Well that sucks! Do they know where the package is, and can they get it to you, or is it gone?

I sent off a 110 today (UPS) to Buck for a cleaning, etc. Is this a "spa" treatment ?
My father gave me this 110 in 1973 while home on leave, after my first tour to SE Asia. I served on two destroyers and made a WestPac on each. Many guys in the fleet carried a 110 on their belt everyday.
Well, I pulled it off the shelf recently, all tarnished and needing some proper care, but knew it should go back into Buck, so it has.
Didn't mean to ramble so much..
Regards, Vic

Yes. The cleaning is part of the sharpen, polish, and adjust (SPA) service that Buck offers for $6.95. It is a heck of a deal when you consider that return shipping is included for $6.95.
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve always said that they basically provide the service for free considering that they pay to send it back to the customer.

Did you happen to write anything additional on the outside of the package? This way I can take a look at it first.

Yes.
I printed out the form, filled it out and put it in the box as directed.
It was addressed to BKI, xyz, Idaho Falls, ID
