Okay. Here are the rules (they are pretty simple):

Get outside and build yourself a wilderness shelter using ONLY your Rat Cutlery RC-6. This could be quick one night shelter or a more permanent structure. It's completely up to you.

In the spirit of improvisation and creativity you may use items or materials found in or around your site but don't use anything brought from home except your RC-6.

Take lots of pics! Since no one can really be there to 'test' out your shelter photos and descriptions of both the process and the finished product will help the judges decide on a winner. It will also help those of us (myself included) with less bushcraft experience learn more about the steps we should take to shelter ourselves from the sun/wind/cold/rain/heat should the need arise.

This contest will run from today until midnight on Sunday June 14. All entries must be in before midnight on Sunday.

TexasTony and Shotgunner will be the judges.

Now for the prize:

The winner will receive this custom leather sheath from Andy of Andy's Leather House (sheath only guys, sorry). I had him make it for my RC-6 as part of a trade but it hasn't been used once. I like to carry my RC-6 in my pack. When I asked him, Andy valued this at at least $100. The sheath is both beefy and beautiful just like the knife it was designed for and fits the RC-6 very securely. It's got a detachable drop loop and a loop stitched to the back for use a tie down or to attach other accessories/pouches/etc.

I think that about covers it. Let me know if I forgot anything. :D

 Beautiful Sheath , Great idea for a contest and way to add to RAT forum by offering such a sweet contest prize. (I don't own a RC-6 so I will just drop in occasionally to drool at the pics)

I'm in! I've been wanting to get out and build a shelter for a while now. I found this one while hiking one day. I know someone spent some time here too. There were tell tale signs all around. This thing might be close to a year old and still standing.

Yea, this is a seriously awesome prize guys.

Anyone with an RC-6 is nuts to not put something together for this.

If I had an RC-6, I'm fairly certain I could have a small home constructed by the time this contest is over, given my current lack of a job or anything else to do.

It rained all weekend at my house. I pussed out.
It is supposed to rain all weekend again this weekend. I might have to take a vacation day to get this one in. :)

Thanks for makin this a sticky, Tony.

Johnspark, we've been getting an insane amount of rain this month as well. It's not all bad though. Great way to see if your shelter is waterproof :)

Well, I finally got out to the woods this weekend. The fuzz and I took a walk out to Paulding Forest-Yorktown area. This is the same area where we ventured in the old goldmine. (go here for the goldmine outing) http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=619787 Juniorspark opted for the pool party at the neighbors. I might join him later cause I'm funky dirty after this project. I also found a little tick on my chest. They're bad out here this year.

OK this is the same shelter in my previous post. I guess it has been here almost a year. I will eventually remove the plastic. I packed in to much gear this time to haul it all out by my self.

I started out with just a basic framework. Most of the logs were quite rotten, but they'd do for this gig. I made sure the beam and column were sturdy enough for the weight of the covering. I dug the column in the ground about 8 inches, and used some bark strips to tie it all together.

Once that was complete, It was time to set up the ribs and coverings.

The bark strips worked really well. I had plenty of paracord, but decided to go completely native with this one. Well, minus the state of the art RC6 of course.

The Fuzz is an old girl at 15. She's seen shelters and tents before, so it wasn't long before she was taking advantage of my offering.

It started to drizzle some about half way through construction. I had to get the tarp ready just in case Ole Ma threw a thunder boomer at me. As it turned out it wasn't necessary.

Normally, I wouldn't build a shelter in such an open area like this. I would like to have a lot more low hanging cover and scrub trees surrounding my shelter. If I was in a wild, unknown area, the dense surrounding cover would provide an early warning of approaching critters or other people. It will also add overhead protection for the shelter. I chose this area today, because it's a beautiful area and I just like the view.

Yep we actually got in there and made sure it fit. If this was the real deal, I'd have a stack of finishing material laying beside the opening. Once inside, I'd close up as much of the opening as possible. There would also be a layer of dried leaves on the floor.

I really had a lot of fun building this shelter. Mostly because of the great scenery and wildlife around. I saw a dozen turkey on the hill behind the shelter, and there were more across the pond. I saw deer sign everywhere and I even got myself a little unnerved when I discovered several large rocks that had been turned over. I've not seen this in a long time, and the last place I saw activity like that, there were bears around. I've seen reports on TV of black bears coming down this far, but I blew it off as an oddity. I didn't see any tracks or scraps, so I could be wrong. Made for an interesting afternoon though. LOL.

The Fuzz approves. I'm out.

Great entry johnspark! And all natural to boot. I was hoping some folks would get out over the long weekend and do some shelter building.

That's great work for an emergency shelter! Nice pack too! ;)
