Another hobby plagued by resellers

Whether you're a bali- flipping enthusiast, or not; this is an amazing video (featuring the Arc Angel), to watch:

The flipper's in this video are amazing, & more than likely part of the reason, why this smooth flipping bali, is so costly!

Patience can be the buyer's friend. The popularity of any knife changes over time and pricing reflects popularity. Knowing 'the market' and waiting until popularity declines will get you a better deal.
So, you don't get the knife you want when you want it. Big deal. There are always more great knives 'out there', most of which are not in high demand.

"Not a good hobby if you don't have deep pockets"?

Wrong. Knife collecting is a rare hobby in that it's great for enthusiasts from every economic level, from kids to yuppies to retirees on fixed incomes.
That's because there is an incredible variety of great knives found at every price level.

The OP simply needs to choose knives that fit his budget. Basic home economics.

I was just about to say this. You can be a knife collector and make minimum wage you just won't ever afford OOP knives that get scalped by resellers.

Everyone's motivation for a collection is different. Some folks have a collection of users. Others treat it like a business and investment. Some people zero in on one particular brand or model. Some people wind up with accidental collections when they sit back and look at what they've gatherer. Other are deliberate. Some do it because of the peacock gene where they have to get the rarest of the rare to post online and bask in admiration.

Just like any collection the price is what the market will bear. Who do you blame, the flippers or the collectors who pay their prices? And what's stopping anyone from being a flipper?

If you want to collect bali's then you've got no problem getting started. If you want rare stuff for bragging rights pull out your wallet or go home.

Bull snot.

Sorry, this woe is me thread is tired. It is officially a whine.

Can't afford nice thing on a minimum wage job? Save longer. Still can't? Get a better job. Can't get a better job and can't figure out how to save money? You don't need expensive collector balisongs. Your priorities are clearly off tilt.

Even if you have the money but can't figure out how to get one in your pocket, so what? Shall we cry you a river? Sorry but if you can't afford said knives, and you can't figure out how to save enough money, and you can't improve your earning power, and even if you could get the money you can't figure out how to get around the evil "flippers", chances are you should not own sharp things.

This is another typical person who wants to buy an instant collection and bask in the MTV glow of "My Sweet Balis".

Just another case of "isn't there anything faster than a microwave".

Also, for some reason I get the feeling Mr. needler420's money, time, and attention span go elsewhere.

I don't know much of anything about the Balisong market but I'm guessing that there must be some Balisongs available that are in between the $20 flea market junk and the high end customs. You could pick up a Benchmade or Bradley for now and start saving for the nice custom you want. Part of the fun of the hobby is trying to track down that rare knife or good deal.

LMAO! I don't quite follow you, Cray...could you please be just a little more specific, regarding your "elsewhere" theory. ;)

Brilliant!

I'm not sure which of your categories I fall into...maybe all of the above.

Of course Cray could have been insinuating something else, but the OP himself lists a few other hobbies:

Which I guess isn't any different then my other hobbies video games, comic books, etc.

Plus I would guess the OP is a younger person, younger than me anyway. Clubs, booze, girls, bands, iPhones, school, and sports are fairly common interests among young people, as I recall anyway. ;)

Someone would be dang boring if buying knives was their only interest. :)

My other hobby is astronomy. I would bet I am a fair bit younger than you. Imagin how popular I am with the ladies! Luckily I am married and my daughter is into knives and stars as well.

@Kelama: he smokes massive amounts of pot. That is why he has no money for he and his ex-girlfriend's high end bali desires. Not to mention the video games and comic books.

Pot is not expensive. Booze costs more per unit time/stoned/drunk. And, at least as many old guys smoke pot as young guys.

I think I broke the system.

To be fair I just got done on a bartending/server in Monterey behind portola hotel so I contributed my share.

My only regrets was not getting a butteryfly or stiletto bartending knife. That way I would have been CA legal and can scare the mean people that don't want to pay their tab or cause problems.

Yeah, that's always brilliant. Give everyone yet another reason to hate knives and the people that enjoy carrying them. All in all, I think we get the point. People seem to buy knives they have zero interest in owning or using and their sole motivation is to gouge and flip them for whatever they can get for them. The solution to this is quite simple. Manufacturers that actually care enough to prevent this kind of thing need to develop a system where collectors can get "one", you sign a contract, if you fail or default you are out of the club permanently. No matter what. Collectors club, Spyderco has been doing this for way over a decade and it seems to work well for them. Just make enough pieces to cover whatever the number of collectors are in the club and a few extra parts for legitimate warranty repair and not the "I didn't think dropping the knife on the freeway would damage it that bad, can I haz anuther?"
