I always wanted a PT for EDC.
I have a thing for 3" folders for EDC and always thought the PT would be the ultimate knife for that.
When i got i loved it. Great ergos, beautiful stonewashed blade and titanium with awesome overall design.
I also have a small Sebenza 21 but the Strider was more expensive!

I heard all the stories before specially the bladeplay factor wich for me is an instant deal breaker.
Still i though, " Screw them, the knife looks amazing, with great materials so i'm going to get one".
I started negotiations with the dealer and he told that it had great lockup so i trusted.
It came rock solid!

I'm not much of a user of my knives, i mainly carry them because i love them so sometimes i need to make something up to have an excuse to use them:)
So, once i was at my girlfriends house near the fireplace so i decided, "let me test this baby out".
I took a chunk of wood and tried to do some push cuts in it.
The cutting ability wasn't great at all and by the time i ended doing just a few push cuts it started developing bladeplay!!!
Well, i don't need to tell you how disappointed i was!
Since then i never carried it anymore.
I thought of sending it to Strider but since hearing all the BS about how they don't return customers email, that they don't like to deal with USPS and other things i thought it was too much of a risk on my end to do so so i, fortunately, sold it!
I added a bit more money and ended up buying a large micarta sebbie wich is a far greater quality knife than Strider!

I know that some of you like your Striders and others will continue to buy them despite all the thousands of negative reviews about them, i understand that, i was one of you, but one thing i can guarantee you:
I WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER BUY A STRIDER AGAIN!!!

To me Striders are not worth the money nor the hype.
People, mostly collectors like me, are always looking for the most expensive, harder to get, exclusive knives but STRIDER IS NOT WORTH IT!
I know the overall look is great, i like it too, but cutting ability is not good and the warranty issues are just crazy.

Sorry for the rant but i needed to get it off my chest:)
So what is a better alternative to the Strider PT? I'll tell you:)

The Spyderco Chaparral!

Since i got the Chaparral i always wondered how similar the knife felt in the hand to the Strider PT.
They both share the same dimensions, same CPM-s30v steel and a finger choil wich is the attribute that makes me think of the PT when i have it in hand.
The Strider is way more pricy and rougher looking than the Chaparral but i can't help but feel that the Chaparral is a distant, better built, better quality and more classier cousin of the PT.

This was just my experience with the PT but from now on i will never recommend Strider again! Probably the chinese fake ones wich i heard are better than the original ones!

My guess would be lateral, I can't imagine radial blade play as the result of making curly ques.

EDIT, I am surprised to hear about radial play, good job getting rid of that lemon.

The buyer seemed not to be bothered by it but i think he'll have to do something to fix it.
Too many lemons don't you think?

lemon? sounds like all striders before the new lock up they are using now. IMHO striders are only good 1 in every 10 times, and i dont like those odds for a 300+ folder.

+1 on that!
It really is amazing how many negative feedback these knives have and how many still buy them!
I know i never will again.
Cool design, i give it that, but too many issues that comes with it.

I'm still going to buy them. More for me!! Seriously, if people half way researched them and understood that you will have to clean off the lock mating surfaces as it breaks in and such there would be a lot less complaints. Josh answers emails everytime I send them, regardless of how stupid it is. They returned my knife in less than a month in absolutely perfect condition also. They didn't call me a liar either...

If this happened to me I would be pissed too. Maybe I've been lucky, but my Striders have been outstanding.
Very surprised that Strider wouldn't make it right.

Isn't this the knife exchange feedback forum?

(You know, the area where you can leave good or bad feedback for other members based on transaction experiences?)

Good thread for General though.

Judging from your first comment, it looks like you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.

Yep. Strider will always make it right. You expect a knife to suck you can usually find a way for it to.

@SSBlood: Striders are huge among military type persona's I think. And when throwing $300 bucks down on a blade, I shouldn't have to 'break it in.' Its not experiencing forces comparable to a gun, which all require some form of break-in period.

Even then, with firearms, straight out of the box, you should be able to empty a magazine with no failures. The same should be true with a knife.

To be fair, I'm not some expert on firearms. These are just my opinions and experience.

You have no idea. You have to break in most knives. A CRK gets smoother with time, as do Spyderco , Strider, etc. Anytime steel meets another material they will mate and smooth out with time.

Unless it's lapped from the factory there will be a break in period.

Just the same, it seems an awful lot like the OP is reporting himself in GB&U, for having gone against his own better judgement by purchasing the knife.
I think that's a first.

I tighten the pivot screw after using first few times. Takes away lateral and often verical play if any develops. Learned that from Peter Carey.
Having to break-in a knife does not make it inferior IMO. Though, it's true that some do come from strider a little rough.

PT is my favorite front pocket carry.

Folders do indeed have to be broken in. I received a pair of Titanium frame locks recently straight from the manufacturer (Protech) and they have not been broken in at all. The locks are solid, but need to wear a bit before they engage more onto the tang. Lockback knives have a very strong spring, and also need to be broken in quite a bit before the smoothing on the lock faces begin to happen, etc.

I had a Stider SNG. Has great ergos, but it had the up and down blade play. As soon as you pushed the frame lock in a little more it would go away. But it was there none the less. Pretty dissapointed for a knife that cost's $400 new. I like my $50 cold steel lawman better. No blade play, and the lock is phenomenal. I also like the heavy duty buck csar with BOS heat treated ATS-34. These both have replaced any need for any more striders. I am sure when they work right they are awesome, but spending $400 on a knife that has lock rock isn't so inspiring.

You posted in the right place.

Sorry you got a bad one. Glad your happy with the Spyderco....they make a really good knife, and the owner(Sal) is a great guy.
