Any recommendations for a good budget combat knife?

I'm interested in purchasing a decent fixed blade combat knife for preferably less than 180 dollars. I don't think I'd be too willing to go over 200, especially since I'd be buying it for no real purpose other than just to have it. Keep in mind I live in Canada, so I can't own daggers or anything like that.

Welcome. Maybe you could provide us with more info to get us started.

What do mean by "combat knife"? You say it wont be used for combat, correct? In has no real purpose.

In that case...just get what you think looks coolest. If we knew what you think looks cool (and we don't) we could probably help.

Well, it won't be used in a real combat scenario, at least I hope not, but I still don't want a cheap phony blade either. I would like something functional. As for what I think looks cool, I like the look of bowie style blades, the Ka-Bar USMC fighting knife, and tanto knives. Other knives are appealing as well, but those are what I like off the top of my head.

No, that's just the type of knife that appeals to me in terms of appearance. I wouldn't be opposed to getting one, as I hear they're solid knives, but I'm just wondering if there is something better in the same price range that anyone recommends.

You can find a genuine Kabar for around $70, within the US. I would like to believe that you could likely et one for just a few bucks more, taking taxes and such into account you might be around $100.

As far as what others like better...
That would be comparable to me asking if you liked one brand of peanut butter over another.

People will have an opinion, but no other answer will Your answer.
You like the knife, give it a go.

It appeals to you, its an excellent knife, and it's in your price range.

Seems like a logical thing to buy.

That said, every manufacturer makes a line of fixed blades...go to their web sites and see what they make.

CRKT 2125KV for combat/utility $70, for a fighting knife get a Hoffner Hand Spear $85, both have decent sheaths but neither are traditional.

Fallkniven F1. It's a "combat" knife in the sense it is military issue. But it's also a very practical and useful blade shape, unlike some other "combat" knives. Under $150 usually.

Hey Isaac! Welcome to BladeForums!

I would suggest, that you contact one of BladeForums most helpful, member's: Stabman

He's a very knowledge, super cool knife aficionado, & he's a fellow Canuck to boot!

As for my recommendation (it may be over your budget & it's been discontinued):

You can find them on occasion, on the secondary markets. Good luck!

OK 1) you can own daggers in Canada; just not "punch daggers".

then 2) where in Canada do you live? Your best bet is to visit a bricks and mortar store or a gun show to see some fixed blade knives. There is a huge choice at that price and seeing them in person will be a major plus.

My bad, I had heard from a few people and read on a few sites that daggers were illegal here. I'll have to look that up later. As for where in Canada, I'm from Ontario.

Look at ontario knife company. They are great values for what they are- tough, tough, tough. Some interesting designs and you could get one way under budget:thumbup:

Just one thought here- I'd like to be sure of what the OP is asking.
People often refer to fighting knives as combat knives. Very different things. Something like the USMC Kabar was designed and used in all sorts of utility roles. In fact, without any numbers at all to support it, I'd be willing to bet that it saw utility use an order of magnitude more than it saw use as a fighter.

Just want to clarify that the OP is looking for a rugged utility knife that could be pressed into service as a fighter even if that's not the primary purpose of the knife. Is that right?

If so, how about something like a Becker BK7? Similar in size to the USMC kabar, but tougher due to full width tang, and with the handle scales, you have options to customize. Comes in well under budget, great all round utility knife, and could do some serious damage in a fight if you know how to use it.

Utility isn't very important to me because I already own the knife you mentioned, which is a BK7. Great knife, like you said. I wouldn't mind some utility, but being designed with combat in mind is really what I'm looking for. I'm not too picky, though. If it is a knife that leans toward combat but can be used for utility, I'm also interested in that.

Glock "field knife"

I think there are a couple of online sellers that allow you to search by price, that might make a search easier.

I'd recommend the OKC (Ontario Knife Company) Spec-Plus series. It's an amazing line of knives, and for your budget, you could two or three models with a different blade configurations, and have fun figuring out what works best for you. Then you've got spares, or extras to trade/sell.

The Cold Steel GI Tanto is another supercheap one. By several and beat the crap out of them.
