Any recommendations for a good budget combat knife?

I'd suggest the KM2000BW - the standard knife issued for German infantry (BW for Bundeswehr).
The newer version is made of Bohler N690 steel - holds better edge than previous one.
Looks amazingly "tactical"and "combat" (if You like tanto blades) and is really multifunctional.
That was my choice and I love it.

Another vote for the SP6

Don't let it's price dissuade you.

Nowadays you'd think because you're paying more you're getting more.

So I'm considering both the Cold Steel GI Tanto and the Ontario SP6 knife. Obviously the SP6 is the better knife in most aspects, but which one would be better as a fighting knife? They both look like they'd do the job, but the differences in blade length and shape is something to consider. Anyone with more experience than me have any idea which one would be better?

email me at "onlyroyce@hotmail.com" and I might be able to help you... plus I'm in Ontario, so it could save you a few bucks.

SP6 hands down.

The GI tanto wont do crap a sharp stick won't do.

People like the GI tanto for it's low price and high level and ease of customizing.

You wouldn't want to do any fighting (srsly?) with a GI Tanto unless you modified the grip material. It's slick and not very comfortable. Cool knife, but not in the same league as the SP6.

A few that I would suggest checking out, which I own myself, are: Buck/TOPS Nighthawk, Gerber LMF2, Gerber Prodigy, Kizlyar Savage, CRKT M60, CRKT Ultima, Ontario SP1, Ontario SP2, KA-BAR Extreme, Boker Plus Armed Forces Tanto.

Thanks for the info. I don't plan on doing any fighting with any knife, but I'd still like one that does the job well if I ever needed it for whatever reason. As for all those knives you listed, which one would you recommend the most?

I'm interested in purchasing a decent fixed blade combat knife for preferably less than 180 dollars. I don't think I'd be too willing to go over 200, especially since I'd be buying it for no real purpose other than just to have it. Keep in mind I live in Canada, so I can't own daggers or anything like that.

Is it going to be a fighting knife or not? It makes it much more difficult to help you when you change what you want to do with the knife mid-thread.

Do you have any knife-specific self defense training? If not, you are kinda in luck, because your decision-maker is the same as earlier in the thread...buy whatever you think is coolest looking.

Its not going to make any difference in the incredibly miniscule chance that you use the knife to defend yourself. Like DPC noted, the GI Tanto, or a Randall No. 1, or a Kabar are all going to be about as effective as a pointed stick.

So get what looks cool. It will make you happy.

You better not look into it too much because you'll either end up buying neither or all of them.

SP6 is one of the best design wise, and so is the Cold Steel OSS.

However if you start looking into other cool brands like Kizlyar and such you'll probably become a knife hoarder like the rest of us.

The Kizlyar Stalker is also excellent btw

I'm not changing my mind about what to do with it. I should have made myself more clear. When I say I won't have it for any real reason except to have it, I mean I'm not at all likely to be in a scenario where I would need to defend myself with a knife. I'm just looking for a fairly decent knife that could stab stuff if I ever needed it to for whatever absurd reason. So in a nutshell, I don't need a combat knife for any specific reason, but I want one that's at least functional.

As for whether I've had knife-specific self defense training, I have had some extremely basic training with a tanto shaped blade. However, when I say basic, I mean basic, so the blade shape isn't really a big factor.

That we can work with. Really you can stab stuff with just about anything...ice picks, screwdrivers, chef's knives, etc etc etc. But you sound like you want some style.

You like "the Ka-Bar USMC fighting knife, and tanto knives," there is a black KaBar tanto...that might float your boat.

This is really why you want to go hands on for the project. You'll quickly see some of these feel like they should be chucked loose in a bin at the hardware store and others carry an aura that will feel just right to you.

That does look very nice. Is there a version of it that doesn't have the serration?

I would seriously consider the OSS, but the Cold Steel website says it's restricted in Canada. I'm not sure if that's outdated information or not.

Well, I consider carry method to be just as important as the blade itself, and the KA-BAR Extreme (D2 steel) is available with a nice Kydex sheath. Most of the others on the list are nylon, some better than others. Actually, sheath design/material is where Ontario comes up a bit short.

If you're partial to the tanto shape, the Prodigy and M60 (discontinued) are available with a tanto blade, the Ultima is sort of a tanto/spear-point hybrid, and the Boker Plus Armed Forces Tanto obviously is by the name. I like the Prodigy based on size and ergonomics, but got my hands on a couple of long-discontinued 7-inch versions of the Ultima that I would probably rank pretty high on my list for fighting use. Certainly not practical for carrying in civilian life, but I think I understand where you're headed with all of this.

Alright, thanks. I'll definitely check those out.
