Any Ti framlock fans interested in the ESEE Folder coming Dec2010??

im going to be waiting for the izula folder

So am i :D

I think I may have waited too long to pull the trigger on this one. Funny because I knew about it back in August. I like the production model more than the le version I'll see if I'm still in the running to get one. The bottle opener looks like it could be used to open or grip other things as well. Nice touch imo

As far as the bottle opener and other "survival" type features on this knife, let's not forget this is a folding version of the original H.E.S.T. so there really shouldn't be any surprises IMHO.

I’d be all over it if it wasn’t for the God awful jimping, blade steel, notch thingy designed to create a stress riser in the blade, the clip and last but not least, the handle shape. Other than those few little nit-picks, looks to be a great knife! :p

These are my thoughts too. Then add in that its made in Italy (though it looks very well made), but thats still a negative for me.

Ahh, but here you shouldn't see this as a negative, sir!

The knife is made by Lion Steel, a manufacturer of impeccable execution. They came to larger attention with their truly awesome SR-1 folder, yet they already made splendid knives such as the Daghetta and the Opera since a number of years.
Italian cutlery is often really good, and Lion Steel is one of the very best.

Great looking but it won't ever have the structural integrity of the true fixed version if you plan on giving it equal abuse.

I would not buy this folder to be used as a fixed blade. At a 3 inch blade this would be a tough EDC for me. So the "bottle opener" cutout would not hinder my use of the blade.

I generally like the design of this knife (minus jimping) but can definitely see where other people are coming from. I might prefer a more ergonomic spyerco-like handle but maybe i should get a spyderco for that. I think for the price range this can be a good knife.

That Izula does look very nice.

The knife comes with a multi-tool that removes the glass breaker and you can replace it with a flat screw. The glass breaker also does duty as the clip screw I believe. The lockbar over extension preventer (Lionsteel Rotoblock) also has a twisting function that prevents the lockbar from disengaging. It basically locks the knife open.

But of course, it's not a fixed blade anyway.

...I didn't even notice that! Yeah, that's just one too many faults for me personally. Just couldn't warm up to it now, I was trying but that's a deal breaker right there. :D

I wonder if the bottle opener is grippy enough to work like a wave?

- The knife is scary fast out of the pocket...and it locks in place. This feature was not hyped but its a deal closer when you hold it in your hand. Very impressive in the real world too since a closed knife in a hostile environment is not that useful ;))

RYP

so in short, yes.

This is really an ESEE/ex-RAT product? What happened to their 'US made only' products? They dropped the RC-5's excellent first sheath when that vendor moved from the USA to an 'off shore' site south of our border. Nothing against Lionsteel - or Italian products - I drove & restore Alfa Romeo's for years. That folder just isn't for me - too many useless features from the DNA sampler jimping to the skull logo. Besides, I already have an assortment of Ti/G10 framelocks, like the BM 755, ZT-301, & Boker Haddock. I also have some real Ti-framelocks - like my BM 630/760/790; Kershaw JYDII (Ti/SG2); and CRK Umnumzaan. No sale here. The CRK 'zaan ended my search for the 'ultimate' Ti framelock... okay, it emptied the coffers!

Stainz

PS Gads - the CRK 'zaan is 'tacticool' - it has the butt end of the blade proud of the handles when secured and shaped into a dull point - a glass breaker! I'll get my magic marker out - a skull for the blade!! I could file a bottle opener in the non-framelock handle, too.

Disclaimer: No CRK product has been altered in anyway... the previous statement was in jest - and poor taste.

I think the whole thing should go into the tacticlol thread.

bottle opener/wave feature
DNA sampler jimping
Glass/skull crusher that does double or triple duty?
hex, glassbreaker and wire stripper
skull logo

It needs the D-2 to be quenched in the tears of many terrorists though to truly make the cut. Those last were quotes of some of the features and are made in jest. I simply think I'm not getting anything eles from ESEE except maybe the Izula folder and then maybe. :)

Honestly the lame bottle opener on the blade was a deal breaker but now that I hear it doubles as a wave I think its a pretty neat design idea overall and worth a second look.

Yeah, I have to admit that lionsteel does appear to do some amazing work. I certainly dont have anything against their quality or Italy itself.

Im just doing this whole "buy American only" thing, and I take more of an issue with outsourcing in general.
Thats not the only thing keeping me from buying this knife though.

I guess I'm weird that I like the bottle opener. The shape looks like it could have other uses in a survival situation AND it can still open my beer over the weekend. Really looking forward to this blade.
